Chapter 35 The Older, the Wiser

John glanced lightly at Lloyd. "Not interested."

"John," Lloyd deliberately put on a stern face and said, "Can you bear to let me pass away without ever holding a great-grandchild?"

"You have dozens of grandchildren. If you just say the word, within a year, you'll have hundreds of great-grandchildren."

"John, last time the daughter of the White family ran away from the wedding. I thought that girl was pretty good andstrong-willed. How about..."

John interrupted Lloyd in a flat tone. "Sam and Tyler, take Mr. Lloyd Lewisback."

Sam said, "Mr. Lloyd Lewis, please get in the car."

Lloyd looked at John. "You're not coming back with me?"

"I have things to do."

John dismissed Lloyd.

Lloyd got in the car, Sam drove, and Tyler sat in the passenger seat.

As the car started, Lloyd began probing for information, sighing deeply. "John is already in his thirties, and he doesn't even have a woman by his side. Do you think John doesn't like women? Does he like men? Should I find a few men to try?"

This shocked Sam so much that he almost hit the car in front.

Lloyd continued, "I see you two have been with John the longest. John must be very satisfied with you. I wonder if John likes boys like you. I'm very open-minded, if..."

Sam quickly interrupted, terrified. "Mr. Lloyd Lewis, rest assured. Mr. John Lewisdefinitely likes women, not us men."

Tyler, also full of horror, added, "Yes, Mr. John Lewis has a woman he likes."

As soon as he said it, Tyler regretted it.

He had let it slip.

Sam glared at Tyler.

Lloyd was too cunning.

With just a few words, he got the information out.

Lloyd smiled. "I see. What's the name of the girl John likes? Which family is she from?"

Sam and Tyler wore pained expressions.

"Mr. Lloyd Lewis, please don't ask us. If Mr. John Lewis finds out we let it slip, he'll definitely punish us severely."

"I'll keep it a secret for you," Lloyd said with a smile, "With me backing you up, that brat wouldn't dare do anything to you."

Sam and Tyler shook their heads, refusing to say anything more.

Lloyd knew he couldn't get any more information, so he sighed. "Ever since John was abandoned by that girl five years ago, he's been too heartbroken to find another girlfriend. I've arranged four marriages for him, and none of them succeeded. How can I, as his grandfather, not be worried?"

Sam and Tyler exchanged a glance. Lloyd was putting on an act again, and they couldn't fall for it.

In the hospital, Aurora was examining her mother's belongings. The redwood box was locked, and without a key, forcing it open might damage it.

Aurora didn't want her mother's belongings to be damaged, so she decided not to open it for now.

Jack, leaning on the table and staring at the redwood box, asked, "Aurora, do you think there's an inheritance from Mom in there?"

"I'll find a locksmith to try later," Aurora replied, "Jack, how are you feeling today?"

"The same as always." Jack suddenly grabbed Aurora's hand and said, "Aurora, can you let me leave the hospital? I want to go out and see the world. Staying in the hospital is making me sick even if I wasn't."

"No way," Aurora refused firmly. "Any other request is fine, but not this one."

"Aurora," Jack pleaded. "Even for half a day."

Aurora knew Jack was bored in the hospital. If she didn't let him out, he might sneak out behind her back.

"This weekend, I can take you out for half a day."

"Really?" Jack was thrilled. "Aurora, I love you to death."

Seeing Jack so happy, Aurora was happy, too.

Aurora really hoped Jack's illness would get better, so he could live like a normal person.

Lunchtime was almost over, so Aurora couldn't stay long. She reminded Jack not to run around and to listen to the doctors before leaving the hospital to head back.

Just as she left the hospital, John's car pulled up beside her.

John had already taken off his mask, changed into ordinary clothes, and was driving a rideshare car worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Aurora was surprised. "What are you doing here?"

John smiled. "I saw you from across the street and came over."

Aurora opened the car door and got in. "I'm going back to the company."

"Okay." John started the car and asked, "Aurora, why were you coming out of the hospital?"

"To see Jack," Aurora added, "my brother."

"What illness does he have?"

"He has a heart condition, congenital heart disease." Aurora no longer minded telling John about her situation and didn't hide it.

"I know a heart disease specialist. I'll have him take a look at Jack sometime."

"That would be great." Aurora didn't have much hope. Jack had seen countless doctors over the years with no improvement.

Without a matching heart, he couldn't hold on much longer.

Aurora glanced at John's profile and asked, "Weren't you worried when I didn't come back last night?"

John looked at her tenderly and asked, "Am I such an unqualified boyfriend that I don't even have that bit of trust and confidence?"

Being unconditionally trusted felt really good.

Aurora smiled. She had no idea that she had spent the entire night sleeping in John's arms.

To Aurora, it felt like she and John had been apart for two days, but for John, it was only a few hours.

Years later, Aurora would understand just how terrifying it was to make John jealous.

Aurora remembered something and said, "By the way, the company I work for went bankrupt. Overnight, it changed owners, and now there's a new boss."

"Yeah, Ernest had too small a vision. It was only a matter of time before the company went under."

"But it was still quite surprising. I don't know why the Lewis Group suddenly acquired it," Aurora said, puzzled. "The company wasn't making money. Spending a lot to acquire it doesn't seem worth it."

"Lewis Group isn't short on money."

Aurora couldn't find any fault with that statement.

Aurora looked distressed. "But I probably won't last long at the company. This morning, I offended the new boss."

Hearing this, John felt confused.

The hospital was very close to the company, and they arrived shortly.

John comforted her, "Don't worry, just do your job well. Worst case, you don't work, and I'll take care of you."

John wasn't too keen on Aurora going out and being in the public eye; he wished she could stay by his side 24/7.

But he knew Aurora had her own ambitions.

He couldn't clip Aurora's wings, so he could only give her a sky to fly freely in.

Aurora clenched her fist, cheering herself on. "I won't give up that easily. We still need to buy a house. I can't let you work hard alone."

"Alright," John smiled. "I'll pick you up after work."

"Okay."

John watched Aurora enter the company, then picked up his phone and made a call. "I'm downstairs at your company. Come down now."

Lucas, who was napping in the lounge, received the call and was a bit confused.

Lucas shook off his reverie and returned to his senses. Seeing the caller ID, he quickly grabbed his clothes and walked out while putting them on.

Downstairs, Lucas didn't see anyone at the company entrance until he heard a car horn and incredulously walked towards the cheap car parked by the roadside.

"John, why are you driving this kind of car?"

John glanced at him indifferently. "Get in."

Lucas looked at the car. He had never sat in such a shabby, cheap car before.

After getting in, Lucas curiously asked, "John, where did this car come from?"

"Bought it from the used car market."

Lucas was puzzled.

When did the head of the Lewis family fall so low as to buy a used car?

John lit a cigarette and asked, "How was your first day at work?"

"Not bad." Lucas tried to stretch his legs, only to find the car too small to do so. "John, you didn't call me down here just to check on me, did you?"

In Lucas' impression, John wasn't such a considerate person.

John asked expressionlessly, "Did anything happen at the company today?"

"No, with my charm, winning those people over is a piece of cake," Lucas thought for a moment and added, "Nothing happened, but I did meet someone interesting."

Aurora's image flashed in Lucas' mind, and a smile crept onto his lips.

In the entertainment industry, Lucas had seen all kinds of beauties.

There were very few who could amaze him, and so far, only Aurora had piqued his interest.

Lucas had already planned to promote Aurora to be his assistant in the afternoon.

John's lips curled slightly and asked, "What's so interesting about her?"

"Her looks are beyond words. Anyone who catches my eye must be as beautiful as a fairy," Lucas said, "There are countless women who want to get into my bed, but this girl said I was not her type. I heard she had a boyfriend, but as long as I try hard enough, there's no wall I can't break down. I'll promote her to be my assistant this afternoon, and then I'll have the advantage."

As Lucas vividly described how he planned to win Aurora over, John casually said, "You want to steal my girl?"

"John, I wouldn't dare," Lucas's face looked like he had been struck by lightning as he realized.

Seeing John's cold eyes, Lucas shivered.

"John, you're that girl's boyfriend? You must be joking," Lucas forced a stiff smile.

John nonchalantly flicked the ash off his cigarette. "Aurora doesn't know my identity. Now that Wilson Group has become a subsidiary of Lewis Group, and subsidiaries have annual promotion assessments, I want Aurora transferred to the headquarters. You know what to do."

Lucas's mouth twitched. He suddenly realized why Wilson Group was acquired overnight.

"John, you acquired Wilson Group just for that girl?"

Lucas felt like he was still dreaming and hoped it was just a dream.

He had actually taken a liking to John's woman.

He had just started liking her and was already heartbroken.

Would he dare to steal John's girl?

The answer was definitely no.

John gave him a sharp look and coldly warned, "Watch your mouth."

John had come specifically to warn Lucas, showing how important this girl was to John. Lucas didn't dare have any more thoughts.

"I know what to do."

Lucas instantly deflated, forcing a bitter smile, and said, "John, for the first time, I'm jealous of you."
