Chapter 336: Playing Dumb is Also a Skill
Todd and Lori were caught.
Meanwhile, John and Aurora, who were at a birthday party, were still unaware.
This birthday party was unlike any other gathering Aurora had attended; it felt more like a massive trading floor than a birthday celebration.
As for what was being traded, it varied from person to person.
There were very few foreign faces at the party, and with Aurora and John being both foreign and exceptionally good-looking, they were the center of attention wherever they went.
John wasn't exactly a new face, but he had never attended such events before. People in the small town hadn't heard about John's marriage, so when he introduced Aurora as his wife, many were surprised.
When Aurora made her entrance, she drew everyone's attention with her perfect face, perfect figure, and cool demeanor. Standing next to John, her presence was equally strong.
As the birthday party's main character, Nick also gave Aurora a different look.
Nick was already in his sixties but was still very robust, with visible muscles, indicating regular exercise.
His eyes were like a leopard's, fixed on Aurora in the banquet hall, refusing to look away.
Nick asked the person next to him, "Who is that beautiful lady? I've never seen her before."
"Father, I heard she is Nightfall Mr. Lewis's wife, named Aurora." The one who answered was Nick's eldest son, Raymond Cooper.
"Mr. Lewis's wife?" Nick was somewhat disappointed upon hearing this.
Nick was well-known in the circle for his love of beauties, and it was rare for him to find one that caught his eye, only to find out she was John's wife.
Raymond, knowing his father well, suggested, "Father, if you like her, I can find a way to get her for you."
"Idiot." Nick suddenly erupted in anger, "Think carefully about where you went wrong. Offending Nightfall would be the end of our family."
Nick was very perceptive about the current situation and made decisions wisely. He had reached his influential position because he knew what could and couldn't be done.
Raymond admitted his mistake, "Father, it was my recklessness."
Nick patted Raymond's shoulder, smoking a cigar, and spoke meaningfully, "Make sure you don't leave any traces when you do things."
Raymond quickly understood, a smile appearing on his face, "I know what to do."
"Good."
Nick was satisfied this time, "The former leader of Wolfpack is here. Go deal with him for me; he's just a washed-up old dog, not worth much effort."
"Understood, Father." After replying, Raymond left.
Nick went downstairs, taking his other sons with him towards John and Aurora.
"Old friend!" Nick exclaimed warmly as he approached and pulled John into a hug.
John also greeted him symbolically, "Mr. Cooper, you look more energetic than ever."
"Old friend, who is this?" Nick looked at Aurora, pretending not to know.
"My wife." John used the local language to communicate with them.
Aurora understood but pretended not to, looking at John for an explanation.
John then introduced Aurora in English, "This is Mr. Cooper, today's main character."
Before coming to the birthday party, John had specifically instructed Aurora to pretend not to understand anything. Sometimes, not understanding could lead to unexpected benefits. Of course, this was also John's way of protecting Aurora.
Today was undoubtedly a trap-filled party, and pretending not to understand could protect Aurora at critical moments.
Aurora knew several languages, and the guests at the party were from all over the world. Some she indeed didn't understand, but most she did.
Today, Aurora needed to present herself as John's pure, gentle, and elegant wife.
After exchanging a glance with Aurora secretly, John spoke to Nick, "It's my wife's first time here, and she doesn't speak any other languages, only her native one. She only knows how to do household chores and doesn't know what I do specifically. Mr. Cooper, please don't let anything slip."
John winked at Nick, hinting for him to cooperate.
Nick was quite surprised that John had married an ordinary person.
Aurora played along, holding John's arm and smiling, asking "silly" questions, "Honey, what are you talking about?"
John, also a great actor, replied, "I was greeting Mr. Cooper."
Aurora smiled and greeted Nick in her native language, "Hello, Mr. Cooper."
Nick understood English.
"Thank you, Mrs. Lewis," Nick replied with a smile. "Old friend, you have a good eye. Finding a wife is not the same as finding a business partner. If I were a few decades younger, I wouldn't have married my first wife back then either."
Nick's first wife had passed away long ago, which was why he dared to say this.
Nick and John exchanged a smile, looking like good friends, but both knew these were just superficial gestures.
Truth and falsehood, reality and illusion, this is what socializing is all about.
Aurora stayed close to John, while Sam and Tyler dispersed to look for Richard.
Nick was very willing to befriend John and establish a good relationship with Nightfall, which would benefit his own family.
This is called mutual benefit.
John subtly asked, "Mr. Cooper, what do you think of Wolfpack?"
"Wolfpack? We've never dealt with them. I heard they've changed leadership, and Richard is missing. Old friend, you've got one less competitor," Nick replied cunningly, puffing on his cigar and chatting casually with John.
John smirked, his fingers idly tapping the wine glass, "I'm surprised Mr. Cooper didn't profit from it."
"Old friend, you've got a real knack for jokes"
"Mr. Cooper, you're the big boss in this town now. I wouldn't dare joke with you. Nightfall's transport lines still rely on you."
Recently, when John was down and out, Nick had tried to take advantage and profit from it.
A few simple words were filled with tension.
Nick's palms were sweating.
John had spread the word, clearly showing his determination to catch Richard. Nick also realized that John probably suspected Richard would come to him.
Nick changed the subject, "Mrs. Lewis must be bored alone. How about I have my granddaughters keep her company? They all speak your language."
Aurora looked at John, seeking his opinion.
John nodded, "Just stay in the hall and don't leave my sight."
Nick joked, "Old friend, you're really clingy with your wife. This is my territory; who would dare cause trouble here? I guarantee they'll bring your wife back safe and sound."
"My wife is someone I went through a lot to marry, so naturally, I have to take good care of her." John gently stroked Aurora's hair, "Go ahead, if you get bored, come find me."
Aurora found it amusing but kept a straight face, getting up to follow Nick's granddaughters.
The banquet hall was large, with guests coming and going.
Nick's granddaughters introduced Aurora to the local customs and then chatted about clothes, bags, and jewelry.
Women everywhere share a common language on this topic.
Aurora found it quite dull, so she excused herself to go to the restroom.
Unfamiliar with the place, Aurora went the wrong way and overheard someone speaking in Portuguese around a corner, "Willie has already caught that woman. And guess what? They also caught Nightfall's second-in-command, Todd."
"What? Willie is crazy; he caught someone from Nightfall?"
Aurora's heart skipped a beat when she heard this.
Was it Lori and Todd who were in trouble?
Aurora was about to listen further when she was discovered.
"Who's hiding there?"
Aurora didn't have time to leave before the two men came over. She decided to walk out openly and asked with a smile in a foreign language, "Excuse me, where is the restroom?"
The two men who had been speaking were Nick's sons, whom Aurora had seen earlier with Nick.
"Mrs. Lewis, what did you hear just now?" One of them asked.
Aurora innocently replied, "I was looking for the restroom and heard voices here, so I figured I'd ask for directions. I didn't expect to run into you. What were you talking about?"
Nick's sons exchanged a glance. They had been speaking the Portuguese, and John had said earlier that his wife didn't understand other languages.
Even if she heard, she wouldn't know what they were saying.
Otherwise, if the news that their people had caught someone from Nightfall got out, the consequences would be unimaginable.
"Mrs. Lewis, we were just chatting. The restroom is behind you, turn left."
"Thank you." Aurora uttered gratefully, smiling, and then walked in the direction they had pointed.
Nick's sons, to test if Aurora understood their earlier conversation, deliberately chatted loudly in Portuguese, "Where did Willie lock them up?"
Aurora heard and understood but didn't dare to look back or show any reaction. She continued walking forward.
She knew they were testing her.
