Chapter 439 Lori's Wish Fell Through
Lori stumbled over to Todd, poking him with her finger. "Hey, String Bean, don't scare me like that. Wake up, String Bean."
Todd's hair was standing on end from the lightning strike, and his face was blackened. Lori patted his face, and smoke was still coming out of his mouth.
He really got struck by lightning.
John rushed over, jumped into the ditch, and immediately started CPR.
No response. John then flipped Todd over, laying him across his thigh, and pushed on his back with one hand.
After several attempts, Todd finally showed a faint sign of life.
"Get him to the hospital, quick." John picked Todd up, Aurora went to get the car, and Ava helped Lori.
The road was under construction, so Aurora took a different route down the mountain. It was a bit longer, but better than walking.
The tattooed guy had stopped breathing after being struck, and the chubby guy had run off in fear when John arrived.
At the hospital.
Todd was rushed into surgery. After a preliminary examination, the doctor said, "Prepare yourselves for the worst."
Surviving a lightning strike is extremely rare.
John, worried that Todd's parents might not get to see him one last time, called them in the middle of the night.
If something happened to Todd, at least they could see him one last time.
Lori was also taken for a check-up. She was completely exhausted, but blood tests showed nothing wrong.
"Stop wasting time. No more tests. I need to see String Bean." Lori's fiery temper couldn't handle the waiting.
"Lori, lie back down." Aurora arrived and pushed her back onto the bed. "Take care of yourself first. We'll do more tests. Gary should be here by morning, and he can check on you if needed."
"I'm probably just hungry. Some food and I'll be fine." Lori said. "Aurora, how's String Bean?"
"He's still in surgery. Todd's parents are here and very emotional. It's best if you don't go over there right now."
Ava added, "You can't do anything to help. Worrying here or there is the same."
It was true.
Waiting outside the operating room or here, it was all the same.
Lori told the doctor, "Take as much blood as you need. Do all the tests at once. Don't keep coming back for more."
Everyone was silent.
It was the first time the doctor had heard a patient make such a request.
"We'll be thorough. Ms. Hernandez, please rest."
The doctor took the blood and left.
Ava said, "I'll get some food."
Lori finally noticed Ava's short hair and exclaimed, "Ava, you look like a man now. Did you go abroad for a sex change? No wonder you were gone for so long. Ava, are you jealous that I got with Todd? You made such a big sacrifice for me."
Ava was silent.
Aurora was silent.
One moment, Lori was worried about Todd; the next she was teasing Ava.
Aurora had wanted to comfort Lori, but Lori's words changed the mood completely.
Ava pushed Lori away. "No surgery, just a new haircut."
"That's still a big sacrifice." Lori hugged Ava again. "Ava, I didn't know you cared so much about me."
"I can't deal with you. I'm getting food." Ava got up and left.
"Ava!" Lori reached out, making it seem like Ava was leaving forever.
Ava walked faster.
Aurora said, "Looks like you don't need comforting. Wait here for the test results. I'll check on Todd."
"You all said I can't help, so I won't worry. String Bean's tough; he won't die. If he does, I'll give my life for his."
Lori was practical. Once she made up her mind, she didn't dwell on things.
"Lori, you..." Aurora didn't know what to say. Lori seemed carefree but was very pragmatic.
"Aurora, you found me, so you know who captured me. I've lived over twenty years and never been betrayed by my own people." Lori cracked her knuckles, her eyes growing cold. "If something happens to me, I'll let it go because we're family. But if something happens to String Bean, I'll make them pay. Don't blame me for being ruthless."
Aurora felt a headache coming on.
Jack had caused trouble for John, and Lori was clear-headed enough to take drastic measures.
"You all have strong personalities. What can I say?" Aurora sighed. "Everyone has their own standards. Do what you need to, but I have to tell you, Jack has developed a split personality disorder."
Aurora didn't try to persuade her. Jack had tried to bury Lori alive, and Todd got struck by lightning because of it. She couldn't protect a dangerous criminal.
Lori was stunned. "Split personality disorder?"
Aurora nodded.
Lori said, "I don't care if he's got a disorder or is mentally ill. He tried to bury me, so I'll bury him. With Richard and Mom gone, it's up to me to deal with him."
Aurora laughed. "If you handle it, that's for the best. I'll stay out of it."
Aurora trusted Lori's judgment. Ultimately, Lori had more right to deal with Jack.
Lori could even take over the Ironclad Union, and it would be justified.
Lori felt like she was being set up. "Aurora, did you plan this?"
Aurora shrugged. "What did I do? You rest here. I'll check on Todd."
Aurora found an excuse to leave.
Todd was incredibly lucky. Thanks to John's timely CPR, after several hours of surgery, he survived.
Surviving a lightning strike was a miracle.
When Lori heard Todd was okay, she breathed a sigh of relief. She asked Ava, "Ava, do you think those people on TV who survive lightning strikes get superpowers? Do you think String Bean might get some superpower?"
Ava was peeling an apple. "Like what? Flying? Teleporting?"
Lori was silent.
Ava continued, "Todd was born at the finish line. Does he need superpowers?"
Todd was the son of the CEO of Smith Films, with a fortune worth billions. He was already at the top.
"That's boring." Lori took a few bites of the apple and went to sleep.
The next morning, she went to see Todd and ran into John at the door.
"John, is String Bean awake?"
"He woke up a little while ago." John asked, "How are you feeling?"
"I'm fine. A good night's sleep and I'm back to normal." To prove it, Lori showed off some Taekwondo moves. "See? I'm fine. I'm going to see String Bean. By the way, John, did the lightning strike change him?"
Lori was still hoping Todd had gained superpowers.
John nodded, looking hesitant. "There are some changes."
"Really?" Lori was excited. "What kind of changes? Like on TV, did he get some superpower, like x-ray vision or precognition?"
John looked at Lori with a complicated expression. X-ray vision? Precognition?
Lori had quite the imagination.
"Go see for yourself."
"Okay, I'll check." Lori went in with high hopes, but soon, she was dumbfounded.
