Chapter 66 John's Identity Is About to Be Exposed
Aurora pressed her face against John's.
His face was so cold, and so still.
It was covered in rainwater and blood.
Aurora held John tightly, murmuring. "I'll keep you warm."
She gently rubbed her face against his, the strong smell of blood engulfing her senses. A tear slid from the corner of her eye, falling onto John's face.
The sky was dark, and the rain kept falling.
Every minute and second of the journey to the hospital felt like torture to Aurora.
Aurora contacted Todd again, informing him that John had been taken to a nearby hospital.
When they arrived, the doctor came out with a stretcher, quickly placing John on it. The white sheets quickly turned red with John's blood.
The doctor glanced at John's wound, his expression turning grave. "Quick, prep the operating room."
Aurora's legs were numb and injured, but she still ran alongside the gurney, watching as John was wheeled into the operating room.
The moment the operating room doors closed, she felt her heart sink.
"Doctor, you have to save John. Please, save him," Aurora pleaded with her hands clasped together.
The doctor said, "Don't worry, we'll do our best."
The doctor went inside, leaving Aurora alone in the hallway. Sheleaned against the cold wall, her whole body still trembling uncontrollably.
Her legs were weak and she relied on the wall for support.
She couldn't imagine what she would do if John died.
She didn't dare to think about it.
Her phone rang again; this time, it was Sophia calling.
Aurora answered with trembling hands, her voice still filled with unbridled fear.
Sophia sensed something was wrong and asked, "Aurora, what's wrong? I've already picked Loren up. When are you coming back? Let me tell you, this kid is really too clever. Just being with him makes me feel dumb. Where did you find such a smart child?"
At the banquet that day, when Sophia learned that Aurora was being slandered, Loren was taken away by theRobinson family's servant, and she hadn't seen Loren since.
"Sophia is just too dumb. Sis, when are you coming back? I really miss you."
Hearing Loren's voice, Aurora couldn't help but cry.
Aurora told Sophia, "I can't come back for now. Please take care of Loren for me."
"Aurora, what's wrong?" Sophia asked urgently. "What happened? Where are you now?"
Aurora replied, "I'm at the hospital."
Not long after she hungup on Sophia, the doctor found Aurora. "The patient has lost too much blood, and the wound on his thigh is very close to a major artery. It's extremely dangerous. The bleeding won't stop. To save his life, we might have to amputate. I'm letting you know to prepare you for the worst case scenario."
"Amputate?"
To Aurora, this was undoubtedly a bolt from the blue.
The doctor asked Aurora to sign the consent form, but her hands were trembling too much to do so.
Aurora said, "Doctor, you have to save his leg. Save his leg and his life. I'm begging you."
She couldn't sign it. She couldn't let John lose his leg.
It was too difficult to choose between his leg and his life.
"The patient's condition is very critical. You brought him in too late. He's already lost a third of his blood. This is very dangerous. Please prepare for the worst," the doctor said, "Given the current medical conditions, if necessary, we must amputate the leg to save his life."
"Who dares to touch the boss's leg?"
Todd rushed in, not expecting John's condition to be more critical than he had imagined, considering that the doctor was talking aboutamputation.
John was only pretending to be lame; if he had his leg amputated, he would be truly disabled.
John's pride would never reconcile with a crippled version of himself.
Following closely behind Todd were Sam and Tyler.
"Mr. Smith," Aurora saw Todd and felt a bit more at ease. "Please save him. He can't die, and his leg must be saved."
"Don't worry," Todd said, then turned to the doctor. "Transfer him to another hospital immediately."
The doctor quickly said, "It's not advisableto transfer him now. If you insist on transferring, we won't be held liable for whatever happens to him."
"Don't worry, we'll take full responsibility," Todd said. He then turned to Sam and Tyler. "Get the boss into the car immediately."
If the hospital couldn't do it, they could only take him to Nightfall's headquarters.
"Yes, Mr. Smith."
Sam and Tyler followed Todd's orders.
Todd was the second-in-command at Nightfall. With John in trouble, Todd had the authority to make any decision.
Aurora hesitated when she heard the doctor say John would be in danger. "Mr. Smith."
Todd said, "John's family has decided on this."
John was quickly put in the car. A row of cars was parked at the hospital entrance, making for a grand scene.
Aurora wanted to go with them; she was worried.
"Miss White, you don't need to come," Todd stopped her and said. "John's family is in the car."
Mr. Lewis and Helen were there, and they were heading to Nightfall's headquarters, which wasn't something that Aurora should be made privy to.
"Which hospital are you taking him to?" Aurora looked inside the car but could only see Helen.
"Miss White, please. We can't delay this any longer."
Aurora understood he didn't want to tell her.
With John's family there, what was she worried about?
She wasn't anyone to John, so what right did she have to go?
"Mr. Smith, if you really have to make a choice, choose to save his life. He can't die."
"Got it."
Todd didn't waste words and got in the car.
The car started and sped away.
Aurora stood at the hospital entrance, watching until the car was out of sight.
"Aurora, my God, why are you covered in blood? Where are you hurt? Let me see."
Sophia saw Aurora standing at the entrance as soon as she got out of the car.
Aurora's clothes were soaked with rain and blood. It was a worrisome sight.
Loren also came along. Seeing Aurora covered in blood, he cried. "Sis, you're hurt. You're bleeding a lot. Pleasedon't die."
In a child's mind, bleeding could mean death, and Aurora was covered in blood.
Aurora comforted him, "Loren, don't cry. I'm fine. This isn't my blood."
Most of the blood on Aurora was John's.
Sophia said with concern, "You have wounds on your forehead and hands. How can you say you're fine? Let's go inside and have the doctor check on you."
Aurora had been entirely focused on John's safety and had not caredabout her own injuries.
But even minor injuries were still injuries.
Sophia couldn't let Aurora ignore herself, and with Loren crying, Aurora finally agreed to go inside for a check-up.
Aurora had a head injury with a brief loss of consciousness and was diagnosed with a mild concussion.
Sophia insisted Aurora stay in the hospital for observation and recovery.
With Sophia and Loren watching over her, Aurora had no choice but to stay.
That night, Aurora was constantly worried about John's condition, texting Todd every half hour for updates.
Every message went unanswered.
The more this happened, the more anxious Aurora became.
She didn't know which hospital in Silvercrest City John was in, or why John's family wouldn't let her go with them.
Aurora recalled the grand scene at the hospital entrance when they picked John up. John was just a rideshare driver; even if his family had some money, it shouldn't have been such a big scene.
She initially thought they were Todd's people, but now she realized Todd had said they were John's family.
Aurora had seen Sam before. Wasn't Sam the bodyguard of Mr. Lewis, the head of the Lewis family?
At that time, she was worried about John's condition and didn't think about it.
Now she wondered, 'Why would Sam come with Todd?'
John, Sam, and the Lewis family.
Aurora suddenly realized something that left her shocked and incredulous.
