Chapter 275 Watch the Drama Unfold
Lori felt guilty for the first time. Aurora and John hadn't expected Todd to come back at this time and coincidentally hear what Lori said.
Todd stood at the door for a full three minutes before coming in. He didn't even look at Lori and went straight to Aurora and John.
"Mr. and Mrs. Lewis, congratulations on your two new sons. I brought some gifts for the little ones," Todd said, his tone surprisingly calm as he handed over the presents.
Aurora felt a bit awkward accepting them. "That's very kind of you," she murmured, not quite accustomed to Todd's sudden change in demeanor.
Todd glanced at the two babies and asked, "Have you named them yet?"
"We've given them nicknames," Aurora replied. "This one is Trey, and this one is Jax."
"Nice names, easy to remember," Todd said with a nod. He then turned to John. "Mr. Lewis, I have some matters to attend to, so I'll head back to the Smith family."
John nodded. "Alright, take care."
Todd left without so much as a glance at Lori, treating her as if she were invisible.
Ava nudged Lori. "Looks like the joke went too far this time; he's seriously pissed."
Lori huffed stubbornly. "Why should I care if he's mad? Aurora, we are heading out now. You should get some rest."
After Lori and Ava left, Aurora turned to John. "Do you think Todd will be alright?"
Earlier, when Lori confessed, Todd had been thrilled, but once he found out it was all a bet, he deflated instantly.
John sighed. "Their issues aren't something that can be resolved overnight. They need to sort it out themselves. You should get some sleep, Aurora."
"Okay," Aurora nodded, feeling exhausted and really wanting to get some rest.
The Lewis Group announced its bankruptcy, causing another major reshuffle in the business world.
After visiting Aurora, Kevin immediately returned to stabilize the situation at the Robinson Group, which had also suffered some losses.
The bankruptcy of the Lewis Group was a shocking event. A business giant had fallen overnight.
Of course, some people were secretly pleased. Emily was almost ecstatic when she saw the news. With the fall of the Lewis family, Aurora was no longer the high-and-mighty Mrs. Lewis but a pauper.
Emily thought, 'Aurora can no longer look down on me. I’ve now been acknowledged by Percy and am officially the daughter of the Harris family.'
Holding her daughter, Emily said joyfully, "Finally, it's Aurora's turn to have bad luck. Sweetie, you're Mommy's lucky star."
Chris, passing by Emily's room in his wheelchair, stopped when he heard this.
Emily, seeing Chris at the door, stepped out holding her daughter. She smirked, "Chris, just got back? Did you visit Aurora at the hospital? I heard she had twin boys. Funny how the Lewis Group went bankrupt right after her sons were born. My daughter is much luckier."
Chris, narrowing his eyes at Emily, coldly reminded her, "If it weren't for Aurora's help, you'd still be rotting in prison."
Emily's face darkened as she tightened her grip on her daughter. She snorted, "If it weren't for Aurora, I wouldn't have gone to prison in the first place. Now that she's fallen and has nothing, I'm thrilled." She leaned in closer to Chris, lowering her voice. "Chris, you should be happy too. With John out of the picture, you have a chance."
Chris frowned. "What do you mean?"
Emily smiled knowingly. "Everyone in the Harris family knows about your feelings for Aurora. You took a knife to the back for her; that's true devotion. Aurora is lucky to have you."
She took a step closer, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "Chris, I got out of prison thanks to your help, and I'm grateful. I want to repay you. As long as you don't mind that Aurora has four sons, I can help you marry her."
Emily genuinely hoped Chris would marry Aurora. Once Aurora was in the Harris family, Emily would have plenty of opportunities to settle scores with her.
Before, because of John, she had to swallow her anger, but now things were different. Aurora's support had collapsed.
Chris gave Emily a cold look. "You should have stayed in prison a few more years to reflect."
With that, Chris wheeled himself back to his room.
Emily shouted at his back, "I don't believe you don't want to marry Aurora. A beauty like her is hard to come by."
The door closed fiercely, blocking out Emily's voice.
Chris sat in his wheelchair, silent for a long time, before slowly wheeling himself to the balcony.
His mind was filled with images of Aurora: her calm demeanor when he kidnapped her, her grace in every gesture, and the stunning dance at her birthday party.
Aurora was like a treasure, always full of unexpected surprises.
Chris took out a photo from his pocket, or rather, a clipping from a newspaper. It was a picture of Aurora dancing at her birthday party. Originally a photo with John, Chris had cut out just Aurora.
Staring at the photo, Chris absentmindedly squeezed his broken left leg.
Emily's voice floated over from the adjacent balcony, carrying a hint of smug satisfaction. "Do you know who broke your leg? It was John. He sought revenge on you for Aurora."
Chris's eyes widened in shock. "Say that again."
Emily leaned against the railing, her tone dripping with malice. "Back then, we didn't know Aurora's poor boyfriend was Mr. Lewis. Aurora was indiscreet, knowing about my mom's affair with your dad. To keep her quiet, your dad sent someone to teach her a lesson. Not long after, you were retaliated against, and it was John who did it."
She paused, letting the weight of her words sink in. "Chris, John crippled your leg and took the woman you love. Are you really indifferent?"
The grudge of a broken leg was irreconcilable.
Chris suddenly gripped his broken leg, his eyes burning with hatred. He gritted his teeth, his voice a low, venomous growl. "John."
Chris suddenly remembered the guilt in Aurora's eyes every time she saw his broken leg. So, she had known all along that it was John who crippled him.
Emily's lips curled into a triumphant smile. Now, she just had to sit back and watch the drama unfold.
A storm was coming.
At Stellaris Grand Hotel, Lori, wearing a bathrobe after a shower, was trimming her toenails. Looking at the rain outside, she remarked, "The weather is so unpredictable. There were stars and a moon just now, and now it's raining."
Ava, sipping tea, asked, "How long do you plan to stay in Silvercrest City this time?"
Lori, ever the loyal friend, replied, "Aurora just had twins, and the Lewis family is in a tough spot. I've got nothing else on my plate, so I'll stick around Silvercrest City for a while."
Ava took a sip of her tea and asked casually, "Aren't you going to explain things to Todd?"
Lori shrugged, her tone nonchalant. "What's there to explain? It's been months. It was just a joke. If you hadn't brought it up today, I would've forgotten all about it. He probably didn't take it to heart either. Besides, we're all adults. Can't we take a joke?"
Just then, the doorbell rang. The two exchanged glances. Who could it be so late?
Lori signaled with her eyes and urged, "Ava, go open the door."
Ava put down her teacup and walked over to the door. When she opened it, she was stunned by who she saw.
From inside, Lori called out, "Ava, who is it?"
