Chapter 102 The Price of Vanity

Daniel couldn't take his eyes off Aurora.

'Is she really with John now?' he thought.

From his seat behind them, it sure looked like they were flirting.

"Daniel?" Emily tugged at his hand, whispering, "The bid's at five million. I can't cover it. Can you help me win?"

"Why do have to so vain? You want me to blow fifty million like Mr. Lewis?" Daniel's voice dripped with sarcasm. "It's just a bag. Stop trying to outdo Aurora. You can't beat her."

Just then, Daniel's phone rang. He got up and left, leaving Emily alone.

Emily replayed Daniel's words in her head. Jealousy consumed her.

The auction price climbed to eight million.

A woman next to Emily sneered, "Look, Emily's not bidding. She probably can't afford it."

"Yeah, it's funny. She can't even buy back her own stuff."

"Daniel left. He has been cold to her all night. Their marriage must be on the rocks."

Emily clenched her fist and raised her paddle. "Ten million dollars."

Everyone turned to stare at her.

Emily maintained a forced smile, but it looked more like she was about to cry.

She didn't have ten million. When it came time to pay, she'd be a laughingstock.

Aurora glanced at her, surprised, then looked away.

The auctioneer beamed, "Any bids higher than ten million? Ten million once, twice... sold! Congrats, Mrs. Taylor."

Applause filled the room.

Emily stood, smiling and waving. For a moment, she felt like the cherished daughter of the White Family again.

Sophia asked Aurora, "Can she afford that? She looks more like she's crying than smiling."

"Maybe she can," Aurora shrugged. She had bigger problems. John was boldly rubbing her leg under the table.

Wasn't this blatant flirting?

Aurora glared at John, who just smiled innocently.

She wanted to rip his mask off.

John's leg moved higher.

The tingling made Aurora clamp her legs, her cheeks flushing.

"Aurora, why's your face so red?" Ashley asked, concerned.

"Nothing, just hot from the AC," Aurora forced a laugh, warning John to behave.

If they were home, she'd pin him to the bed. He was too cocky.

John leaned in, whispering, "Come to my place tonight."

Aurora's heart raced. His seductive voice was lethal.

He was still seducing her.

But with so many people around, she whispered back, "Behave, or I won't come over."

"Aurora, inviting me to your place? No problem," John chuckled.

"When did I invite you?" Aurora's eyes widened. This guy was too good at twisting words.

"If you don't come, I'll go. Got any other ideas?" John smirked. "Are you hinting at a proposal?"

"No," Aurora blushed. "Don't get so close."

They chatted like no one else was around, their whispers looking suspiciously intimate.

Aurora tried to pull away, but John shamelessly moved closer.

Everyone was stunned!

It wasn't Aurora leaning in; it was John pursuing her.

John, the head of the Lewis Family, a top business figure, was being gentle and trying to make Aurora happy.

Where was the cold, ruthless head of the Lewis Family?

Tonight, John made it clear he was pursuing Aurora, and she was his woman.

As the charity gala wrapped up, Emily watched John being so sweet to Aurora, even dropping fifty million on bracelets for her. Jealousy burned inside her.

When Daniel returned, the gala was over, and people were leaving.

Someone saw Daniel and laughed. "Mr. Taylor, congrats on marrying such a generous wife. Mrs. Taylor bid ten million for that bag."

"Yes, she made a huge contribution to the kids in the mountains."

When Daniel heard "ten million," his eyes narrowed at Emily.

Feeling guilty, Emily walked over, forcing a smile. "Honey."

"You spent ten million on a worthless bag?" Daniel snapped. "Are you an idiot? That bag's worth two million tops. Can you afford it?"

"Honey, don't be mad. I didn't mean to. Can you help me out this time?" Emily pleaded. "I just wanted to give you a good reputation. We're a couple, and donating ten million to the kids is a blessing for our family."

"If you're so kind-hearted, go save the world," Daniel retorted, shaking her off. "You made this mess, you fix it. Don't come to me."

He stormed off.

At the door, Daniel overheard people talking about Emily.

"Haha, spending ten million on a two-million-dollar bag. What an idiot."

"She thinks she's showing how kind she is. Does she really think people don't know her motive? She's just competing with Aurora."

"She should know better than to compete with Aurora. Ms. White is Mr. Robinson's goddaughter and favored by Mr. Lewis. Mr. Lewis wouldn't mind spending fifty million to make Ms. White happy, let alone five billion."

"Emily is just vain. She was kicked out of the White Family, and the Harris family doesn't acknowledge her. She doesn't have that much money."

"This is the result of seeking fame. I heard it was originally Ms. White who was supposed to marry into the Taylor family, but Emily and her mother switched the bride, and Emily married in."

"Daniel is really unlucky to have married such a fool. Anyone would choose Ms. White."

Hearing this, Daniel got even angrier and walked away.

Meanwhile, Emily, who had won the bid, hadn't paid yet. The staff was already urging her, and she forced a smile. "Wait a moment, I'll make a call and be right there."

Desperate, Emily called Percy, but his phone was off. She tried Dean, but he hung up on her.

Pacing anxiously, the staff asked, "Mrs. Taylor, is the money ready?"

Their tone was contemptuous.

Seeing Aurora coming out, Emily braced herself. "I'll go pay now. It's just ten million. I'm honored to contribute to the kids in the mountains."
