Chapter 301 We're Even

The sky darkened.

At 8 PM, under the Twin Rivers Bridge, John was already there when Chris arrived.

Earlier at the police station entrance, John had hinted to Chris to meet here tonight.

Chris had asked about Aurora's broken leg more than once. Aurora owed a favor to Chris, and this matter had to be resolved.

John stood by the bridge with his hands in his pockets, his gaze deep and somber, as if he were merging with the night.

Chris wheeled himself over, placing his hands on the tires,  and looked at John. Chris asked, "Mr. Lewis, I wonder why you asked me to come here."

This was a rhetorical question.

John, being straightforward, took two steps forward, his gaze falling on Chris's broken leg, and admitted frankly, "It was me who had your leg crippled."

Upon hearing this, Chris trembled all over, a surge of anger and shock overwhelming him.

He was furious that John had crippled his leg, making him disabled, and shocked that John admitted it so openly.

Chris, emotionally charged, said, "John, the grudge of a broken leg is irreconcilable."

"So today, I asked you here to settle this grudge," John said expressionlessly. "Back then, Percy sent people to kidnap Aurora, intending to kill her. To save herself, Aurora jumped into the sea. Fortunately, I arrived in time to save her. I originally wanted to cripple Percy, but you are Percy's most beloved son. Only by harming you could Percy receive a better punishment."

"John, your single thought ruined my life," Chris said, his eyes filled with hatred. "I was once a golden boy, but you made me suffer so much. Do you know what kind of life I lead now in the Harris family? I used to be the most promising candidate to inherit the Harris Group, but now I'm a cripple and I can do nothing."

Chris gripped the wheelchair's armrests tightly, veins bulging on his forehead, his expression pained. "If I were whole, I wouldn't be so timid in front of the one I love and I would have taken Aurora away."

John had long seen through Chris's feelings for Aurora.

"Even if you were whole, you and Aurora wouldn't have a future," John said, pulling a knife from his pocket.

Chris's pupils contracted sharply, a clear trace of fear flashing in his eyes. "What are you trying to do?"

The area was remote, with a rushing river below the bridge. Chris was a cripple, and if John really wanted to do something, it would be easy. Chris's fear was understandable.

The sky changed suddenly, with wind and clouds swirling. It looked like a storm was about to hit.

John handed the knife to Chris, his gaze deep. A flash of lightning lit up the sky, making everything bright for a moment before it became even darker.

Chris didn't understand John's intention and remained on guard.

"From the moment I met Aurora, my life has belonged to her. As long as she's alive, I won't die. The debt she owes, I'll repay." John said in a deep voice. "Now, take the knife. Except for my life, you can do whatever you want. From now on, you can't use this debt to bind Aurora. The grudge between us men, we settle it ourselves."

Chris was deeply shocked. That meant as long as he spared John's life, he could cripple John's limbs if he wanted. Or it was just to cut off his excuse to pester Aurora.

If it weren't for Aurora, John wouldn't have gone to such lengths.

Chris stared at the knife but didn't dare to take it. When he found out it was John who crippled him, he was angry and his first thought was to cripple John in return.

But when John really gave him this chance, he chickened out.

John suddenly raised his voice, "Take it."

Chris trembled and didn't dare to reach out. "John, don't think this will settle everything. After my leg was broken, do you know how much scorn and ridicule I've endured? You can't understand."

As soon as Chris finished speaking, John suddenly raised the knife and, to Chris's shock, stabbed it into his own left leg.

Blood gushed out instantly, soaking his pants.

Meanwhile.

At the Lewis family mansion, Aurora's eyelid kept twitching, making her feel uneasy.

Aurora asked, "Summer, where did your dad go?"

Aurora walked out of the room, the occasional flash of lightning in the sky making her even more anxious.

"Mommy, I saw Daddy go out just now," Summer said. "Daddy's a grown man; don't worry about him."

Trey and Jax were taken to their room by Helen, and Loren was with Lloyd.

Summer suddenly received a message, his expression changing. He said to Aurora, "Mommy, Mr. Collins is looking for me. Randy is here. I need to go out for a bit."

"It's so late. Let Sam take you," Aurora said, worried.

"Okay, Mommy." Summer found Sam, and the two of them left quickly.

Aurora, still uneasy, called John, but no one answered.

Under the Twin Rivers Bridge, Chris snapped out of his shock. "John, what are you doing? This wasn't my doing; you did it yourself."

John's pain was so intense that he could barely stand on one leg, yet he withdrew the knife without any change in expression, gritting his teeth to endure the agony as he said, "We are even now."

Just to be even, John had crippled his own leg.

Chris, shocked, couldn't help but admire John's courage. He dared to act and take responsibility, even being ruthless to himself.

Chris wasn't stupid. He knew John did this for Aurora. From now on, he couldn't use the debt to force Aurora into anything.

Previously, he could still manipulate Aurora, exploiting her guilt to arrange a meal or a conversation. Now, they were merely strangers with no obligations between them.

Chris deflated, feeling defeated. "I lost completely."

If it were him, he didn't know if he could have John's courage. In fact, he didn't even have the right to say he lost.

John, holding the knife, let the blood flow from his leg. "Chris, if you want the position of heir, as long as you fight for it, I'll help you, completely settling this grudge."

John said this and turned to leave.

Chris watched John's straight back, suddenly understanding why John could win Aurora's heart and rise again after bankruptcy. A man so strong and courageous could never lose.

John walked to his car, picked up his phone, and saw the missed call. He adjusted his mood and called back, his tone relaxed as he said with a smile, "Aurora, what's up? Still not asleep?"

"John, where the hell are you? It's about to rain. Hurry back," Aurora said, her tough but soft-hearted nature showing.

Hearing Aurora's voice, John felt the pain in his wound lessen.

John replied, "I have something to do. I won't be back tonight. Go to bed early. I'm going to meet Gary for a drink. He's acting strange today, and I need to check on him."
