Chapter 64 The Brakes Had Failed

Aurora's heart felt as if it were about to leap out of her chest. Wrapped in his coat, she was completely enveloped by his scent, causing her mind to go utterly blank.

John's kiss grew deeper, with an intensity that felt as though he wanted to consume her whole.

Ever since Aurora had said they should break up, John had felt a heavy weight on his chest.

He found it hard breathe. The girl he had always wanted to protect and cherish not only didn't have him in her heart, but had even had a child with someone else.

A child out of wedlock!

What kind of man could make her willing to bear his child just as she became an adult?

John was insanely jealous of that man. He was consumed by a maddening envy.

He didn't dare investigate, didn't dare ask, and didn't dare bring it up.

After suppressing his jealousy and anger for more than half a month, it all erupted at this moment. He wanted to possess her so fiercely that she would belong only to him.

He had never felt so strongly about this before.

The firewood in the stove crackled and burned.

Aurora snapped back to reality, realizing what they were doing, and quickly trying to push John away.

John held her tightly in his arms. No matter how hard she pushed, she couldn't break free.

John's loss of control made Aurora a little scared.

"Ouch!"

A sharp pain stung her lips.

The taste of blood spread in her mouth.

Aurora's lip was bitten, and John immediately let go of her, flustered. "Aurora, I..."

John was remorseful for losing control just now.

Aurora suddenly felt very wronged for some reason.

She turned her face away, staring at the burning flames, and laughed to herself. "John, do you think I'm an easy woman?"

She had felt his anger and turmoiljust now.

John's brow furrowed deeply, his gaze heavy as he looked at her.

Aurora trembled, tears obscuring her vision. She forced a smile and said, "You were feeling very conflicted just now, weren't you? You do care about my past. In fact, it bothers you a lot. After all, which man wouldn't mind that his woman had someone else's child?"

John had been raised in luxury from a young age and had a proud and aloof nature. As the eldest son of the Lewis Family, he wouldn't use anything that someone else had already touched.

But then he met Aurora.

And Aurora had given birth to another man's child.

John clenched his fists, his expression cold. Suddenly, he punched the wall, his knuckles instantly dripping with blood.

Aurora was shocked. "John, what are you doing?"

She quickly grabbed a tissue to stop John's bleeding.

Seeing her worried expression, John stared at her, a bit dazed. He suddenly embracedher tightly and said in a low voice, "Aurora, let's start over."

Aurora's trembled.

At that moment, Aurora felt conflicted. Hearing John's words brought her joy, but that joy couldn't dispel the inferiority she felt deep down.

The firelight from the stove reflected on their faces, making everything around them seem like a backdrop, frozen in time.

Aurora looked up at his chiseled jaw.

She couldn't deny that John had become an indelible part of her heart. She wanted to say yes, recklessly.

But instead, she said, "John, we both need to calm down."

Decisions made in the heat of the moment would only make things worse.

Aurora stepped out of his embrace, taking a deep breath. "From the beginning, we were too hasty. We treated our relationship like it was a game. Maybe this is an opportunity for us to think carefully about whether we can continue down this path."

They had met too suddenly and fallen in love too quickly, as if they wanted to ignite all their passion at once. And because they had been moving too fast, it was hard to overcome a crisis when one appeared.

After she spoke, Aurora walked out of the kitchen.

She heard John say as she left, "Aurora, I never treated it like a game."

Aurora paused, feeling a sudden urge to cry.

She didn't look back, but her lips involuntarily curved into a slight smile.

John stood in place, rainwater dripping from the eaves, the distant mountains hazy, forming a picturesque scene.

Master Bates had already revised the design draft. Aurora stood under the eaves, gazing into the distance.

Perhaps after staying in the city for so long, she suddenly liked the tranquility of the mountaintop, tucked away from the hustle and bustle.

"The scenery here is nice, isn't it?" Master Bates said, leaning on his cane as he walked up to Aurora. "The most famous thing about Peach Blossom Mountain is the sunrise. It's truly spectacular."

Aurora had been busy making a living all these years and hadn't had the time to appreciate a sunrise.

She really wanted to see the splendor of it.

Aurora said, "I have to take the design drafts back to the office. Maybe next time. If I have the chance again, I'll definitely come."

"Young people are too restless. Few can calm down," Master Bates said meaningfully. "Sometimes, if you miss something once, you'll miss it for a lifetime, and you'll regret it."

Aurora remained silent.

"Dinner's ready." John came out of the kitchen carrying a dish.

Master Bates, smelling the aroma, started to feel hungry. "John, the last time I had your cooking was years ago. I have to say, I do miss it."

Years ago?

Aurora looked at John. 'Have these two known each other for that long?' she wondered.

Master Bates looked at Aurora. "Sit down and eat with us before you go."

Aurora glanced at the time; it was getting late.

"No, Mr. Bates, you two should enjoy your meal. I have to go now. I'll visit again another day."

The rain had eased up, and if she didn't leave now, the mountain road would be harder to navigate in the dark.

Also, she had left Loren with Sophia, which made her feel uneasy.

"I'll go with you." John grabbed the car keys and said to Master Bates, "Mr. Bates, I'll come back another day to have dinner with you."

Master Bates nodded. "Alright, I won't keep you. Be careful on the road. The mountain road is tricky after the rain."

John looked at Aurora. "Take my car."

Aurora replied, "No, I drove the company car. I need to take it back."

John said, "Then I'll drive your car."

The mountain road was difficult to navigate, and it was getting dark. John didn't feel comfortable with the idea of Aurora driving alone.

Aurora thought about how the car had skidded on the way here. Her driving skills weren't great, so she relented. "Alright."

As for what happened in the kitchen, neither of them brought it up again.

Aurora sat in the passenger seat, and John drove. On the way down the mountain, he didn't dare drive too fast.

It was silent in the car. Aurora looked out the window, and suddenly John's voice broke the silence.

"My mom didn't set me up with a girlfriend."

Aurora didn't react at first. She turned to look at John, then realized what he meant.

Aurora said, "Then what about what you said before?"

John said, "I said it to provoke you."

Hearing this, Aurora couldn't help but laugh.

Still, John's tactic had worked. Hearing that he was dating someone new did make her feel uncomfortable.

"I saw a woman visiting you at the hospital that day. Who was she?"

"A colleague." John wasn't exactly lying. Elena was his secretary, and they had a superior-subordinate relationship, which made them colleagues.

"Your company has women driving for ride-hailing services?" Aurora wasn't convinced. "That woman had a great figure and was dressed in designer clothes. She didn't look like a ride-hailing driver."

John replied, "She's the boss's secretary, not a driver."

"Does she have a thing for you?" Aurora said, suddenly feeling a sense of unease.

"No." John answered firmly. At this moment, he couldn't afford any hesitation.

Aurora snorted. "I don't believe you."

Aurora didn't realize that their interaction had unknowingly returned to how it used to be.

John smirked and glanced at Aurora. "You can ask her yourself next time."

As the car approached a curve, another car came from the opposite direction. John slowed down to avoid it, but when he stepped on the brake, the car didn't slow down.

John's expression instantly turned grim.

The brakes had failed.
