Chapter 57 John Asked Consecutive Questions
The struggle of big shots was complicated.
It's often the little people who suffer.
As soon as the big boss arrived, Aurora's workload increased.
Everyone was on edge, afraid of making mistakes.
If the president and the vice president clashed, it could easily harm these innocent employees.
No one left early today; even at quitting time, everyone stayed at their posts, continuing to work.
Time ticked by, and it was almost 7 PM.
Looking at the mountain of work on her desk, Aurora complained, "I won't be able to finish translating these documents even by tomorrow."
"Even if it takes until next year, you need to hurry up. The big boss is waiting for them."
Her supervisor, Linda James, suddenly appeared behind her.
Aurora wasn't afraid of the workload, but what about Loren?
She had left Loren at daycare, and she needed to pick him up by 6:30 PM. It was already past that time, and the daycare teacher had sent a message urging her to come.
Aurora was anxious.
It would be easy for her to skip overtime; she was Kevin's adopted daughter, and even if she skipped work, it wouldn't matter. But she didn't plan to rely on the Robinson family for convenience.
The daycare teacher called, and Aurora, seeing the caller ID, said to Linda, "Ms. James, can I take half an hour off? I'll be right back and promise to finish my work before leaving tonight."
This was the first time Aurora had asked for leave since coming to headquarters, and she didn't act like a spoiled princess. She got along well with her colleagues.
Linda didn't make it difficult for Aurora and said, "Go quickly and come back soon."
"Thank you, Ms. James."
Aurora grabbed her bag, answered the phone, and rushed out. "Ms. Romero, I'm sorry, something came up. I'll be there soon."
She had to hurry to pick up Loren.
She would have to work overtime tonight anyway, so she could only bring Loren back to the office and finish her work before going home together.
Just as Aurora left, Linda received a call from the president's office. "Send Aurora to the office."
Aurora hurried to the daycare, where all the other children had been picked up, leaving only Loren.
The daycare was quiet, and Loren sat alone on the swing, head down, swinging his short legs. The orange light enveloped Loren, casting a faint glow and making him look even more lonely.
Seeing this, Aurora felt a pang in her heart.
"Loren," Aurora called out.
Loren looked up, saw Aurora, jumped off the swing, ran to her, and hugged her leg, suddenly bursting into tears. "I thought you didn't want me anymore. Please don't leave me. I'll be good."
Loren's crying broke Aurora's heart. She hugged Loren and gently comforted him. "Don't cry, Loren. It's my fault. How could I not want you? I was working late today, so I came late."
Aurora felt very guilty. Loren was an orphan, lacking a sense of security and afraid of being abandoned. It was understandable, and she should have thought of that.
Loren cried and asked, "Really? You're not lying to me?"
"You're so cute, so how could I lie to you?" Aurora rubbed Loren's head. "Don't cry, or you'll look like a little kitten and won't be cute anymore."
"I'm not crying." Loren snorted, turned around, and wiped his tears.
Aurora couldn't help but laugh.
"Miss White," Ms. Jordan walked over and said, "If you're busy next time, just let us know in advance, so Loren won't worry. This child is much more sensitive than the others."
"Thank you, Ms. Jordan. I'm really sorry for the trouble today," Aurora thanked her repeatedly.
Aurora only had half an hour off, so she had to hurry back to the office.
She took a cab and brought Loren back to the office, only to find that all her colleagues had left.
Was it already time to go home?
As Aurora was thinking this, Linda suddenly appeared behind her. "Aurora, take this document to the president's office. Mr. Lewis specifically asked for you to deliver it."
Specifically?
Did John know she was working at his company?
It seemed she couldn't avoid this.
She had run away from John's wedding and now worked at his company. Would he hold a grudge and make things difficult for her?
"Yes, Ms. James" Aurora then asked, "Ms. James, where is everyone else?"
"Everyone's off work," Linda said, "Once you deliver the document, you can leave, too."
"Weren't we supposed to work overtime? I still have a pile of work on my desk."
"It's not urgent. Miss Elena said it's not needed right away." Linda noticed Loren and exclaimed, "What a beautiful child! Aurora, is this yours?"
Aurora and Loren had an adoptive relationship, but she couldn't say he was her son or adopted child. As she was pondering, Loren's young voice spoke up, "Aurora, I'm hungry."
"I have some snacks here. You can eat them first, and after work, I'll take you to dinner." Aurora took out some bread and fruit from the drawer.
"Is he your brother? He does look a bit like you," Linda laughed. "Aurora, quickly deliver the document and get off work early. I should be heading home, too."
"Okay, goodbye, Ms. James."
With Linda gone, the large company was left with only Aurora and Loren.
"Loren, wait here for me. I'll be right back."
"Okay." Loren obediently sat on the chair.
Aurora felt assured and went to deliver the document.
It was almost 8 PM, and John hadn't left yet?
It was Aurora's first time in the president's office. She stood at the door and knocked, but there was no response.
Suspicious, Aurora pushed the door open and entered, finding the large office empty.
Suddenly, she heard the sound of running water from the office's restroom.
She thought, 'No way.'
'Could Mr. Lewis be taking a shower in there?'
Aurora planned to leave the document and go, but the restroom door suddenly opened, and John stood at the door, wrapped in a towel.
Aurora instinctively turned around, and when she saw who was standing at the door, she was almost scared out of her wits.
This time, it wasn't John's facial scars that frightened her but the scene itself.
For a moment, she felt as if she was seeing John in their rented apartment, the boyfriend who drove for a ride-hailing service, overlapping with the John, who was the head of the Lewis family.
If it weren't for the hideous scars on John's face, she would have almost thought the man in front of her was her ex-boyfriend.
She had broken up with her ex-boyfriend, John, so the John before her was not technically her ex-boyfriend.
Aurora quickly lowered her head. "Mr. Lewis, I've delivered the document."
"Okay."
His voice was rich and magnetic, deeply resonant and extremely pleasant to hear.
John took steps towards Aurora.
As the scent of his body wash grew stronger, Aurora's heart suddenly tensed.
John got closer and closer, one step, two steps...
Then, he cornered her against the wall.
"Are you nervous?"
"No." Aurora's eyes looked elsewhere, not daring to meet John's gaze.
John let out a cold laugh. "You ran away from the wedding, yet you came to work at my company. Miss White, are you playing hard to get?"
"Mr. Lewis, you misunderstand. I just wanted a job," Aurora patiently explained, "I have no ulterior motives towards you."
John's deep eyes stared at Aurora, pondering for a moment. "Why?"
Aurora was somewhat confused; she didn't understand what John was asking.
Why what?
In fact, John himself didn't know what he meant. Did he want to ask why she broke up with him?
Why did she deceive him?
Why she didn't visit him in the hospital?
Was she really that heartless?
John suddenly let out a self-mocking laugh. "Miss White, you are truly carefree."
When she said it was over, she cut ties cleanly.
John felt as if his chest was stuffed with cotton, making it hard to breathe.
"What?" Aurora found John's words even more baffling, his tone so strange that she couldn't understand.
John felt a sense of powerlessness, like punching a cotton ball.
Aurora could kick Daniel into the water, break up with him, and immediately get together with John. What could John expect from Aurora?
John's brows furrowed tightly. "Aurora, have you ever truly loved someone?"
Aurora was left bewildered by the question.
But she still instinctively thought about it.
When she was with Daniel, she was serious. When she was with John, she genuinely tried to have a relationship, or even a future together.
But...
"Mr. Lewis, I..."
Aurora's words were cut off by a young voice.
"Aurora, I need to go to the bathroom."
