Chapter 393 Reaching Out with Evil Claws
Summer perked up his ears to listen to the phone conversation.
On the other end of the line, someone said something that made Jack curse angrily, "A bunch of useless idiots, what am I paying you for..."
Before Jack could finish his sentence, he caught sight of Summer sneaking up behind a stone.
A sinister look flashed in Jack's eyes as he hung up the phone.
Summer, who was crawling forward, noticed the sudden silence. He looked up from under the grapevine trellis, but Jack was gone.
Summer quickly got up and walked briskly to the trellis, looking around but finding nothing.
He then walked to the pond, his face serious as he scanned the area.
The pond was deep, and in the dim night, Jack, hidden in the shadows, saw Summer standing by the pond and had a sudden thought.
Driven by a dark impulse, Jack quietly approached. Summer, completely unaware, focused on the sounds coming from the direction of the arched bridge.
Jack got closer and closer. Just as Summer was about to turn around after seeing nothing at the bridge, he caught a glimpse of a shadow slowly covering his own.
Summer tensed up immediately, fully aware that someone was behind him and sensing danger.
He didn't dare to turn around right away, his breathing lightened with tension. Using the faint light from afar, he saw a blurry reflection in the pond.
The reflection showed someone reaching out towards him.
"Summer? Jack?" Aurora's voice called out.
The hands in the reflection quickly withdrew.
Aurora approached, smiling as she saw Jack and Summer by the pond. "There you two are. Everyone's having a barbecue, what are you doing here?"
"Mommy." Summer quickly ran to Aurora's side.
Jack complained, "Aurora, I was just on the phone with Ewan's group. They set up a race and lost again, asking me to cover the costs. They're useless."
Jack's tone was filled with frustration.
"I told you to stop with those races, but you never listen," Aurora scolded. "Disband the team immediately, do you hear me?"
"Aurora, it's my only hobby," Jack tied to change the subject with a grin. "Summer, what were you looking for by the pond? I was just about to call you."
Jack glanced at the pond and muttered, "There's nothing here."
Summer stared at Jack without saying a word, just kept staring.
Could he have been overthinking it?
Summer had followed Jack to the backyard because he seemed sneaky. Jack's explanation was reasonable, and he hadn't heard anything suspicious.
Whether Jack was trying to push him or call him, Summer couldn't be sure.
Either way, he didn't like this uncle.
Jack noticed Summer's stare and joked, "Why are you looking at me like that? Do I have something on my face?"
Aurora also noticed Summer's odd look and called out, "Summer?"
Summer snapped out of it, "Mommy, I'm hungry. I'm going to get something to eat."
With that, he walked to the front yard.
Jack touched his face and teased, "Aurora, do I look that bad? This kid has given me the cold shoulder more than once. What did I do to offend him?"
"You should ask yourself," Aurora was puzzled. "Summer is usually very forgiving. What did you do to upset my son?"
"Aurora, I'm innocent," Jack wailed, linking arms with Aurora. "I think Summer and I just don't click. By the way, are you sending Summer and Loren off tomorrow?"
"Yes, they're leaving tomorrow afternoon."
Aurora noticed Jack's eager and excited expression and laughed, "Don't worry, John agreed. You're going too. I also told Lori, and shee’s coming as well."
Jack muttered, "Why did you invite her?"
Aurora gave Jack a sidelong glance, "Are you afraid of her?"
Jack complained, "She's always so fierce, scolding me like a child. She's not even a third as gentle as you."
"Your flattery is getting better," Aurora laughed. "By the way, what do you think of Calla?"
In the afternoon, Aurora noticed Calla being very enthusiastic towards Jack. They actually looked quite good together.
Jack was in his twenties, so it was normal for him to date.
"She's okay, but she talks too much. It's annoying," Jack replied, digging his ear. "Aurora, don't try to set me up. I'm not interested."
"You..."
"Alright, Aurora, I'm hungry too. Let's go get something to eat," Jack interrupted, pulling her towards the front yard.
Summer was sipping a drinkdrink. When he saw Aurora and Jack return together, he frowned. Todd teased, "Summer, why the long face? Your daddy isn't jealous, so why are you?"
"Todd, you should focus on winning Lori over and stop worrying about other things," Summer retorted before walking away.
Todd was stunned.
"You rude little boy."
Summer didn't go far, just moved a small stool to sit where he could keep an eye on Jack.
He wanted to watch Jack's every move.
"Summer, have some chicken wings. Daddy just grilled these," Loren spoke, bringing over a pair of wings.
Summer took one and ate while keeping an eye on Jack.
Loren squatted beside him, "Summer, why do you keep staring at Uncle? By the way, Daddy said we're going to the island tomorrow afternoon, and Uncle is coming too."
"He's coming too?" Summer immediately became alert.
"Yeah, Summer, what's wrong?" Loren asked, resting his chubby hands on his round cheeks. "I noticed you don't seem to like Uncle very much."
Jack glanced over, and Summer didn't look away. Their eyes met in the air.
"Loren, stay away from that uncle."
"Why?"
"Don't ask so many questions," Summer said, unable to explain. If he could, he would have told his parents directly.
He just knew that when Jack came over before, he looked at his brothers with a scary expression.
It was a look of disgust.
"Okay, I'll listen to you," Loren agreed, always obedient to Summer. "Summer, do you want some potatoes? I'll get you some."
"Sure, thanks!"
Loren ran off again.
Summer finished his chicken wing and threw the bone into a nearby trash can. When he turned around, he saw Jack approaching.
"Summer, I brought some potatoes. Want some?" Jack asked with a friendly smile.
Summer haughtily refused, "I hate potatoes."
Jack chuckled, "Summer, you seem to have a lot of hostility towards me. If I've done something to upset you, just let me know and I'll fix it."
Summer looked at Jack and suddenly smiled innocently, like a little gentleman. His cute demeanor could melt anyone's heart.
"Uncle, you're overthinking it."
Kids could change moods as quickly as the weather.
Jack was dazzled by Summer's smile, feeling like he couldn't figure him out.
Summer suddenly added, "By the way, Uncle Jack, I heard you're going to the Nightfall training base. Just so you know, the island is full of traps. Be careful."
