Chapter 106 Coax Him

Aurora stared at the guillotine, lips tight. "Mr. Harris, you've got guts but no brains."

"What do you mean?" Chris's face darkened.

"I wasn't threatening you; I was looking out for you," Aurora said, trying to stay calm. "Think about it. The person who called you wants to use your anger against me. If something happens to me, you'll be in big trouble."

"I'm just seeking justice. I lost a leg; you should lose one too. Fair and square."

"Fair? Are you kidding?" Aurora snapped. "You're being played. This isn't fair to you. Idiot."

Chris was livid. "How dare you insult me?"

"Relax, it's just a saying," Aurora smiled. "I'm genuinely concerned for you. If the police catch you, those behind this will be thrilled."

Chris snorted. "I don't care."

"And you don't care about Harris family inheritance eitehr?" Aurora smirked. "You've already lost a leg, which puts you at a disadvantage. If you get caught and your father abandons you, then you're really screwed."

Chris started to think, realizing she might be right.

Aurora felt a glimmer of hope. "Everyone knows about your dad and Nicole. I have a grudge against Nicole. Your dad tried to have me killed to please her, which got you involved. Nicole is the reason you lost your leg, not me."

"Nicole," Chris gritted his teeth. "She dreams of joining the Harris family."

"I'm the only one who genuinely cares for you. We have no past issues or a common enemy. We should be allies."

Aurora continued, "If something happens to me today, you won't escape. Your siblings will be thrilled. The woman who called you might be part of their plan."

"You think my siblings sent her?" Chris's anger grew. "They want to frame me so my father will abandon me, and they can get the inheritance."

"Exactly. If you make a move, they might call the police right after."

Aurora didn't know much about the Harris family feud, but she had to divert Chris's anger.

Chris slapped his wheelchair. "I won't let them win. I'm my father's favorite. The Harris fortune is mine."

"Right, so you can't hurt me," Aurora pressed. "You've suffered a lot since losing your leg. Are you willing to be used again? They might be laughing at you right now."

"Used? Do they think I'm an idiot? Since losing my leg, my father hasn't cared about me like before. My siblings pretend to care, but they're actually happy. They think I'm unaware," Chris's anger deepened. "I lost my leg, not my brain."

Aurora thought his brain was damaged too, but she kept quiet.

"Maybe I can help you regain your father's favor."

Chris was skeptical. "How?"

"What is your father most troubled by right now?"

Chris shook his head. "I don't know."

"Idiot," Aurora rolled her eyes.

Chris was angry. "You're insulting me again."

"I'm teaching you. If you don't want to listen, fine. Just wait for your father to abandon you and live on a monthly allowance."

Chris thought for a moment. "Alright, tell me what to do."

"You can't expect me to help you like this," Aurora said, glancing at the ropes on her hands and feet. "Being tied up puts me in a bad mood, and I can't think straight."

Chris thought momentarily and waved to the bodyguard. "Untie her."

Aurora sighed in relief. Once free, she stretched her limbs. Her whole body ached, but it was bearable.

"My legs are numb; it's cold here, and I'm hungry."

"Enough," Chris squinted. "Don't push it."

"Then you might as well tie me up again. My life might be worthless, but taking you down with me is worth it," Aurora said, sitting back on the ground.

Chris sighed and waved to the bodyguard. "Get a chair, a blanket, and some food."

"Yes, sir," the bodyguard quickly fetched the items.

Chris frowned at Aurora sitting on the ground. "You're a girl; can't you care about your image?"

"I'm not a delicate socialite. Fake modesty won't fill my stomach or save my life."

"Aren't you the daughter of the White Group?"

Aurora pouted. "With a stepmother, I'm lucky to be alive."

Chris felt a bit sympathetic. "You've had it tough."

Aurora was different from other socialites. Facing a guillotine, she could still negotiate calmly. Anyone else would have been in tears.

Chris realized Aurora's earlier words were just to get herself out of trouble, but he couldn't help but admire her composure.

Aurora was surprised, not expecting Chris to have a soft side.

The chair, blanket, and snacks arrived. Aurora wrapped herself in the blanket, sat cross-legged on the chair, and ate.

Chris had a fire pit set up, raising the temperature so Aurora didn't feel cold anymore.

Aurora looked at Chris's empty left pant leg and felt guilty.

"Mr. Harris, I'm really sorry," she said sincerely.

Chris touched his broken leg, eyes dim. "Aurora, don't think a few words will make me forgive you. If you try any tricks, I won't let you go."

"Don't worry, I'm genuinely helping you," Aurora raised her hand. "I don't like your father, but I distinguish between gratitude and grudges. Now that I said I would help you, then I will."

Chris warmed his hands by the fire. "You said my father's biggest headache is what?"

"Nicole and Emily," Aurora said. "If you solve that problem, your father will see you in a new light. The key is to show him you're bouncing back."

Chris glanced at Aurora and then lowered his head in thought.

The fire pit crackled, and both fell silent.

Aurora gave Chris time to think.

Suddenly, the bodyguard rushed in. "Mr. Harris, the Nightfall Syndicate is here."

"Nightfall Syndicate?" Chris was shocked. "Why are they here? I didn't offend them."

Aurora was also surprised. "I've heard they kill ruthlessly. Could someone have paid them to kill us?"

Since seeing Nightfall people at the dock, she hadn't seen them again.

"It must be my siblings," Chris's eyes turned fierce. "Aurora, you were right. They're waiting in the shadows. Now they've even brought in Nightfall."

"Then what are you waiting for? Run!" Aurora jumped off the chair and told the bodyguard, "Take Mr. Harris and go. I'll handle things here."

Chris said, "No, I can't leave this to a woman."

"You being like this is partly my fault. Consider it repaying a favor. After this, we owe each other nothing."
