Chapter 397 You Are Really Capable

Aurora noticed John's expression change and immediately felt a wave of anxiety.

"What's wrong?"

"There's movement," John muttered, staring at the computer screen. "Why didn't the alarm go off?"

The island was surrounded by an alarm system that would activate if anyone intruded or if there was any unusual activity.

Aurora leaned in to look. The surveillance footage was dimly lit, only showing vague outlines.

There seemed to be something in the water.

The couple watched intently. Just as John was about to signal the island's guards, Aurora quickly said, "Wait, it's a Kelpie."

John looked closer. On the screen, a long-haired woman was crawling out of the water, her hair covering her face, her slender hands dragging her forward on the ground.

The scene was eerie, especially with the night setting and her emerging from the sea.

But upon closer inspection, Aurora was shocked. "John, look!"

John was equally surprised. "How did she get ashore?"

Todd had eaten too much at dinner and went out for a walk to clear his head. He was also feeling pretty down.

He had just been swindled out of ten million dollars, money he had saved for getting married.

It hurt.

Clutching his chest, Todd muttered to himself, "A whole family of leeches, always squeezing money out of me. They're going to bankrupt me sooner or later."

As he walked, Todd noticed some movement ahead. Curious, he moved closer and saw a soaking wet woman crawling out of the water, her long hair covering her face. He jumped in fright. "Kelpie! I've run into a ghost."

"Shut up." The woman snapped.

Oh, wait, it was Lori.

Todd recognized the voice immediately. He crouched down and looked closer. Lori pushed her hair out of her face and glared at him. "You're the Kelpie. Your whole family's Kelpie."

"Lori?"

Todd was stunned, taking in Lori's disheveled appearance. She was drenched, her thin clothes clinging to her body, highlighting her perfect figure.

Her curves were accentuated, and her waist was slim and delicate.

Todd swallowed hard and silently prayed, 'Lord, help me stay pure.'

Lori sat up, cross-legged, wringing out her clothes, which released a significant amount of water.

She was exhausted, breathing heavily, her chest rising and falling. From Todd's angle, he had quite the view.

Todd's ears turned red as he sat down next to her, teasing, "How did you end up crawling out of the water? Were you surfing in Sunrise City and got swept here?"

"Do you want a beating?" Lori raised her hand as if to hit him, then continued wringing out her clothes. "My cousin sent me here with a vague location. The navigation system on the boat failed, so I swam over."

"You swam over?" Todd was at a loss for words. "Lori, from the boat to here is at least twenty miles. You swam all that way?"

No wonder she was so exhausted.

Lori glared at Todd. "How do you know it's twenty miles? Did you mess with the navigation system?"

"This is Nightfall's training base. Did you think it would be easy to find? Any boat within twenty miles of the island will have its navigation system disrupted, automatically veering off course to circle around the island."

Lori muttered, "No wonder I kept going in circles. Something felt off."

Todd chuckled. "So you swam over? Why didn't you call your cousin to send someone to pick you up?"

Lori would never admit she forgot about that. She kept a straight face. "I like a challenge. I thought Nightfall was supposed to be impressive. Look, I still made it ashore. Consider this a free lesson to test your defense system. It needs improvement."

Lori spoke as if she were doing them a favor.

She stood up, brushed the sand off her clothes, and started walking. Todd warned, "Be careful."

Before he finished speaking, Lori triggered a trap. She lost her balance, and a net ensnared her, tripping her up. Immediately, countless red beams scanned the area.

These were gamma rays, capable of turning a person into mincemeat.

"Lori!"

Todd's heart was in his throat.

Lori cursed, "Damn it, this is for real."

She dodged as best as she could, tangled in the net.

The gamma rays were randomly scanning, and with the net restricting her movements, Lori wasn't as agile. One wrong move, and she'd be done for.

Just as a gamma ray was about to pierce Lori, Todd quickly pulled the nearby lever.

The gamma rays disappeared, and Lori lay on the ground, still in shock.

"Lori."

Todd immediately untangled her from the net and helped her up. "Are you hurt?"

Lori patted her chest. "Oh my God, that was terrifying. I almost died."

"Do you still underestimate Nightfall?" Todd sighed in relief. "Consider this a lesson. Don't underestimate an organization that's risen so quickly. The island is full of traps. Don't wander around."

Lori was silent.

Todd had thrown her words right back at her.

Not far away, hidden under a banana tree, Jack had witnessed the whole scene.

Summer hadn't lied.

The island was full of traps.

If he had triggered one, he wouldn't have been as lucky as Lori.

"Lori."

Aurora and John arrived. They had seen from the surveillance footage that the supposed Kelpie was Lori and rushed over.

Lori had rolled on the ground a few times, covered in sand, even in her hair, looking quite disheveled.

"Aurora." Lori waved.

Seeing John, Todd discreetly took off his jacket and draped it over Lori.

Lori glanced at him. "Why are you giving me your jacket? I'm not cold."

Todd was speechless.

She was soaked through. What could those few scraps of fabric cover?

"Put it on."

Todd wrapped the jacket around Lori, covering her properly.

Aurora walked over. "Lori, you really don't follow the rules. How did you end up crawling out of the water? When we saw you on the surveillance footage, you gave us a scare."

Todd answered for Lori, "She's amazing. Swam twenty miles to get here and even tested our defense system."

John glanced at the deactivated trap, impressed by Lori.

Lori glared at Todd. "String Bean, are you tired of living? Do you want me to throw you in the water for a night? You knew about the traps. Why didn't you warn me earlier? You're holding a grudge because I knocked you over before. You're so petty."

Everyone fell silent.

Was that something to bring up?

"Lori, come on, let's get you some dry clothes," Aurora quickly said, pulling Lori away.
