Chapter 239 Going to the Construction Site to Move Bricks

Percy was quiet for a bit before he finally asked, "Really, no chance at all? Mrs. Lewis, you're a mom too. Emily messed up, but she knows it. And the kid's innocent."

Aurora took a sip of water. "Mr. Harris, you probably don't know me well yet. But I agree—the kid's innocent. So, we shouldn't use the kid to pressure others, right?"

She wasn't swayed by his plea. Helen was still out cold, and John hadn't said anything. How could she decide for them to forgive Emily?

Percy stared at Aurora for a while, then suddenly smiled. "I've been in business for years, and I've never met anyone like you, Mrs. Lewis. You're really something."

Aurora just gave a faint smile. "Mr. Harris, you're putting me in a tough spot. I just joined the Lewis family; I can't make decisions for them. Why don't you talk to John, or even Lloyd?"

Percy knew getting Aurora to budge was a long shot.

Sticking around any longer was pointless.

So he said, "Sorry to bother you, ma'am."

"Mr. Harris, take care. I won't see you out."

Considering this guy once wanted her dead, she was being pretty patient.

Summer and Loren were eavesdropping from the sofa. After Percy left, Summer said, "Mom, this guy won't give up easily. He's probably got more tricks up his sleeve."

Loren scoffed, "No worries, we have Dad now."

Aurora smiled. "So young and already knows how to leverage connections."

Loren giggled, "Mom, Dad married you, so he has to back you up. If he can't handle small stuff like this, wouldn't that be embarrassing for us guys?"

"You really know how to make cowardice sound classy." Aurora was genuinely impressed with the kid.

Her two sons, one smooth-talking, one steady, balancing each other out.

Jennifer's death shocked a lot of people. Todd rushed back, and Lucas left his film crew to attend the memorial.

That night.

John came back, and Aurora helped him take off his coat and hang it up. "If you're tired, take a nap."

John looked exhausted. "Aurora, tonight's our wedding night."

John pressed his forehead against Aurora's and held her head, his fingers running through her hair.

Aurora smiled. "As long as we love each other, every night feels like our wedding night."

Hearing this, John chuckled softly.

Tonight wasn't the right time. Jennifer had just passed away, and Aurora wasn't in great health. Naturally, so he wouldn't push it. "I had Sandra take Jennifer's ashes back."

Aurora knew he had forgiven Jennifer. "So... when do you plan to let Alexander out?"

The name hit John like a jolt. It was the last name he wanted to hear right now. "I'm a bit tired. I'll go take a shower."

John let go of Aurora and walked to the bathroom, leaving her puzzled. 'What happened? Why the sudden change?'

Thinking of Jennifer's suicide, Aurora quickly understood. It was normal to feel heavy-hearted, especially after just registering their marriage and then having to deal with Jennifer's suicide.

Aurora didn't think much of it and went to bed to rest.

As soon as she lay down, she fell asleep. In a daze, she felt John getting into bed beside her.

John habitually pulled Aurora into his arms and gently kissed her cheek. "Goodnight, honey."

His warm breath tickled Aurora's ear, making her itch. In her sleep, she instinctively touched her ear and turned over to continue sleeping, like a lazy cat.

Looking at the marriage certificate on the bedside table and then at his wife in his arms, John felt particularly content.

That night, Aurora slept soundly, but John had a nightmare.

He dreamt of his dad's car accident. A truck smashed into his dad's car head-on, sending it flying, rolling over and over, and then bursting into flames.

The sky was lit up with fire, and his dad's screams echoed in the inferno.

"Dad." John jolted awake from the nightmare, his forehead drenched in cold sweat.

It was already dawn.

Aurora, after having a bit of breakfast downstairs, walked in and saw John's face. "Had a nightmare?"

John sat on the bed for a while, trying to shake it off. "Aurora, let's go to the old house later to see Grandpa."

"Sure."

She was now a member of the Lewis family, so it was indeed right to visit the elders.

After washing up, they headed to the Lewis family old house. Lloyd was already waiting in the hall.

Seeing the loving couple, Lloyd's smile was so wide his eyes nearly disappeared, but he still didn't forget to give John some advice. "Now that you're married, you should temper your personality and live well with Aurora. Make a good life together."

John listened attentively. "Yes, Grandpa."

Aurora also smiled and softly called, "Grandpa."

Lloyd was overjoyed. He had waited a long time to hear that "Grandpa."

He took out a pair of bracelets from a delicate box and handed to Aurora. "If John picks on you, come back and tell me. I'll set him straight."

John pretended to be displeased. "Grandpa, I'm the one who's always being picked on."

"Happy wife, happy life." Lloyd said this with a knowing smile, then leaning closer to John, "If you want to have a bed to sleep in every night, listen to me. Don't provoke your wife. This is my experience from decades."

It seemed Lloyd had his own stories too.

John smiled. So the root of fearing one's wife was passed down from Grandpa.

After a while, John and Aurora spent time with Lloyd, chatting and playing chess.

At that moment, a servant came in. "Mr. Lloyd Lewis, Mr. Rex Lewis is back."

Mr. Rex was the second son of the Lewis family.

After he and Wade were kicked out, Aurora hadn't heard any news about them.

Lloyd took a glance at John before saying, "Let him in."

Soon, Rex came in.

The once well-dressed Rex, whose outfits cost at least hundreds of thousands of dollars, now looked so plain.

He wore a black short cotton jacket, jeans, and sneakers. His entire outfit probably didn't cost more than two hundred dollars.

He had a buzz cut, a tanned face, a leaner frame, and had a beard. He looked much older, just an ordinary person, with no trace of his former glory.

Lloyd felt sad seeing his second son in such a state. "What brings you here today?"

Rex placed some nutritional supplements on the table with a smile. "Dad, I heard John got married, so I came to congratulate him." Then he turned to John and Aurora. " I wish you two a long and happy marriage."

John and Aurora didn't respond. Rex continued, "Wade and I are working at a construction site. I just came to congratulate you and will leave soon. There's a lot of work at the site, and we can't keep up."

Aurora was quite surprised. Rex and his son were working at a construction site?

She thought Rex came to make amends and take the opportunity to return, but he was actually going back to work.

Lloyd felt heartbroken hearing this. Aurora took a glance at John.

He was looking at Rex's hands, the skin on which cracked with many small wounds, clearly from hard labor.

He then looked back at Aurora, who was nodding at him.

He said to Rex, "Thank you. By the way, take a message to Wade."

Rex was delighted. "What message?"

"Keep working hard. Success can come from any profession, even working at a construction site."

Rex's joy was short-lived.
