Chapter 405 Jack is the Traitor
After Lori fainted, the man who had been restrained stood up and revealed his face.
It was Christopher.
Christopher took off his jacket and tossed it into the sea. He walked over to the unconscious Lori, grabbed her face, and sneered, "Looks like she still ended up in my hands. Put her on the boat and take her away."
"Yes, Mr. Radcliffe."
The men treated Christopher with utmost respect and dragged Lori towards the boat they had prepared earlier.
Christopher glanced back in the direction of Mistveil Forest and scoffed, "So much for being impenetrable. Our leader found the flaw, and the Ironclad Union will soon replace Nightfall."
...
The person on duty in the information room was Eli.
After some questioning, John obtained an important clue.
Eli said, "Mr. Lewis, I haven't left the information room for a second. Oh, Justina came by and brought me some good liquor. I sneaked a couple of sips."
John's deep eyes narrowed slightly. "Where is Justina?"
"Mr. Lewis, Justina isn't in her dorm. I couldn't find her anywhere."
John felt uneasy and quickly walked out of the information room.
Just then, Gary arrived.
"I have something to discuss with you."
"Talk while we walk," John said, heading towards the bedroom.
Gary said, "I did a blood analysis for Jack and found some issues. There's amphetamine in his system."
John stopped in his tracks. "Are you saying Jack..."
Gary nodded. "Yes, I've kept this from Aurora for now. The amount is small, so it wasn't consumed recently."
"Got it," John said, continuing forward. "The real map might have been stolen."
"Are you talking about the island's defense map?" Gary was shocked. "That's serious. If someone sneaks onto the island, we wouldn't even know."
"They're already here," John said, quickening his pace back to the room where Summer and Loren were.
Summer asked, "Dad, what's going on?"
"Take care of your brother," John said, heading straight to the bedside and feeling under the pillow. It was indeed gone.
Gary was tense. "It's really missing?"
John nodded and lifted the pillow and sheets.
Gary slapped his forehead. "You hid something so important under the pillow? Clearly, you have no experience hiding money. The pillow is the most obvious place."
John replied seriously, "Aurora gives me enough allowance every month. I don't need to hide money. Don't try to stir up trouble between us."
Gary was silent.
John, is this really the key issue?
"Dad, what are you looking for?"
"Your dad lost the island's map, which means all the defenses are useless," Gary muttered. "Who would be smart enough to know the map in the information room is fake and the real one is under your parents' pillow?"
"Who stole it doesn't matter. I have a backup plan," John said, giving Gary a look that said he was overreacting. "As a leader, you need to be prepared."
Aurora returned just then.
"You're back. How did it go?" Aurora asked. "I heard the map was lost? Is this it?"
Aurora held up a USB drive.
"Aurora, how did you get this?" Gary asked, surprised.
"I found it on my way back," Aurora said, handing it to John. "Keep it safe next time."
John clenched his fist around the USB drive.
Aurora's story had holes. She hadn't seen the map, so how did she know the USB contained the island's map?
John said nothing and asked, "Where did you go?"
"To see Jack. He's very weak," Aurora said. "By the way, how's Lori? Did someone really sneak onto the island?"
"Not sure yet," John said, handing the USB to Gary. "You keep it. You're good at hiding things."
Gary was stunned.
John walked to the sofa and turned on the computer. The screen showed an aerial view of the island, dynamic, like a dense web with many red and green dots.
The red dots flashed continuously, while the green dots moved around.
Gary was shocked. "John, this..."
The green dots indicated intruders.
From the distribution of the green dots, it was clear they were heading towards Mistveil Forest.
There were about ten people.
John interrupted Gary, "Perfect for an ambush. They came here to die."
Aurora realized the seriousness of the situation and felt her heart race. "John, what do the red and green dots mean?"
Summer explained, "Mom, the red dots are the island's defenses, and the green dots are intruders. They're getting close to the red dots."
Suddenly, more green dots appeared, moving towards Jack's room.
John quickly opened another computer. The surveillance showed eight men heading straight for Jack's place, soon carrying him out.
Jack was unconscious.
Gary stared at the screen, shocked. "Aren't those Lion's men?"
Aurora saw Jack being taken and panicked. "John, send someone to stop them."
"It's too late," John said simply.
Gary looked at John, puzzled. This was John's territory. Stopping a group of people should be easy.
Gary said nothing.
John stood up and instructed, "Aurora, stay in the room with the kids."
Then he left, deploying dozens of people to guard the room.
Gary followed him out. "Why did you lie to Aurora? Did you intentionally let Lion's men take Jack?"
"He's the biggest threat on the island," John said, his eyes deep and unreadable. "Aurora lied earlier. She must have taken the USB from Jack."
Gary was shocked again. "Are you saying Jack is the traitor? But why would he do this? If he wanted to take down Nightfall, he wouldn't come with so few people. Aurora is his sister, and you saved his life. Without your arrangement for his heart transplant, he'd be dead."
John lit a cigarette and stared at the sea. "He's still Richard's son."
"Are you saying he's avenging his father?" Gary frowned. "Did you suspect Jack all along? Why did you bring him here?"
"Aurora must have sensed something, too."
"That's not what I asked," Gary said, frustrated.
"He's Aurora's brother. During the years Nicole and Emily bullied her, Jack and Aurora relied on each other."
John paused and continued, "Jack is also my mother-in-law's friend's son, Lori's brother. Sandra and Jennifer are dead. If Jack gets hurt, it will create a rift between Aurora and me, and we'll make more enemies. It's not worth it."
Gary sighed. "Married men are different. You used to be so carefree. Now you worry about everything. So what now? Do nothing?"
"Jack can live, but the others won't leave. I've already set up an ambush in the sea."
"No wonder you have time to smoke," Gary said, relieved. "It was a false alarm."
