Chapter 41 Making Things Difficult for Emily
"Can you do it or not? Are we ever going to eat this fish?"
Aurora's voice snapped Emily out of her daydream. She realized it was just her imagination, and the fish was still flopping around in front of her while Aurora lounged on the sofa.
"Ah!"
A series of screams came from the kitchen, sounding likebeingfilled with fear and ending in a hoarse voice.
Emily emerged from the kitchen in a mess, her clothes soaked from splashing water and her hair wet and sticking to her face.
Aurora had a mirror in the living room, and when Emily saw her reflection, she screamed again.
She, the dignified heiress of the White family and the future hostess of the Taylor family, had never been this disheveled.
In contrast, Aurora was leisurely sipping coffee on the sofa, looking completely at ease.
Aurora nonchalantly dug at her ear, finding the noise quite grating.
"I told you, you can't do it. I think you should just leave. Otherwise, I'll get blamed for being harsh, and your family will come after me."
"I'm not leaving." Emily gritted her teeth in anger. She had been humiliated by Aurora and wouldn't leave so easily.
Otherwise, her plans for the banquet would be ruined.
She really was determined.
Emily pushed her wet hair off her face, hiding her malicious thoughts, and smiled. "Aurora, how about I order some takeout for you? I'll get you some Grilled Salmon."
"No." Aurora refused coldly. "I want the fish in the kitchen. What? You can't even show this much sincerity? Then why are you here?"
This was clearly making things difficult.
Emily regretted coming today. She shouldn't have come when Aurora had a live fish in the kitchen.
Forcing a smile, Emily said, "Aurora, I didn't say I wouldn't do it. I just need a break."
"I have to go out later. Mrs. Robinson invited me to go shopping."
Aurora said this on purpose.
As expected, at the mention of Mrs. Robinson, Emily's eyes lit up. "You mean Kevin's wife, Mrs. Ashley Robinson?"
Aurora lazily replied, "Yeah."
Emily was thrilled. "Aurora, can I go with you?"
Ashley was someone many wealthy women wanted to befriend. Emily had heard Daniel's mother, Jane, mention several times that she wanted to invite Ashley to play cards, but Ashley had always refused her.
If Emily could connect with Ashley, Jane would definitely change her opinion of Emily. Pleasing Jane would make Emily's life in the Taylor family easier, and Daniel would praise her, too.
Aurora raised an eyebrow and said, "You can't even handle a fish. What are you going to do?"
"I can do it. I'll go kill the fish right now. It'll be quick." Emily, like an indomitable cockroach, went back into the kitchen.
The fish jumped out of the sink, making it even harder to catch.
Aurora got up and walked over, leaning against the doorframe and directing. "Left, right, it's in the crack. Oh, Emily, you're so clumsy. It's behind you."
Following the directions made Emily dizzy, but she finally caught the fish. As it struggled, its tail slapped her face.
Aurora couldn't help but laugh. Emily sat on the floor, soaked and smelling of fish, while the fish on the ground defiantly flicked its tail at her, making her even angrier.
Catching the fish was hard enough, but the thought of killing it with a knife made Emily feel even more nauseous.
Thinking about how connecting with Ashley would please Jane and Daniel, she endured it.
Aurora casually reminded her, "I have to leave in an hour."
"Almost done." Emily gripped the fish tightly, picked up the knife, and, with her eyes closed, brought it down.
Fish blood splattered all over her, the smell even more unbearable.
Emily was on the verge of tears.
Aurora took in Emily's expression, feeling quite satisfied. "You asked for this yourself. I didn't force you."
"I'm happy to cook for you, sis." Emily forced a smile, but it looked worse than crying.
Aurora didn't have the patience to keep watching Emily's misery. She turned to wash up and change clothes.
Aurora glanced at her phone. The morning was almost over, and there was still no word from John.
Maybe he was busy.
Ashley sent a message saying she would be downstairs in half an hour.
Aurora got ready, and Ashley arrived downstairs.
Emily's fish was also steaming, and she came out of the kitchen smiling. "Aurora, the fish will be ready in ten minutes."
"You eat it yourself. Mrs. Robinson is downstairs." Aurora walked to the entryway to change her shoes.
Seeing that Aurora had no intention of taking her along, Emily panicked. "Aurora, let me go with you. Mrs. Robinson's taste and appreciation levels are definitely different. You don't understand luxury goods. Maybe I can help you."
Aurora looked Emily up and down. "Are you sure you want to go?"
Emily was a mess, reeking of fish and oil. Showing up in front of Ashley like this would be utterly embarrassing.
"I'll wash up quickly." Emily hurriedly said, "Aurora, can you lend me some clothes?"
Aurora's lips curled into a faint smile. "All my clothes are cheap. You're a lady of high status; if you get a skin allergy from wearing them, I'd be in big trouble."
Emily, who always wore luxury brands, had never worn cheap clothes. Normally, she wouldn't be caught dead in Aurora's clothes.
But now, she couldn't afford to be picky.
Emily smiled sweetly. "It's fine. I can wear anything."
"Alright then, I'll find you something." Aurora rummaged through her wardrobe and found the ugliest piece, tossing it to Emily with a smile. "This suits you well. I bought it for twenty-five bucks at a street market."
"Can you even wear a twenty-five-dollar outfit?"
Emily was furious. Was Aurora implying she was only worth cheap clothes?
Emily's eyes were full of disdain. The outfit was hideous; she couldn't understand Aurora's taste.
Of course, this piece was something Aurora had picked out with Donna while shopping.
"Disgusted? Then don't wear it." Aurora said, "Mrs. Robinson is waiting. I don't have time to waste with you."
"No, no, I'll put it on right away." Emily gritted her teeth with disdain but still had to wear it.
She looked in the mirror; it was truly hideous.
Emily's legs looked short and thick, and the outfit highlighted all her flaws.
The two of them went downstairs together. Ashley was waiting in the car. Seeing Aurora come down, she got out with a smile. "Aurora, over here."
"Mrs. Robinson." Aurora walked over.
"Get in the car. We're going for a spa day." Ashley completely ignored Emily.
Ashley didn't have a daughter, which was her regret. After giving birth to Leo, the doctor said her health wasn't suitable for more children, so her wish for a daughter was unfulfilled.
Now that she had an adopted daughter, it somewhat fulfilled Ashley's wish. She liked Aurora more and more.
She had completely forgotten about her son being hospitalized because of Aurora.
Seeing the two of them ignoring her, Emily panicked and stepped forward to make her presence known. "Mrs. Robinson, hello. I'm Emily, the daughter-in-law of the Taylor family. My mother-in-law always thinks of you and said she would invite you to play cards and go shopping sometime."
This introduction made Aurora want to laugh. Was Emily afraid people wouldn't know she married into the Taylor family?
But Emily was too eager and spoke without thinking.
Aurora stayed silent, just watching Emily's performance.
Ashley glanced at Emily, her tone slightly annoyed. "Who is your mother-in-law? Do I know her? Am I close with her?"
Emily's face turned red. Daniel was an illegitimate child, so his motherwas just a mistress of the Taylor family. And she wanted to connect with Ashley?
A mistress trying to befriend the legitimate wife was just a ploy to use Ashley to gain a foothold in the social circle.
Ashley wasn't stupid, and no legitimate wife would want to befriend a mistress, lowering their status.
Emily hadn't realized why Ashley was annoyed and cautiously added, "My mother-in-law is Jane Taylor. Mrs. Robinson, do you remember now?"
"Oh, I remember, a mistress." Ashley's tone was filled with contempt, making Emily even more embarrassed.
"Mrs. Robinson, I..."
Emily's expression turned sour, but before she could finish, Ashley covered her nose. "What's that smell? How many days has it been since you bathed?"
Emily's face turned red instantly. She still smelled of fish, and even though she had sprayed perfume, it only made it worse.
The mix of fishy smell and perfume was unbearable.
Emily took a few steps back, stammering. "Mrs. Robinson, Aurora just... I just passed by a trash can. Maybe I picked up the smell."
Emily wanted to blame Aurora but changed her words at the last moment.
Aurora smiled at Emily, about to speak, when she noticed a familiar car approaching, her brows furrowing.
