Chapter 240 John Deserved the Best Actor Oscar
Rex shed his restlessness and became much more composed compared to before. Even when John tried to rile him up, he kept his cool.
"I'll let Wade know what you said," Rex replied, a bit emotional. "Wade and I have had it easy for so long. It's good to face some tough times, see people for who they really are, and toughen up. I know Wade will find his own way."
Rex turned to Lloyd. "Dad, Wade and I get where you're coming from. Take care of yourself. I'm heading back to the construction site."
Rex had learned a lot from everything he'd been through.
Lloyd felt proud. He thought about having the driver take Rex, but John subtly shook his head.
It's easy to get used to luxury, but hard to go back to simplicity.
Rex had just started to change, so they couldn't let their efforts go to waste.
Lloyd decided to let it be.
After Rex left, John stood up too. "Grandpa, I'm taking Aurora to visit my dad's grave."
"You should go see him," Lloyd nodded. "You two just got married, so it's good to let him know."
Aurora glanced at John. It was the first time she'd heard him mention his father.
John walked over to Aurora and naturally took her hand as they left.
As they drove away from the Lewis family mansion, Aurora noticed Rex waiting at a bus stop. "Rex has really changed. Not everyone could handle this."
"Do you know why the Lewis family is where it is today?" John asked. "It's because we endure what others can't. Wade put up with a lot to gain power. Moving bricks on a construction site is nothing; he can handle it."
Aurora was curious. "So when will you let them come back?"
Though John seemed cold, he had a warm heart. Those two were family, and with Lloyd around, John couldn't be too harsh.
John smiled. "When the houses on the Westvale land are built, they can come back."
"Is that the orphanage where Summer and Loren used to stay—the one that got torn down for the new houses? Are they working on that site? Did you set this up?"
If she remembered correctly, Wade had originally proposed that project.
"It wasn't my doing. They probably went there out of desperation," John said with a slight smile. "I just made sure no one else would hire him. With Wade's stubbornness, he wouldn't leave this City."
"You're really sneaky," Aurora teased. "Even someone as sharp as Wade ended up moving bricks because of you. Now I'm starting to wonder if there was something fishy about our marriage registration. Come on, spill it, did you trick me too?"
John drove with one hand and used the other to hold Aurora's, their fingers intertwined. "Aurora, I have a secret to tell you."
"What secret?"
John looked serious, making Aurora a bit nervous but also excited.
As the light turned red, John stopped the car and looked at Aurora intently. "Actually, I've lived for hundreds of years. We've known each other for several lifetimes. I've been scheming to make you my wife since my great-great-great-grandfather's time. Every time you reincarnate, I find you and trick you into marrying me."
"Really?" Though Aurora knew John was joking, she played along, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Honey, how long can you live?"
Their fingers tightened, and John said with a smile. "That depends on how many lifetimes you keep coming back."
"Wow, honey, you're such a romantic," Aurora teased, batting her eyelashes. She raised her hand and joked, "Did you bring back any treasures from those hundreds of years? Even an old plate would be an antique now. If not, a spoon would do."
John thought for a moment before grinning. "Aurora, aren't I the most valuable artifact?"
Aurora paused, then burst out laughing and gave John a playful kiss on the cheek. "Too bad the Oscars didn't give you a Best Actor award."
"I prefer the award you gave me."
"What award did I give you?"
John pointed to the spot on his cheek where she had kissed him. "The Goddess's Kiss."
"You really know how to sweet-talk."
Aurora laughed all the way to the cemetery, feeling particularly cheerful. They chatted and joked until they arrived.
After getting out of the car, John held Aurora's hand as they walked to Matthew Lewis's grave.
It was well-kept. John gently placed flowers in front of his headstone.
Aurora looked at the picture of him on the tombstone. He looked quite young, probably not even forty.
John stood silently in front of the grave, his expression solemn.
It was Aurora's first time meeting Matthew. Standing in front of the grave, she was very serious and respectful. Shesaid, "Dad, I'm Aurora. Nice to meet you."
Watching Aurora stand in front of the grave, John had a complex expression and couldn't help but recall last night's nightmare.
Since he had married Aurora, no matter the consequences, he wouldn't change his decision.
After her speech, Aurora remained silent at the grave. On the way back, she asked, "John, how did Dad die?"
"Car accident."
With that, John didn't say much more.
Mentioning his father made Aurora think of Alexander, which put her in quite a dilemma. Should she acknowledge him or not? If she didn't, she wouldn't be honoring her mother's wishes.
As she was thinking, John's phone rang. He answered it on speaker.
The call was from Sam. "Mr. Lewis, Alexander is out."
Upon hearing this, John immediately pulled over and turned off the speaker.
Jennifer's suicide had also greatly affected Alexander. Given Alexander's connections, it was easy for him to get out.
Aurora felt a bit conflicted hearing this, while John's reaction made her even more uneasy.
After ending the call, John took Aurora back to the Meadowbrook villa and then left.
Aurora was feeling restless, and just then, a delivery arrived, specifically for her to sign.
Aurora was puzzled. She hadn't ordered anything and thought it might be from a friend, so she went out.
A delivery truck was parked at the villa entrance, and a man in a baseball cap was bent over while sorting through the packages.
Aurora walked over and asked, "Hi, do you have something for me?"
The man paused for a moment, then asked, "What's your name? I'll find it."
Aurora frowned, trying to see the man's face. "Didn't you just call me to come and get it?"
The man remained bent over, his head down, so Aurora couldn't see his face.
"Yes, I called. You're Aurora, right? I found your package."
The man held a package and, as he turned and lifted his head, Aurora saw his face clearly and immediately ran away in terror.
