Chapter 329: Society is Simple, It's the People Who Are Complicated

Break him up with Todd?

Allan was completely baffled. Did he mishear, or did he misunderstand?

"Lori, what do you mean?" Allan thought it was best to ask clearly.

Lori thought Allan was being threatened and sneered, "Don't think I don't know what kind of relationship you have with Todd. Do you want to tell me where Ava is, or should I handle it myself?"

"You know everything?" Allan frowned, thinking Lori had found out about his family relationship with Todd.

This statement made things even worse.

In Lori's mind, it was a solid confirmation?

Lori nodded, "Yes, I knew all along. Don't think you can hide it from me."

Allan breathed a sigh of relief. It seemed he had misunderstood Lori's meaning. He explained, "Lori, we didn't intentionally hide it from you. My relationship with Todd is indeed inconvenient to make public, and we didn't think it was necessary before."

Allan was a cop, and Todd was in business. If people knew they were relatives, it would definitely cause unnecessary trouble and criticism. If Todd had any issues in the future, people would think Allan was using his connections to cover for the Smith family.

So, not many people knew about their family relationship, and they didn't make it public.

What Allan didn't know was that his phrase "inconvenient to make public" made things even more suspicious and impossible to clear up.

Lori threatened, "Anyway, I know now, Mr. Jennings. Either tell me where Ava is, or I'll expose your relationship. Your choice."

"Lori," Allan repeated helplessly, "Ava has been moved. I really don't know where she is."

"Mr. Jennings, do you think I'm a child?" Lori gripped the edge of the table, ready to flip it over. "I might not always think things through, but today, I definitely am. You've been in the police force for so long; even if you don't know, you can guess."

Lori didn't believe Allan didn't know anything.

Allan shook his head, "This meal really isn't enjoyable."

If he had known Todd tricked him into meeting Lori, he wouldn't have come.

"Mr. Jennings, think it over. I have plenty of time." Lori spoke coldly.

"I really don't know exactly where Ava is, but there are three most likely places," Allan replied. "One is the safest prison in all of Silvercrest City, Gamma Prison, and the other is Steelbar Pen."

"And the third place?"

Allan was silent for a while before saying, "The third place might not be a prison."

"Then where is it?" Lori was anxious. "Don't beat around the bush."

"Lori, it's dangerous no matter where you go. I'm warning you, if you want to save Ava, do it the right way. Don't resort to underhanded methods." Allan really admired Lori and didn't want her to get into trouble.

But unfortunately, they were on opposing sides.

"Cut the crap and tell me where the third place is. I know what I'm doing. I started out with Ava when I was sixteen. It's been seven years. Do you really think we've survived this long by luck?"

Allan was shocked.

Lori started out at sixteen?

Allan never underestimated Lori. In his thirty-plus years, this was the first time he admired a woman.

"Lori, actually, saving Ava isn't impossible. If you capture Sandra and Richard and make up for your mistakes, I'll vouch for you to my superiors. Given your contributions, they'll definitely go easy on you. This time, I'll make an exception and give you this authority. You have a month. I'll explain everything to my them."

Lori hesitated.

Capturing Sandra was no problem, but capturing Richard made Lori somewhat hesitant.

Seeing the tense atmosphere, Todd couldn't hold back and walked over, "Allan, are you two still not done talking? Just give a straightforward answer, for my sake."

Allan glanced at Todd, "Do you think that's possible?"

Todd pretended to cough a few times.

Lori slammed the table and stood up, "Fine, I agree. I'll capture them. But if you don't release Ava by then, don't blame me for being rude. I can ruin your relationship, even if it's a gay one. I can make him like me."

Lori clenched her fist, making a cracking sound to show her determination.

Allan finally understood the situation, but now he was confused again.

Todd was terrified, thinking his cover was blown. He quickly changed the subject, "Stop chatting and eat. The food's getting cold."

Allan still couldn't figure it out and asked, "I don't even have a girlfriend. Whose relationship are you ruining?"

"No girlfriend, but you have a boyfr—"

Before Lori could finish, Todd suddenly shouted.

Lori and Allan both looked at him.

Todd raised his hand, "It's broken again. Lori, take me to the hospital."

"Why should I take you?"

"You broke it, so you have to be responsible. Stop talking and take me to the hospital." Todd used his slightly better hand to pull Lori.

The conversation was over, so Allan stood up, "I'll take him."

Lori's eyes widened, marveling at the power of a boyfriend.

Half an hour later, Allan and the others arrived at the hospital.

Lori stayed in the car outside. She couldn't show her face too much, being a wanted person.

The doctor re-fixed Todd's injury and put on a cast.

Allan sat across from him. As soon as the doctor left, he immediately asked, "What did Lori mean by her words earlier? What relationship, gay?"

Todd played dumb, "What? I don't know!"

"Todd," Allan's tone grew heavier, "If you don't tell me, I'll ask Lori."

If he asked, wouldn't it be exposed?

Before Allan could leave the room, Todd explained, "Lori thinks we're a couple, Allan. It's not my fault. How was I supposed to know what she was thinking? She misunderstood us."

Allan was shocked.

What did he do to make Lori misunderstand so much?

Todd sighed, "I was just trying to save you from embarrassment, stopping her from talking nonsense. I tried hard to explain, but she didn't believe me. There's nothing I can do."

If Allan knew what Todd was thinking, his face would definitely turn angry. Todd's explanation was practically slander.

Allan thought back to his conversation with Lori and didn't doubt Todd's words. Given Lori's thought process, it was indeed worrisome.

"If there's nothing else, I'll go. I'll explain it myself." Allan wouldn't take the blame.

Allan finally understood why Lori mentioned Todd during their dates.

He thought Lori was interested in Todd, but it turned out Lori thought he and Todd were a couple.

This misunderstanding was getting deeper.

He also understood why Lori sometimes looked at him with pity and sympathy.

Allan strode out, and Todd quickly got out of bed to follow.

Lori, in the car, saw Allan coming out with a strange expression. She was puzzled when Allan suddenly walked to the car and voiced, "I don't like men. I like women. I'm not gay."
