Chapter 224 John Was Ecstatic
Gary's words hit John like a ton of bricks. This wasn't the first time someone had claimed Summer and Loren were his kids. Someone had even kidnapped them once to get to him.
John used to think it was just Wade spreading lies to mess with him. But now, he wasn't so sure.
He started thinking back to when Helen was first attacked. If Emily was just jealous of Aurora, why would she go after Helen?
A suspicion crept into his mind, and John asked, his voice rough but tinged with excitement, "Gary, do you think Summer and Loren look like me?"
Gary thought for a moment and said, "Honestly, Summer looks a lot like you, both in looks and personality. If someone said you two were father and son, I'd buy it. But you and Ms. White have only known each other for less than a year, so how could there be children that age?"
Because of this, John had never considered the possibility. 'Judging by the age of the kids, if they really are mine, it means the person who saved me back then was Aurora,' he thought.
It was the only thing that made sense. After all, besides Aurora, he'd only been with one other woman five years ago.
The lighting was dim back then, and he didn't see her face clearly. But now, thinking back, the feeling that woman gave him was the same as the feeling Aurora gave him now. Their bodies were equally soft.
Gary said, "I think it's best to do a paternity test."
"Do it now. Get a test for me and Summer right away," John said, eager to know the answer.
The thought that it was Aurora back then filled him with joy. In other words, Aurora had always been his, and only his.
Even though John had said he didn't mind before, sometimes thinking that Aurora had been with someone else made him feel regretful and jealous. No man wanted his woman to be anything but completely his.
Gary reminded him, "Summer just left with Ms. White. To do the test, we'll have to wait until tomorrow, and the results will take at least three days."
But John couldn't wait anymore. It was too torturous. "Get the car ready. We're going to the prison. I need to see Emily," he urged, as this was the quickest way to find out the truth.
"You think Emily would know?" Gary's eyes lit up.
"Emily has always been jealous of Aurora. When my mom had her accident, it was right when Summer and Loren's identities were revealed. My mom wasn't in the hall at the time; she had gone out. That's very unusual. She must have had something more important to do."
Gary nodded. "You mean Aunt Helen might have secretly done a paternity test? And Emily found out, so she attacked Aunt Helen because of it?"
"That's just my guess. Whether it's true or not, I need to get an answer today," John replied.
And until he got the answer, he couldn't let Aurora know. He didn't want to get his hopes up for nothing.
"Alright, I'll get the car." Gary immediately went out.
An hour later.
Night had fallen.
John and Gary showed up at the entrance of the women's prison. They had already informed the prison on the way, so as soon as they arrived, the gates opened.
The warden, a middle-aged man with a big belly, came forward to greet them with a fawning smile. "Mr. Lewis."
John, wearing sunglasses, sat in a wheelchair, pushed by Gary. "Where's Emily?" he demanded.
"I'll take you to her right away, Mr. Lewis." The warden didn't know why John suddenly wanted to see Emily, but he still led the way, saying, "This inmate has been acting like a lunatic since she got here. She always mumbles to herself and doesn't get along with the other female inmates. When she first arrived, she often got into fights, but she stopped after a while and just sits alone, staring blankly."
Gary saw the same Emily the warden described. She was leaning against the head of the bed, staring at the ceiling, rhythmically banging the back of her head against the wall, while mumbling and occasionally laughing.
Emily's belly was already very big, about six or seven months along.
Gary asked, "Have you had a doctor check on her?"
John, unable to see Emily, asked, "What do you see?"
"I think Emily's got some mental issues," Gary said.
Emily, who had always lived a pampered life, had never suffered like this. Being confined in a small space without seeing the light of day had taken a toll on her mental state.
The warden said, "We had a doctor check her before, but they didn't find anything. Besides, nine out of ten people who come in here go crazy."
Mental illness was a psychological issue and hard to diagnose.
Gary said, "We need to ask Emily something. Warden, could you wait outside?"
In other words, the content of their questions later was not for outsiders to know.
The warden was very tactful. "Alright, I'll wait outside. If you need anything, just let me know."
After the warden left, John, using his hearing to locate Emily, looked accurately in her direction and asked in a deep voice, "Emily, I'm John. Why did you hurt my mom? You haven't said the reason. Is it because Summer and Loren are my sons?"
Emily, who had been mumbling and banging her head, stopped when she heard the last sentence and instinctively looked at John.
"No, it's not," Emily said, shaking her head, her reaction intense.
John sternly asked, "Then what is it? Emily, I don't have much patience. I'll ask you one last time. Are Summer and Loren my sons? You can choose to keep hiding and pretend to be crazy, but once I do a paternity test, I'll still know the truth. But you'll miss the chance to get out of here early. I'll give you one minute to think about it."
John didn't care if Emily was really crazy or pretending. He just wanted the answer. "Gary, start the timer."
"Alright." Gary took out his watch and kept an eye on it. "Thirty seconds left."
Time passed quickly.
"Ten, nine, eight..." With each count from Gary, Emily's nerves tightened a bit more. She was weighing her options. She wanted to get out, but she didn't want Aurora to be happy.
Emily knew that once Summer and Loren's parentage was revealed, Aurora's status in the Lewis family would be even higher. With two sons, Aurora's position as Mrs. Lewis would be secure.
But if she didn't tell the truth, she'd have to stay here for more than ten years.
In reality, all of this was Emily's own speculation. Even without those two kids, Aurora's status in John's heart wouldn't change at all. If they were the Lewis family's children, it would just be the icing on the cake.
"Three, two, one."
As the last number was called, Emily quickly said, "I'll tell you. Summer and Loren are the Lewis family's children." She stumbled off the iron bed and gripped the iron bars with both hands. "Mr. Lewis, I've told you. Please let me out. This place is inhumane. My baby is about to be born. Please let me out."
No matter how stubborn she had been, after being locked up for so long without a single visitor, Emily's resolve had crumbled bit by bit.
Emily's words made John instinctively grip the wheelchair's armrests, unable to hide his joy. The woman from back then was really Aurora. Their fate had been sealed from that moment.
Back then, Aurora had detoxified him. Years later, they met again, and he detoxified Aurora. Their children had also found their way back to them by chance. It seemed everything was predestined.
Thinking that Summer and Loren were his sons, John couldn't help but smile with joy. Being too ecstatic, he said to Emily, "I'll help you. I'll get your sentence reduced by two years. If you behave well, you'll be out in a few years."
Reducing her sentence by two years was the greatest mercy John could show Emily. This was because she had revealed Summer and Loren's parentage and because her baby was about to be born.
Hearing this, Emily's face turned ashen. "Only two years. Mr. Lewis."
John ignored Emily and had Gary push him out.
"Gary, I have two sons," John said, unable to hide his joy. "Summer and Loren are really my kids. They're amazing kids."
"Don't gloat. Having sons is no big deal."
"I have two sons," John said, beaming with pride. "Aurora gave birth to them for me."
