Chapter 50 The Selected List

Aurora wandered the streets, not knowing where to go.

It was already late at night.

There were hardly any pedestrians on the street.

Aurora was a bit hungry; she barely ate anything at the banquet.

Noticing a barbecue stand by the roadside, Aurora sat down, ordered some barbecue, and called for a bottle of beer.

A cool breeze blew by, and Aurora sniffled. If people knew that the Robinson family's adopted daughter was wandering the streets late at night eating roadside barbecue, they would be shocked.

Aurora didn't want to be confined to the identity of the Robinson family's adopted daughter. She wanted to be her original self.

Aurora ate the barbecue and drank the beer quietly by herself, occasionally watching the passersby.

This kind of leisure was her life.

In a car by the roadside, John stared deeply at Aurora. He had been following her but didn't approach.

After spending so much time together, John thought he understood Aurora. It wasn't until tonight that he realized she had secrets he didn't know about.

At the table next to Aurora, a young couple sat down. They were eating fine at first but suddenly started arguing.

The man angrily kicked a chair and furiously questioned the girl, "You had a child? You slept with another man? Isn't this deceit?"

The girl, heartbroken and aggrieved, sobbed. "I didn't mean to deceive you, Alvin. I'm sorry. I was young and foolish back then, but I truly love you."

"You've had a child, so what do I need you for? I don't want someone else's leftovers. Don't come looking for me again." The man was resolute.

"Alvin..." The girl cried and chased after him.

The brief episode made Aurora even more upset, and a sense of inferiority welled up.

Do all men despise women who have had children?

John would definitely mind, too.

Aurora had deceived John.

After finishing her beer, Aurora stumbled into a cab and went back. Maybe she was tired, maybe she was drunk, so she fell asleep as soon as she hit the bed.

Downstairs, John sat in his car. He didn't get out or go upstairs. He lit a cigarette and smoked silently.

There was nothing he couldn't find out if he wanted to.

But he didn't dare to investigate why Aurora was acting so strange tonight.

The cigarette burned out bit by bit.

The car was filled with smoke, and the ground was littered with cigarette butts.

As dawn broke, John finally left and returned to the Lewis family estate.

Helen had gotten up early. She hadn't visited Aurora for several days and didn't want to show up at yesterday's banquet to avoid suspicion.

As Helen came downstairs, she saw John coming in from outside, walking quickly with his cane.

"John, what's wrong?" Helen's heart skipped a beat. "Did you have a fight with Aurora?"

Helen had said it casually, but the temperature in the air suddenly dropped.

Oh no, it seemed she had guessed right.

Helen cautiously asked, "Did you really have a fight?"

John didn't speak, which made Helen even more anxious.

"John, say something. What happened? Tell me, and I'll help you figure it out."

"Nothing." John dropped the word and headed upstairs.

Helen remembered something and quickly reminded him, "John, Wade Lewis is back."

John stopped, his brow furrowing.

As soon as Helen finished speaking, a tall, handsome man in casual clothes appeared at the top of the stairs.

"John is back. Long time no see."

Wade had a gentle smile on his face, but if you looked closely, there was a hint of malice in it.

This man was Rex's eldest son, Wade.

John stared at Wade in front of him, gripping his cane a bit tighter.

"Why didn't you notify us before you came back?" John smirked. "Are you here to visit Uncle Rex?"

"I heard it was Nightfall's people who made a move this time. My dad took a big hit, so as his son, I have to get back at them for him."

John sneered. "Wade, you're so filial. Be careful not to get yourself caught up in it too."

"Thanks for the concern, John. I'll be cautious. I'll make sure to get back ten times what my dad lost from the Nightfall Syndicate."

Though they were chatting and laughing, the air was thick with tension.

Wade continued, "By the way, John, I brought a renowned doctor from abroad this time to take a good look at your condition."

"No need." John refused with two words and didn't give Wade any face, heading straight to his room.

Wade's expression turned dark, his gaze falling on John's limping leg, his eyes deepening.

John always wore a mask, making it impossible to read his emotions or thoughts.

The door to the room slammed shut, and Wade smiled at Helen. "Aunt Helen, it seems John still holds a grudge over the incident five years ago when I drugged him. I really wanted to help John and Jennifer Johnson back then, but it turned into such a tragedy."

Helen sneered. "Stop pretending to be kind, Wade. You came back early hoping my son would die soon. But rest assured, even if something happens to my son, the Lewis family won't fall into your hands."

Wade's face darkened and asked, "Aunt Helen, what do you mean by that? When have I ever coveted the Lewis family's assets?"

Helen sneered and walked away without saying anything more.

She just wanted to make Wade uncomfortable. As for what she meant, who knows? She was just talking nonsense.

Aurora went to work as usual, and her colleagues were all very attentive to her.

She was not used to it.

People were always driven by profit. The banquet was so grand that no one could be unaware.

Her colleagues' attentiveness was entirely because of her title as the Robinson family's adopted daughter.

"Aurora, Mr. Lucas Lewis wants to see you in his office," a colleague relayed.

"Okay." Aurora tidied up and went to the office.

"Mr. Lucas Lewis."

Aurora knocked and entered. "You wanted to see me."

"Close the door," Lucas said without looking up.

Aurora suspiciously closed the door and asked, "Mr. Lucas Lewis, what do you need?"

Lucas finally looked up at Aurora. "I just wanted to confirm, do you really want to go to the Lewis Group headquarters? If you don't, you'll be promoted to product manager here."

Going to the headquarters might mean being a small employee, while at this subsidiary, she could get a promotion.

Aurora was surprised. Was Lucas trying to keep her here?

Seeing Aurora's silence, Lucas leaned back in his chair and smiled. "You can go back and think about it."

"No need, Mr. Lucas Lewis. If I can get the position, I still hope to go to the headquarters." Aurora spoke frankly. It wasn't that she wasn't afraid of offending Lucas. She wanted to go to a higher platform before, and now, she wanted a change of environment even more.

Lucas frowned, knowing he couldn't keep her but still trying.

"Alright!" Lucas clasped his hands together and suddenly said, "You were great at the banquet last night."

"Mr. Lucas Lewis, you were there?"

She hadn't seen Lucas last night.

"I saw it on the news."

Of course, if Lucas had been there, those socialite ladies would have screamed.

"Thank you." Aurora smiled lightly. "Mr. Lucas Lewis, is there anything else?"

"The review results are out. You can report to the headquarters tomorrow." Lucas looked at Aurora and said, "Congratulations."

Even though Aurora was determined to succeed, she was still surprised.

Shortly after Aurora left the office, the other spot was also announced, and the person selected to go to the headquarters surprised everyone.
