Chapter 94 Flattery
Just when they had a lead, it slipped away again.
Aurora slumped back in the car, devastated. Sophia sat beside her, unsure how to console her.
"Aurora, maybe it's fate. Don't lose hope. As long as they're out there, you'll find them."
Aurora sighed deeply, feeling a strange mix of disappointment and relief.
Maybe it was fate.
Just then, Aurora's phone rang. It was Linda calling. "Aurora, why aren't you at work yet? The meeting starts in half an hour, and everyone’s waiting for the materials you have."
Aurora suddenly remembered and apologized, "Ms. Simmons, I'll be right there. I'm really sorry."
After hanging up, Aurora knew she had to put the search on hold. She turned to Sophia, "Sophia, take me to the Lewis Group headquarters."
How could she have forgotten something so important?
"Okay," Sophia replied, having overheard the call. "It'll take at most half an hour to get there. You won't be late."
Sophia had top-notch driving skills.
Back in work mode, Aurora became a different person.
When she arrived at the company, she rushed to catch the elevator and bumped into Todd coming out of the executive elevator.
"Ms. White, why the rush?" Todd asked, curious.
"The meeting starts in three minutes, and the materials are still on my computer," Aurora said, panting from her run.
Todd chuckled, "The meeting's been delayed by twenty minutes. No need to rush. Take this elevator; it’s direct."
Aurora had used the executive elevator once before and didn't mind taking it again.
"Thank you, Mr. Smith."
Even with the delay, Aurora was still in a hurry to prepare.
As she took the elevator up, Todd called John. "I just ran into Ms. White. She was rushing for the meeting. I told her it was delayed by twenty minutes."
In the executive office.
After hanging up, John told his secretary, "Elena, notify everyone the meeting is delayed by twenty minutes."
"Yes, Mr. Lewis." Elena immediately went to inform everyone.
Aurora hurried to her desk, took a sip of water to catch her breath, turned on her computer, and quickly organized her materials.
Linda came over and said, "Aurora, take it easy. The meeting's been delayed to 10:30."
"Okay, got it." Aurora smiled apologetically, "Ms. Simmons, I'm sorry for the trouble."
"It's fine. Next time, if you have something urgent, let me know in advance or send me the materials ahead of time."
"Sure," Aurora replied.
After organizing her materials, Aurora followed Linda into the conference room. The company's senior executives were arriving one by one.
Wade and Rex also arrived, followed closely by Lucas.
It seemed like today's meeting was a big deal.
Aurora sat in the back row, trying to stay low-key, but she could still feel someone's gaze on her, making her uneasy.
It was Wade.
Aurora met Wade's gaze directly, unflinching. Wade smiled slightly and nodded as if they were close.
Aurora looked away, her expression indifferent.
Sitting on the left, Lucas glanced at Aurora and then at Wade, his eyes narrowing slightly.
Almost everyone had arrived except for the seat at the head of the table, which was still empty.
John hadn't arrived yet.
At that moment, the conference room door opened again.
Elena pushed John in, and the atmosphere instantly grew tense.
A heavy, invisible pressure filled the room.
John's sharp gaze swept over everyone, and he said coldly, "Let's begin."
With John's command, the head of the sales department immediately took the stage to report on the Golden Bay project.
"The first phase of the Golden Bay project has ended. Next, we will start the second phase..."
As Aurora listened, she got a little lost in thought. Despite the air conditioning not being too low, she felt cold, and her limbs were weak.
Aurora clenched her fists, trying to resist the discomfort in her body.
"Aurora, you'll be the one to do the presentation for our group."
"Okay." Aurora steadied herself and walked up to the stage.
Standing under the projector, Aurora glanced at John across the conference table.
Due to the lighting, Aurora couldn't clearly see if John's eyes behind the mask were also fixed on her.
Aurora took a deep breath, quickly got into position, and began her presentation.
On stage, Aurora exuded confidence and poise, with a charm that made it hard for people to look away.
John crossed his hands, his thumbs gently rubbing back and forth, his gaze fixed on Aurora, never shifting.
Under the mask, his face split into a faint smile.
Aurora switched between several languages effortlessly, her clear voice very pleasant to listen to.
Lucas looked at Aurora on stage, his eyes showing sadness. She was the brightest star in the sky, but he was not her sky.
Wade and Rex exchanged a few glances. When Aurora finished her presentation, Wade applauded and cheered, "Ms. White did an excellent job."
Following this, others exchanged looks and then also applauded, nodding and praising, "Well done."
Wade was deliberately praising Aurora, making others think she was his person.
Aurora glanced at Wade, then smiled politely at everyone, bowed, and stepped down.
John's narrow eyes squinted deeply, and Wade spoke again, "John, the Golden Bay project has no issues. With you leading, everyone is relieved."
John smiled, with a hint of coldness, "Vice President Lewis, how is the Westvale project progressing?"
Wade replied, "The construction team is demolishing. Once the orphanage is demolished, we can start immediately."
Aurora felt uneasy. The Angel Baby Orphanage was Wade's project?
Lucas, at John's signal, spoke, "Wade, you are indeed efficient. I heard there are many seriously ill children in the orphanage. How did you arrange for them?"
"Take it easy, Lucas. Every child has been properly arranged. The sick children have been sent to the hospital for treatment." Wade smiled at John, "John, I think we should cover the treatment costs for these children."
This was spending the company's fund to make Wade do a good deed. The fund was from the company, but the credit went to Wade.
What a clever plan.
John said calmly, "Vice President Lewis's willingness to spend money to help those children is truly touching."
Lucas smiled and echoed, "I heard Wade has done a lot of good deeds over the years. Helping the children is something Wade would certainly do without hesitation. On behalf of the children at the orphanage, thanks for Wade."
Wade felt a bit awkward being cornered by the two of them.
Aurora felt her body alternating between hot and cold, very uncomfortable. She whispered to Linda and left through the back door.
Aurora went straight to the restroom. As soon as her hand touched the water, it hurt.
Her head also started to ache.
"Not feeling well?"
A mellow voice suddenly came from behind.
Aurora was surprised to see John. "Aren't you in a meeting? This is the ladies' room."
"I paused the meeting." John touched Aurora's forehead, his expression becoming serious, "You have a fever."
When Aurora left earlier, John noticed immediately and paused the meeting.
"Maybe it's because I got caught in the rain last night." Aurora's head was indeed spinning.
Whenever she had a fever, her whole body would ache.
"I'll take you to rest."
John picked her up and was about to leave when footsteps approached.
Aurora panicked. She wasn't worried about being seen with John in the restroom but about John's fake identity being exposed.
Aurora pointed to a stall and whispered, "Hide in there."
Aurora intended for John to hide alone, but unexpectedly, John carried her into the stall and sat on the toilet.
John holding her while sitting on the toilet?
This scene was something Aurora never dared to imagine before.
With both of them squeezed in, Aurora felt the stall was very small. She had no place to stand even if she wanted to get down.
Aurora shivered from the cold, but John's arms were warm, making her momentarily sink into it.
At that moment, voices came from outside the stall.
"Do you think Vice President Lewis likes Aurora?"
