Chapter 269 Jack Was with Richard
Richard had busted out of prison, and it was a big deal.
Aurora's heart skipped a beat. "When did this happen?" she asked, her voice tight.
"An hour ago," John said, already grabbing his coat. "That's plenty of time for Richard to get out of Silvercrest City. Aurora, you go rest first. I need to head out for a bit."
"But it's so late. Where are you going?" Aurora's worry was clear. "This is police's responsibility. Don't go. I have a bad feeling about this."
"Don't worry, it's fine. Just go to sleep," John insisted, giving her a quick kiss on the forehead before leaving.
Aurora's gut told her John was definitely hiding something.
That night, she tossed and turned, unable to sleep. It was only when dawn started to break that she finally felt a bit sleepy.
In a half-asleep daze, she heard John come back. It sounded like he was on the phone with someone. Not long after, he pulled her into his arms, like he always did.
Aurora fell into a deep sleep again and woke up almost at noon. John had already left for the office.
She got up to have lunch and saw Jack heading out. "Jack," she called.
Jack didn't seem to hear her and kept walking.
Aurora called out a few more times before Jack finally turned around. "Aurora, did you call me?"
She walked over and asked, "Where are you going?"
"A friend asked me out. I'm going," Jack replied.
"Which friend?" Aurora pressed. Lately, Jack had been going out frequently, making her uneasy, especially with Richard on the loose.
"Just Dominic. He's going abroad and wanted to have a meal together. Aurora, I'll be back later. Don't worry."
Aurora didn't remember any Dominic but decided to trust Jack. "Be safe," she reminded him. Her belly was big, making it hard for her to go out.
"I will. Aurora, go back inside," Jack said, then headed to the garage, got in a car, and drove off. As soon as he left the villa, his phone rang with an unfamiliar number.
"Hello, who is this?" Jack answered.
A familiar voice on the other end said, "I'm waiting for you at the dock. You have half an hour."
It was Richard. Jack's expression turned tense. "Okay," he said softly.
Aurora had lunch and then decided to bask in the sun at home. With nothing to do in the afternoon, she got bored and asked Gideon to take her to the cemetery.
Alexander was cleaning in front of Wendy's grave again. With Alexander around, not even a single leaf was out of place.
"Why are you here with such a big belly?" Alexander asked with concern as he sat down on a stone slab.
"Richard escaped from prison. I'm really uneasy and came to see you. He hates you a lot. Plus, he was caught here, and I'm worried he might come back. It wouldn't be good if you ran into him," Aurora replied.
Alexander didn't react much to the news of Richard's escape, but thinking of how Richard had harmed Wendy, he got agitated.
"If he dares to come, I'll send him to hell to apologize to your mom," Alexander declared, his eyes burning with fierce hatred.
He had lost his beloved for life, all thanks to Richard. How could he not hate him?
"Seriously, you've faked your own death; it's not wise to make a big scene seeking revenge now. Just stay here and keep my mom company," Aurora said, rolling her eyes at Alexander. "I don't want to see you at the police station or the hospital next time."
If Alexander won, the police would take him; if he lost, the ambulance would. She didn't want to visit him at either of the place.
Alexander pouted, looking a bit unconvinced. "I've been around for so many years. Do you really think I got by for nothing?"
Aurora shot back, "Are you trying to make her restless even in her grave by saying such things in front of my mom's tomb?"
Alexander quickly wiped the tombstone with his sleeve, as if gently caressing his lover's face. "Wendy, just pretend you didn't hear that. You know, my temper was similar as yours. Don't be mad, just kidding."
Seeing Alexander's tender attitude toward Wendy, Aurora suddenly felt melancholic. If her mother were still alive and could be with her beloved, how wonderful that would be. She believed Alexander would have been a good husband.
Aurora sighed slightly, "I'm leaving."
Alexander asked, "Aurora, aren't you going to stay with your mom a bit longer?"
"You're here, that's enough," Aurora waved her hand and left.
Dean had been discharged from the hospital. Thinking she hadn't visited in a while, Aurora bought some things and went to the White villa.
When she arrived, she was surprised to see Dean doting on Nurse, cutting fruit for her and gifting her jewelry.
"You should try it on. This pearl necklace will look great on you," Dean urged.
Nurse refused, looking a bit uncomfortable. "Thanks but I can't accept it."
"I bought it for you, so wear it," Dean insisted, showing his assertiveness.
Aurora had been there for a while, leaning against the door, watching for quite some time. Dean hadn't noticed her, too busy talking to Nurse.
Finally, Nurse couldn't refuse Dean and put it on.
Dean took the opportunity to praise her. "It looks great, makes your complexion look much better."
Nurse blushed slightly. "Really?"
At this moment, Aurora coughed loudly, drawing their attention. Nurse quickly distanced herself from Dean, nervously removing the necklace and handing it back. "Mr. White, I'll go back to work."
Dean called out, "Nurse, don't go. This necklace is a gift for you."
But Nurse walked away briskly.
Dean, frustrated, slumped onto the sofa and glared at Aurora. "I think you did that on purpose. You just don't want me to be happy, do you? I finally got a bit closer to Nurse, and you messed it up."
Aurora rolled her eyes. "Dad, you used to chase after young girls, and now you won't even spare the people around you. That's a bit much, don't you think?"
She indeed did it on purpose. Men were all the same; they wouldn't cherish the things that were obtained effortless. She was deliberately making things difficult for Dean.
"Keep your voice down, don't let Nurse hear," Dean said, glancing around nervously and lowering his voice. "She's shy and doesn't handle jokes well. By the way, what are you doing here? You're pregnant; you should be taking it easy."
Aurora grinned. "I came to grab a bite. I miss Nurse's cooking. I'm gonna go find her."
With that, Aurora headed to the kitchen and called out, "Hey, Nurse, I'm craving your steak."
"Sure thing," Nurse replied with a warm smile. "We'll have steak tonight."
Dean, now wary, stood behind the door to eavesdrop but eventually gave up when he couldn't make out their whispers. Dinner smelled delicious, and Aurora felt her hunger grow.
"Dad, dinner's ready!" Aurora called. Just then, her phone rang. It was Jack.
Aurora thought of inviting Jack over for dinner, then answered. "Jack, I'm at the White villa. Nurse made steak. Come join us..."
Jack interrupted, "Aurora, I'm leaving with my dad."
Aurora's heart skipped a beat. She hurriedly asked, "Your dad? Where are you?"
Jack's biological father was Richard. Thinking of this, Aurora immediately panicked. She pressed, "Jack, are you with Richard? Is that right?"
