Chapter 444 Let Karolyn and Alexander Do a Paternity Test
Karolyn felt a wave of awkwardness. "Mr. Lewis is really good to your wife."
"People respond to genuine kindness," John glanced at Karolyn's belly. "Are you about to give birth?"
"No, I'm just feeling unwell and came to the hospital to ensure the baby's safety," Karolyn replied with a bitter smile. "It's tough being pregnant, always worrying."
"Where's your husband?"
"We got divorced." Karolyn lowered her eyes, looking sad. "I wasn't as lucky as Aurora to find such a good husband. Mine cheated on me."
John nodded. "That's really unfortunate."
Karolyn fell silent. That wasn't exactly what she meant.
Suddenly, Karolyn's expression turned painful.
"My stomach hurts," she said as she clutched her belly with one hand and reached out to grab John, trying to fall into his arms.
John stepped back. A passing nurse quickly supported Karolyn. "What's wrong? Where does it hurt? I'll take you back to your room."
Karolyn was annoyed by the nurse's interference, but had to endure it and continued her act. "My stomach hurts."
John spoke up, "Miss, please take this lady back to her room. I'll go get a doctor."
Hearing that John didn't plan to stay, Karolyn acted even more "weak," leaning heavily on the nurse.
The nurse took Karolyn back to her room, and John brought a doctor who performed an EKG, checked her blood pressure, and listened to the baby's heartbeat. Everything was normal.
The doctor advised, "Rest in bed more and avoid walking around."
The doctor then instructed the nurse, "Keep monitoring the baby's heartbeat and blood pressure."
John stood with his arms crossed, leaning against the wall, watching everything with a blank expression.
After the doctor and nurse left, Karolyn said, "Thank you, Mr. Lewis. I'm feeling much better now. Maybe the baby kicked hard, causing the pain."
John didn't respond, standing up straight and suddenly walking towards Karolyn, slowly leaning in with one hand on the bed's headboard.
Karolyn's heart raced, her face turning red with a shy, girlish blush.
Just as Karolyn thought John might do something, he said, "There's a bug on your shoulder."
John brushed the bug off Karolyn's shoulder, discreetly taking a strand of her hair that had fallen on her clothes.
Karolyn, startled by the bug, didn't notice John's subtle action.
John stepped back, keeping his distance. "The bug is gone, Ms. Harrington. The doctor advised you to rest, so I won't disturb you further."
Hearing that John was about to leave, Karolyn panicked. "Mr. Lewis, I'm a bit hungry. Could you get me something to eat?"
This request was abrupt, but Karolyn didn't know how else to keep John around.
The more Karolyn acted this way, the more suspicious John became.
"I'll ask the nurse to get you something. What else would you like? I can order takeout for you."
"Anything is fine."
"Alright, I'll order you some beef stew with rice. My wife loves it. And some pig's feet soup, which she also loves. She always says women should eat pig's feet to replenish collagen."
John kept mentioning "my wife," making Karolyn's expression almost unbearable.
John ordered the food and left, leaving Karolyn with no reason to keep him.
As John exited the hospital, Sam emerged from the shadows. "Mr. Lewis, how did it go?"
"Go to the White Villa and find a way to get a few strands of my father-in-law's hair without raising any suspicion. Then take the hair and do a paternity test."
Sam, having worked with John for years, quickly grasped his intention.
"Mr. Lewis, are you saying Karolyn might be Alexander's illegitimate daughter?" Sam asked, incredulous.
John remained silent.
"Just get it done quickly. I'll go find Allan."
With that, John drove off.
Sam thought it over, becoming even more shocked.
Could Karolyn be Sandra?
Sandra didn't die after all?
She survived against all odds.
Sam carefully stored the hair and hurried to the White Villa.
As Sam left, a man wearing a baseball cap emerged from the shadows, watching Sam's departure with a deep gaze.
...
Allan was on duty today, also reviewing Sandra's case. He was about to check the archives when a colleague entered. "Mr. Jennings, Mr. Lewis is here to see you."
It was late, and John had come to the station specifically to see him. Allan didn't delay and went out immediately.
John was sitting in the lobby and got straight to the point. "Sandra has resurfaced."
"Where?"
"She's using someone else's identity, probably with a new face after plastic surgery," John said. "If I'm right, the fire was a carefully planned escape for Sandra. I'm having a final paternity test done. Once the results are out, you'll need to act."
Allan admired Sandra's cunning. "She's really smart. I'll have my team keep an eye on her. Once you have the results, we'll move in."
After discussing Sandra, Allan asked, "How's Todd doing?"
"His mental age is less than three. He eats and sleeps all day, with Lori keeping him company. He seems fine."
"Is there no cure?"
"Not necessarily."
"That's good. It's like reliving childhood. I'll visit him once I'm less busy," Allan said. "It shouldn't be too serious. I just saw my aunt and uncle showing off their love on Twitter."
Allan was distantly related to the Smith family, not directly his aunt and uncle, but by seniority, they were considered as such.
John admired them. "They really have a positive outlook."
Allan agreed. "My aunt and uncle's resilience is truly remarkable."
The White Villa.
Jack had been unconscious for hours and was finally waking up. Aurora brought some light porridge and side dishes.
"Jack, have something to eat."
Jack was no longer restrained. Alexander, following John's instructions, always accompanied Aurora when she visited Jack.
Jack rubbed his temples. "Aurora, I'm not hungry. I want to go for a walk."
Before Aurora could respond, Alexander refused. "No, you're a dangerous person right now. You can't go out."
Jack glanced at Alexander and said to Aurora, "Aurora, they say I have issues, but I really don't."
"Your tone suggests your emotions have stabilized," Aurora said, pulling up a chair and sitting down with a serious expression. "Tell me, what did you inject into Lori's body?"
