Chapter 349: So Close
Paul returned to his office desk froom the cafeteria. He took out his phone and started browsing the news from the past few days.
The Lewis family losing their child had become a trending topic, and the reward amount had increased from ten million dollars to fifty million dollars.
Fifty million dollars—an amount many people could never earn in a lifetime.
The amount was so high, it showed how desperate the Lewis family was.
"Paul." A clear female voice called out, bringing Paul back to reality. He looked up to see a woman walking towards him.
It was Sophia.
The Garcia family had business with AJ Group, and Sophia had come along with her father.
After the business was done, Sophia planned to visit Aurora at The Lewis Villa. She ran into Paul at the company and greeted him out of courtesy.
Paul didn't recognize Sophia. He put down his phone and asked, puzzled, "Who are you?"
Sophia wasn't wearing a work badge and didn't look like an employee of the company.
"I'm Sophia, Aurora's good friend. I know you were Aurora's classmate in college," Sophia spoke with a smile. "I saw you on the day of your interview. It's impressive that you got the job and have stuck around."
Hearing that she was Aurora's good friend, a trace of disgust flashed deep in Paul's eyes, but he maintained a warm smile and replied, "I think I remember you."
Sophia uttered, "I'm going to visit Aurora later. Her youngest son is missing; you should know about it."
"Yes, everyone in the company is talking about it," Paul replied. "It's heartbreaking."
"Yes, a child not even three months old has been missing for so many days. Aurora is beside herself with worry."
"Ms. Garcia," Isla walked over, "Mr. Garcia is waiting for you at the entrance downstairs."
"Okay." Sophia turned to Paul, "See you later."
Sophia hurried off to The Lewis Villa.
Paul asked Linda, "Who is Ms. Garcia in relation to the president of the Garcia Group?"
Paul knew about the collaboration between the Garcia Group and AJ Group.
Isla was puzzled, "Ms. Garcia is the president's daughter, Paul. You didn't know?"
Earlier, Sophia had mentioned that Paul and Aurora were classmates, and they seemed to be chatting well. Isla was quite surprised that Paul didn't recognize Sophia.
Upon hearing that Sophia was the daughter of the Garcia Group's president, Paul's expression changed slightly, and a faint smile appeared on his lips.
He hadn't expected her to be a rich girl.
Paul shook his head honestly. Although Isla was surprised, she didn't say much and advised Paul to perform well and strive to become a permanent employee soon.
After Isla left, Paul's phone rang. He glanced around cautiously to make sure no one was around before lowering his voice and saying, "What's up?"
A baby's cry came from the other end of the line, followed by a woman's anxious voice, "Paul, this child seems to have a fever and won't stop crying. If this continues, something bad will happen."
"Just buy some fever medicine," Paul replied. He wanted to say more but saw a colleague approaching, so he raised his voice deliberately, "Sis, I've already bought the baby formula and sent it over. Make sure to receive it. I'm busy now; we'll talk later."
In the Lewis Villa, Aurora was in her room, feeling dazed. Sometimes she sat on the bay window, lost in thought, and sometimes she paced back and forth in the room.
There was an unspoken bond between mother and child, and she was convinced that Jax was still alive.
But where was he? Who was most likely to have taken the kid?
"Mommy," Summer pushed the door open and came in, "Trey has a fever, it's 102.2 degrees Fahrenheit."
Hearing that Trey had a fever, Aurora was frantic and rushed to the nursery.
Trey was uncomfortable with the fever and kept crying. He had cried so much in the past few days that his voice was hoarse.
Aurora's heart ached. She took the child from the nanny's arms and urgently ordered, "Get the car ready and take the child to the hospital."
"OK, Mrs. Lewis, I'll go right away."
Lloyd and Helen were also alarmed. Because of Trey's sudden high fever, The Lewis Villa was in chaos again.
John wasn't home, and Aurora didn't have time to notify him. She took her son to the hospital herself.
Lori happened to come back from outside and went along with them.
With Jax missing and Trey having a high fever, Helen was a wreck. Blisters had formed on her lips, her voice was hoarse, and her eyes were swollen from crying.
"It's all my fault." Helen sobbed, pounding her chest in anguish.
Lloyd, equally distressed, tried to soothe her, "Helen, calm down. The kid will be fine."
.
In Evergreen Hospital, Aurora took Trey to see the doctor and get an IV to reduce the fever.
The child was too young to speak and could only express discomfort by crying.
Aurora held Trey while he received the IV, humming a lullaby to soothe him, "Be good, baby..."
Lori was busy running around, paying the bills. When she came back and saw Aurora soothing the child, she felt that being a mother was really not easy.
"Aurora, don't worry. The doctor said the fever will go down," Lori reassured her. "Do you want to tell John?"
"Not for now. I don't want to distract him. He needs to focus on finding Jax." Aurora replied.
As Aurora soothed him, Trey gradually stopped crying and slowly fell asleep in her arms.
Aurora hadn't eaten much in the past few days. Suddenly, her vision blurred, and she staggered. Lori caught her just in time, "Aurora, are you okay? Sit down."
Lori helped Aurora sit down and placed the sleeping Trey on the bed.
Aurora took a moment to recover and shook her head, "I'm fine."
"Aurora, finding the child is important, but you also need to take care of yourself."
Aurora had become much more haggard in the past few days, and it was obvious to anyone who looked at her.
"Lori, do you have any news about Sandra?"
"No," Lori said. "John couldn't find her either. I asked Mr. Jennings to question Richard, but he didn't know anything."
Aurora knew John had interrogated many people, but there was still no news. The person who took Jax hadn't made any moves, and the police were also at a loss.
Aurora muttered to herself, 'How could there be such a perfect crime? The police have so many people on this, and John is doing his best. How could there be no clues? It doesn't make sense.'
"Aurora, stop thinking about it for now. Do you want to rest for a while?" Lori was worried that Aurora would collapse if she kept pushing herself.
"I'm fine." Aurora glanced at Trey. She knew she was reaching her limit and spoke, "Keep an eye on him. I'm going to the bathroom."
Aurora got up and went to the bathroom, splashing cold water on her face to try to wake herself up.
After a while, Aurora walked out of the bathroom.
In the hallway, a woman holding a child was anxiously talking to a nurse, "The child has a fever of 102.2 degrees Fahrenheit. Please, you need to bring it down quickly. If it keeps going like this, it could cause brain damage."
The nurse took the child's temperature. It was very high, and the child was too tired to cry anymore.
The nurse asked, "How old is the child?"
The woman hesitated, "Almost three months."
"Follow me," the nurse led the woman to the doctor.
Aurora happened to see this scene. Most mothers could clearly remember how old their child was, down to the exact number of days. It was rare to hear such a vague answer.
