Chapter 318: Recruiting in Person
John looked down at the people kneeling before him, calmly holding his cane. "It's not a holiday or anything, why are you giving me such a big salute? It's making me feel quite embarrassed, and I didn't even prepare any gifts."
Everyone was speechless.
It wasn't that they wanted to kneel; it was because John held the ring symbolizing the leadership of The Shadow of Darkness organization.
Seeing the ring was like seeing Alexander himself.
Even though Alexander was "gone," the ring's significance remained.
Most of these people had fought alongside Alexander, step by step to where they were today. After Alexander "died," they followed Sandra, but Sandra couldn't get things done, so they had to follow Oren.
However, Oren's position was not legitimate, and very few truly obeyed his orders.
John casually stroked the ring on his finger and shouted towards the door, "Sam and Tyler, bring some money here. I want to distribute some cash to them."
Everyone turned their heads in unison, and sure enough, Sam and Tyler walked in carrying a box of money.
Weren't these two just driven away at the village entrance?
"Mr. Lewis, the money is here." Sam opened the box, revealing neatly stacked dollars inside.
John grabbed several bundles of cash, each worth ten thousand dollars.
With a generous flick of his wrist, John tossed the bundles to the people kneeling on the ground.
Everyone instinctively reached out to catch them.
Humans have an innate love for money; this kind of temptation is irresistible.
"No need to fight, there's enough for everyone," John said. "I may not be as wealthy as your Mr. Schneider, who can easily give out hundreds of millions of dollars, but I can still hand out tens of thousands of dollars every now and then."
Sam cooperated with John and chimed in smoothly, "Our Nightfall has recently introduced many new benefits. Anyone who joins Nightfall, no matter your age, can immediately receive an $880,000 cash subsidy."
Tyler continued, "Nightfall also offers marriage and funeral benefits. No matter who in your family passes away, you can apply to our Nightfall finance department for a $500,000 condolence payment."
Sam added, "Anyone who gets married can also apply for a $500,000 honeymoon fund."
Tyler uttered, "Join Nightfall, and you'll get a minimum monthly salary of $50,000, plus extra benefits during holidays and a year-end bonus."
Sam spoke, "Anyone who has been with Nightfall for more than three years will be given a house. Our Mr. Lewis is wealthy and bold enough to make such a commitment. Of course, room and board are basic."
Sam and Tyler, taking turns, turned the scene into a recruitment rally.
And it worked; everyone was genuinely tempted.
Nightfall's strength was no joke.
Setting aside these benefits, just having the Nightfall label on you made you look impressive and dignified wherever you went.
"John, don't push it too far. Everyone, don't be fooled by John. Don't forget why you're here; you are all members of The Shadow of Darkness organization."
Oren's face was livid, almost spitting blood as he watched the scene unfold.
He had brought people to kill John, but now everyone was being swayed. If he didn't speak up, the people he brought would turn against him.
John was going too far, recruiting his people right in front of him. Did he have no shame?
It was only after hearing Oren's words that everyone realized they were here to kill John. How could they shamelessly take his money?
Several people were holding multiple bundles of cash, and no one was willing to give them back.
John tapped his cane on the ground and voiced firmly, "They didn't even finish telling you all the benefits. If you join Nightfall, you'll get basic social security and insurance. If you reach marriage age and can't find a girlfriend or wife, just let me know. I promise you'll all get married. Nightfall will take care of the wedding house and the wedding planning."
As soon as John finished speaking, a tall, thin man raised his hand, "Mr. Lewis, I want to join Nightfall. I want to get married."
John looked at the man who raised his hand and nodded approvingly, "This man is very sensible. What kind of wife do you want? Just tell me, and I'll have someone introduce you tomorrow."
No wonder John was a big businessman; he knew how to grasp the enemy's vulnerabilities.
The tall, thin man spoke shyly, "I want someone with fair skin, tall, with a nice butt and big breasts."
John immediately decided, "No problem. Sam and Tyler, arrange it for this man tomorrow. Find several according to his standards and let him choose."
The man was ecstatic, "I can choose?"
Single for over forty years, the man was thrilled at the thought of finally getting a wife.
Seeing this, others were also swayed by the prospect of getting a wife.
"I want to join."
"Me too."
"I want to get married too."
"I want a pretty one, preferably an eighteen-year-old, the younger, the better."
"Oh, shit" Oren was furious, kicking one person and pulling the tall, thin man up. "You're over forty years old. In a few years, you can retire. Why do you need a wife? Bringing a wife home to suffer, I think you're too idle. Everyone, get up. Whoever catches John for me, I'll reward him with a million dollars."
Someone whispered, "Mr. Lewis has the ring, which symbolizes the leadership of The Shadow of Darkness organization. Mr. Johnson used to say that seeing the ring is like seeing him."
Oren had already noticed the ring in John's hand. It was this ring that had shocked everyone into kneeling.
After Alexander "died," Oren had been searching for this ring but couldn't find it. He didn't expect it to end up in John's hands.
"The ring in his hand must be fake," Oren shouted angrily. "Mr. Johnson is dead. Now, I control the Shadow of Darkness organization. When I tell you to act, you act. Everyone, go."
Everyone stood still, not moving.
Oren was furious, "I see you're all rebelling."
John's face remained calm as he spoke softly, "Oren, a good leader would never stop his subordinates from pursuing a better future. Look at them, all in their thirties and forties. Ordinary people at their age have kids in elementary school. They're all single. This is your failure as a leader. You can't let your selfish desires cut off their future."
These words struck a chord with everyone.
The tall, thin man took a few steps towards John and said to Oren, "Mr. Schneider, you brought us to Silvercrest City to save Ms. Johnson. You like Ms. Johnson yourself, and for your happiness, you dragged so many of us here. Isn't that too selfish? I think Nightfall is more reliable. I used to follow Mr. Johnson. Now that Mr. Johnson is gone, I'll follow whoever has the ring."
John gave Sam a look, and Sam immediately shook the tall, thin man's hand, "Welcome to join us. Please come over here to register."
Tyler immediately prepared paper and pen, "Anyone who wants to sign up, come here to register. Please line up in an orderly manner, no cutting in line."
