Chapter 214 Helen's Last Words
Alexander's cigar hit the floor as he jumped up. He stared at Richard for a bit, then burst out laughing. "Richard, you're as sneaky as ever. How could Aurora be mine and Wendy's kid? I asked Aurora, and she said she's twenty-five and born in December."
"Aurora was born in September. Wendy changed the date to December on purpose. She didn't want you to know Aurora's your daughter." Richard, all worked up, said, "Wendy came to see you back then. Don't tell me you forgot what you did to her."
"Aurora's really my daughter?" Alexander's face went pale, like he'd been struck by lightning. He muttered, "Aurora's my daughter? Why didn't Wendy tell me?"
"You know Wendy. She'd never forgive you for what you did, even if she was dead," Richard said, his voice full of anger. "After she saw you, she got really sick. You know what was injected into her. That drug made her organs fail, and she died because of it. You killed Wendy."
"Drug? What drug?" Alexander was confused at first, but then it hit him. Old memories from decades ago came flooding back. He had caused Wendy's death.
Seeing Alexander's lack of remorse, Richard got even angrier. He grabbed Alexander by the collar. "Stop playing dumb with me."
"Let go of Mr. Johnson." The bodyguards looked ready to pounce.
Alexander raised his hand to stop them. "Stay back."
Richard held on tight. "Take me to Aurora. If anything happens to her, I'll make sure you pay for Wendy."
"The secret room's mechanism changes every twelve hours. Only during the five minutes between changes can it be stopped. Otherwise, there's no way in. Even if you get in, you'll die too."
"Alexander!" Richard punched him. "I've wanted to do that for twenty years."
Surprisingly, Alexander didn't fight back. He seemed to deflate all at once. The news Richard brought had shattered his deepest beliefs.
"I really killed... my and Wendy's daughter." Alexander's eyes filled with tears. "Wendy lied to me for over twenty years, and I've misunderstood her for over twenty years."
At this moment, Alexander felt both love and hate for Wendy. They had both been stubborn for over twenty years, but in the end, he had lost.
"Take me to the secret room." Richard grabbed Alexander. He had to see the secret room with his own eyes; otherwise, he wouldn't believe Alexander's words.
When they got to the room, Sandra saw Alexander and anxiously said, "Dad, think of a way to open the secret room."
Taking a glance at Richard, Alexander pushed aside the antique shelf, revealing a heavy metal door with the most advanced password lock, currently activated.
Richard said, "Open it."
"I can't," Alexander said. "I had a friend from abroad design this. Once the protection system is activated, we have to wait twelve hours."
"What about cutting the power? Turn off the electricity," Richard said, feeling desperate.
"That won't work either. There's a backup generator inside. If the power is cut, it'll kick in immediately."
"Alexander, you!" Richard was so angry he wanted to kill Alexander right then. He laughed bitterly, "You used the world's most advanced protection system to trap your own daughter inside. Alexander, you're really something."
"What daughter? Dad, what are you talking about?" Sandra was confused. "Aurora is your daughter? What a joke."
Alexander sat down in front of the secret room door, his face pale, tears streaming down his face. No one could open the secret room door. All they could do was wait.
After hurting Helen, Jennifer took a red-eye flight back. She was naturally freaking out when she heard John had been captured.
When Jennifer found out John and Aurora were stuck in the secret room, she felt a sharp pain in her chest and passed out. An hour later, she regained consciousness.
Sandra sat in the room, her face blank. Seeing Jennifer awake, she gave a bitter smile. "John's dead. Whether it's you or me, we've both lost. Even in death, Aurora's with John."
Jennifer had always known about Sandra's feelings, so she wasn't shocked when Sandra admitted it. She got out of bed and slapped Sandra. "You helped Dad capture John. Sandra, from now on, you're no longer my sister."
Sandra got all riled up. "I just did what you did back then. What right do you have to hit me? Jennifer, do you think John still likes you? He hasn't liked you for a long time. By the way, during the years John supported me, he visited me abroad every year. And tonight, he promised to marry me."
Jennifer turned to leave. "Don't forget, he gave you all of this because of me," she said as she walked out of the room.
Sandra touched her face and said viciously, "Jennifer, you're a dying person. What right do you have to compete with me?"
Jennifer ignored her and walked straight out.
Silvercrest City.
A night had passed.
Helen was out of danger and in the ICU.
Todd took Sam and Tyler to rescue John. John's capture had also alarmed Summer on the island. Upon hearing the news, Summer immediately ended his training and joined the rescue mission.
At the hospital, Gary was taking care of Helen when Lloyd Lewis showed up early in the morning.
"Dr. Collins, how's Helen?" Lloyd asked anxiously.
"Mr. Lewis, don't worry," Gary reassured him. "She's out of danger. As long as she wakes up, she'll be fine."
If it weren't for Gary personally performing the surgery, Helen might not have made it. The risk and difficulty of the surgery were known only to the doctors who participated. But Gary didn't need to tell Lloyd all that.
Lloyd breathed a sigh of relief. "Who did this?"
Helen had just been beaten by Emily not long ago, and now her brain was injured again. It seemed as if these people were specifically targeting her head, treating it like it was a punching bag.
"We don't know yet." Gary didn't mention John's capture. They also hadn't had time to figure out who attacked Helen.
At that moment, an assistant physician came over. "Dr. Collins, the patient is awake and seems to want to say something."
"Awake?" Gary was surprised. "So soon?"
He had estimated Helen wouldn't wake up until the afternoon. He didn't expect her to wake up so quickly. Saving her life was already a miracle. Her waking up now was an even bigger miracle. But this miracle didn't bring Gary much joy; instead, he felt very worried.
Gary and Lloyd went to the ICU together.
Helen was wearing an oxygen mask, her eyes closed, and her lips slightly moving as if she wanted to speak.
Gary leaned in. "Auntie Helen, it's Gary. Can you hear me? Do you have something to say?"
Helen's lips moved, but her voice was too faint to hear.
At that moment, the heart monitor alarm went off. Helen suddenly reached out and grabbed Gary's hand tightly, gasping for air.
"Auntie Helen." Gary instantly became anxious. He immediately instructed the assistant physician, "Prepare for resuscitation, quickly."
"Helen, Helen, can you hear me?" Lloyd was also anxious.
Yet Helen just clutched Gary's hand tightly. Gary had to lean in closer to hear her faint voice.
"Summer and Loren... they... they are John's sons..."
Before she could finish her sentence, the heart monitor's waves gradually flattened until they became a straight line. Helen's hand slipped from Gary's grasp.
A life had reached its end.
