Chapter 438 Todd Struck by Lightning
The rain was coming down in sheets, making it hard to see. Aurora drove out of the city and onto the winding mountain road, but the slick ground forced her to slow down.
Lori had been kidnapped for over ten hours, and Aurora had no clue about Lori's current condition from what Jack had told her.
Ava and Todd also got the news and rushed to the cemetery.
Todd was only about ten miles away from the cemetery when he got the message.
He drove straight there, but halfway up the mountain, he hit road construction and had to ditch his car and run the rest of the way.
The cemetery was eerily quiet in the middle of the night, with the heavy rain pouring down. Who would come to a cemetery at this hour?
Yet, beside Richard's tombstone, two men were digging a grave, and they had already dug a large pit.
The two men wore black raincoats and held shovels, digging one scoop after another.
On the ground lay a person—it was Lori.
Lori was unconscious, her body drenched by the rain.
One of the men, slightly chubby, said, "This should be enough. The pit is big enough to bury her."
The other man, with a centipede tattoo on his arm, measured the pit with his hand and said, "Looks about right. Let's throw her in and bury her."
"This cemetery is creepy, especially with this heavy rain. I want to get this done and leave."
They placed their shovels aside and went to lift Lori.
The chubby man lamented, "Such a beautiful woman, being buried alive. What a pity."
The tattooed man replied, "You better not let the boss hear you say that. This is the boss's own sister. If he can bury her alive, what do you think he'll do to us if we fail?"
"I'm just saying. As long as you don't tell, the boss won't know." The chubby man said, "Let's hurry and bury her before the caretaker notices."
"Stop talking and get to work."
They started shoveling dirt over Lori, covering half of her body.
When Todd arrived, he saw Lori being buried by the two men. He immediately assumed Lori was dead. A flash of lightning struck, making him freeze for a few seconds.
"Lori!"
Todd charged forward like a madman.
The chubby man and the tattooed man saw him coming and swung their shovels at Todd.
"Let's bury them both."
Todd wasn't skilled in close combat, but at that moment, he felt a surge of strength. He swung his fists at them.
"How dare you hurt my woman! I'll fight you to the death!"
Todd fought recklessly, not backing down even though he was outnumbered.
He tackled the chubby man, pinning him down and punching him repeatedly. The chubby man struggled and threw Todd off.
The chubby man punched Todd in the face, making his head snap to the side.
"Pathetic. Trying to be a hero? Since you're here, I'll bury you both together."
The chubby man tried to strangle Todd.
Todd couldn't breathe, his legs kicking, his hands desperately trying to pry the chubby man's hands off.
Seeing the chubby man handling Todd alone, the tattooed man stood by, not helping.
Todd's eyes rolled back, his face turning red, veins bulging on his forehead and neck.
In desperation, Todd grabbed some dirt and threw it into the chubby man's eyes.
The chubby man was blinded, giving Todd a chance to kick him away and quickly get up.
The tattooed man helped the chubby man up, rubbing his eyes.
They exchanged a fierce look and attacked Todd with their shovels.
Todd dodged, but his foot slipped, and he fell into the pit, landing on Lori.
Lori woke up with a painful cry.
Hearing her voice, Todd was overjoyed. "Lori, Lori, you're alive! I thought you were dead."
"You almost killed me by falling on me."
Lori opened her eyes, the rain making it hard to see. She quickly sat up and realized she was beside Richard's grave, covered in dirt. They were trying to bury her alive.
"Do they think I'm easy to bully?" Lori was furious. "Help me up."
Todd quickly helped her up, but Lori found she couldn't stand, her body weak and limp. She leaned against Todd.
Lori remembered being injected with something before she passed out. "What did you inject me with? Who are you people?"
Standing at the edge of the pit, the chubby man and the tattooed man looked down at them, holding their shovels. The tattooed man sneered, "Ms. Hernandez, don't blame us in hell. The boss ordered this. Traitors deserve punishment."
Lori cursed, "Is it Jack, that bastard? He has the guts to bury his own sister alive."
Todd was shocked. "You mean Jack?"
Burying his own sister beside Richard's grave—how insane was that?
Lori leaned against Todd to stand. "Who else could it be? I'm too weak to fight them. It's up to you now."
Todd held Lori's hand firmly. "Even if I die, I won't leave you. We'll die together."
Lori was silent.
"I want to live," Lori glared at Todd. "You can't die either. They're just small fry. Don't you have any confidence?"
Todd showed Lori his injuries. "I can't even beat small fry. I came in a hurry and didn't bring backup."
"Useless."
Lori wanted to complain, but seeing Todd's battered yet determined look, she swallowed her words.
Todd had known Lori long enough to guess what she was thinking.
As a man, not being able to protect his woman was indeed pathetic.
Todd's expression hardened. "I'll hold them off. You go. John and Ava should be here soon."
Todd lifted Lori out of the pit and jumped out himself. "Come at me."
Todd's determination was palpable.
The chubby man attacked first, hitting Todd's back with a shovel. Before he could steady himself, the tattooed man struck again.
Lori covered her face, unable to watch the brutal scene.
Todd, enraged, charged at the tattooed man, tackling him into the pit.
The chubby man tried to help, but Lori, using all her strength, grabbed his shoulder and threw him down, elbowing him hard.
Normally, Lori's throw would have made the chubby man cough up blood and unable to get up, but he was tough and quickly got up to fight Lori.
In the pit, Todd and the tattooed man wrestled, choking and punching each other, both trying to grab the shovel.
The tattooed man got the shovel first, but Todd refused to give up, reaching for it. Both held the shovel when a lightning bolt struck, hitting the shovel and electrocuting them both.
Aurora, John, and Ava arrived just in time to see the lightning strike Todd.
"Todd!" Lori kicked the chubby man away and shouted at Todd.
The sky lit up, and Todd and the tattooed man convulsed before collapsing.
