Chapter 449 Aurora Followed by a Strange Man
When Aurora and Ava walked into the hospital room, Lori was already there with Todd, helping him build a tower of blocks like nothing had happened.
Lori was getting pretty good at playing the "mom" role.
"Aurora, Ava," Lori said, standing up and brushing off her hands. "Can you two keep an eye on things here? I need to handle the discharge paperwork. This hospital is driving me crazy."
Todd was physically fine except for his mental state, so staying in the hospital wasn't helping.
"I'll take care of the discharge paperwork," Ava offered. "By the way, should we let Todd's parents know?"
Lori waved her hand dismissively, a sly look in her eyes. "No need. Let them come to the hospital and find an empty room. Maybe the shock will make them take String Bean back."
Ava went to handle the paperwork while Aurora started packing up their things. Suddenly, Lori asked, "Aurora, where's Jack?"
Aurora hesitated for a moment before replying, "He took off."
"Good for him," Lori said with a smirk.
"Lori, why don't you stay at my place?" Aurora suggested. Even though she had already asked Ava to keep an eye on Lori, she still wanted to monitor Lori's health herself.
"Aurora, I wouldn't want to intrude on you and John," Lori said, cupping her face with a playful smile. "I heard John's been all over you lately, trying for a baby. Any news yet?"
Aurora blushed and shot Lori a look. "Getting pregnant isn't that easy."
"But didn't you get pregnant with Summer and Loren after just one night with John?"
Aurora fell silent, regretting ever sharing that detail with Lori.
Out of nowhere, Todd chimed in, "I want to have a baby."
Lori glanced at him and sighed. "You're a man. You can't have babies."
Todd just grinned foolishly. "Man, have a baby."
"He's hopeless," Lori muttered, patting Todd's head. Watching his innocent smile, she felt a sudden wave of tenderness and worry. "What if he stays like this forever?"
Lori wasn't afraid of dying, but in that moment, she felt a pang of fear. Bruce and Melissa couldn't protect Todd forever. If she died, who would look after him?
Aurora watched the scene, feeling a deep sense of melancholy.
After packing up and completing the discharge process, Lori took Todd back to her place.
Todd became Lori's shadow, following her everywhere. Aurora stayed for a bit before heading to the office to find John.
Once Aurora left, Lori put Todd to bed and handed him over to Ava. "Ava, keep an eye on him. I need to go out."
Lori changed into a sharp outfit, looking ready for action.
"Where are you going? What are you up to?" Ava asked. "I'll go with you."
"Ava, don't turn into another String Bean. I'm just going to talk to Todd's parents. I'll be back soon," Lori lied. She was actually going to find Jack.
Before Ava could say anything else, Lori was out the door.
Once outside, Lori called Jack. He didn't pick up at first, but after a couple more tries, he finally answered.
As soon as he answered, Lori exploded. "Jack, you jerk! Are you out of your mind? I'm your sister, and you dare mess with me? Do you think I'm easy to push around? Tell me where you are right now. I'm coming to find you."
Jack's cold voice came through the phone. "Lori, calm down. You still have three months left, don't you? Enjoy your time while you can."
"Damn it! I could have lived a long life, but thanks to you, I only have three months left. And you have the nerve to tell me to enjoy it? I'll give you three seconds. Either you come to me, or I come to you."
"Lori, your temper is as fiery as ever. Dad always thought highly of you. He trained you himself. With you by my side, we could make Ironclad Union even greater, maybe even surpass Nightfall and avenge Dad. If you agree to join me, I can extend your life."
Lori had never been threatened like this before.
She laughed bitterly. "Join you? Fine. Meet me at Golden River in half an hour."
"Lori, I don't trust you. If you kill John for me, I'll give you the medicine."
"You really are your father's son—cunning and ruthless. John saved your life once, and this is how you repay him? If you don't meet me, you'd better hope I don't find you. If I do, I'll beat you so badly your parents won't recognize you..."
Before she could finish, Jack hung up.
Lori was fuming.
...
On her way to the Lewis Group, Aurora suddenly felt unwell and had to pull over. She got out of the car to rest for a few minutes.
Feeling a bit better, she went to a nearby convenience store to buy some water. As she drove off, she noticed an Audi in her rearview mirror.
At first, she didn't think much of it, but after several traffic lights, the car was still there.
Was she being followed?
Aurora took a closer look. The driver was a man, but the sun visor obscured half his face. He seemed familiar, but she couldn't place him.
When the light turned green, Aurora sped up, her heart racing as the Audi continued to follow.
She drove into the Lewis Group's underground parking lot and called John. "Honey, someone's following me. I'm in the company parking lot."
"I'm on my way."
John was in a meeting, but immediately stopped and rushed to the parking lot.
Aurora parked her car but didn't dare get out. She waited for a while, the parking lot eerily quiet. The Audi hadn't followed her in.
Feeling a strange compulsion, Aurora got out of the car and looked around. No one was there.
Suddenly, she felt dizzy and struggled to breathe, leaning against her car for support.
"Are you okay?"
A man appeared behind her, asking politely, "Do you need help?"
Aurora recognized him as the man who had been following her and instinctively stepped back. "Who are you? Why have you been following me?"
"I mean no harm. Don't be afraid."
The man's features were sharp and cold. Though she had never seen him before, Aurora felt a strange sense of familiarity.
"Who are you?"
"I am..."
Before he could finish, he saw someone approaching and quickly walked towards another exit.
