Chapter 169 Don't Indulge in Desires Too Much
Todd was all over the place with his wild gestures and over-the-top expressions.
Jennifer looked bummed out. "Todd, I'm not dead. If you don't believe me, just touch me and see for yourself."
Todd shot a look at John. "Can I touch her?"
He looked serious, but his words sounded somewhat suggestive, leaving John speechless.
Jennifer felt the awkwardness and added with a smile, "Just touch my hand."
"You scared me. I thought you meant..." Todd laughed awkwardly and reached out to touch Jennifer's hand. "It's warm, she's alive."
Mystery solved.
Todd knew Jennifer was alive; he had said those things earlier just to lighten the mood.
Right then, Aurora’s voice came from the room, "John, where are my clothes?"
The room went dead silent.
Todd looked at John, then at Jennifer, and said with a hint of sympathy, "Boss, I’m gonna go find Lori. Take care."
And with that, Todd bolted. Sticking around would only get him caught in the drama. Better safe than sorry.
Once Todd left, John turned to Jennifer, "If you need anything, go find Evelyn."
"Okay." Jennifer smiled, "Go in quickly, or Ms. White will be upset."
What a considerate girl.
John went in, and there was Aurora, standing by the bed, rummaging through clothes. Her favorite nightgown was missing.
"Where's my purple nightgown?"
"Maybe Evelyn took it to wash." John honestly couldn’t remember which nightgown it was.
Aurora rolled her eyes at him. "I heard Todd’s voice just now. Were you almost assassinated again? When did that happen?"
"At the Villa Kitchen entrance. You were there just now."
"Just now? Did that really happen?" Aurora scratched her head and laughed awkwardly, "I blacked out, but since you're unharmed, they must’ve failed."
This was John’s life. Assassination attempts were just another Tuesday, and while Aurora worried, it was John’s choice.
Aurora patted John’s shoulder. "No matter what happens or where it happens, just come back alive. You have to come back alive."
She wouldn’t stop or interfere with John’s choices, but he had to stay alive.
John had faced so many assassination attempts that Aurora had built up a thick skin and wasn’t easily shocked anymore.
With a smile, he stretched out his long arm and pulled Aurora into a hug. "Aurora, you’re so good to me. How did I get so lucky to find such a gem?"
Aurora totally got him. Even though she could be a bit spoiled, she never wavered on the important stuff.
"Stop buttering me up." Aurora said playfully, "If you ever don’t come back, I’ll never forgive you."
"Alright, no matter what danger I face, I’ll always come back alive." John held Aurora’s waist and said, "Aurora, Summer’s been off the island long enough. He should come back."
Aurora was Summer’s mom, so John naturally had to get her take on it.
Aurora sighed and rolled her eyes at John. "I haven’t even settled the score with you for taking my son to the island."
"That’s not fair. It was Randy who did that." John quickly distanced himself from the blame and reasoned, "Aurora, Summer’s got talent. Our line of work isn’t that dangerous."
Aurora glared at him. "You get assassinated every other day, and you say it’s not dangerous?"
John had no comeback for that.
"Aurora, Summer can learn a lot on the island. It’ll be great for his future. When he grows up, he doesn’t have to choose this path. Just think of it as him going to school."
John made a good point.
Aurora knew Summer’s ambitions and his talents.
"I can’t make this decision. It’s up to Summer himself."
"Alright." John decided to push his luck. "So, Summer will go to the island alone, and Loren will be lonely by himself too."
"Hold up." Aurora sensed something fishy and said with a fake smile, "I only have two sons. If you take both to the island, I won't let you off the hook. Also, I haven't asked you about Jennifer yet. How did she come back alive?"
Aurora sat on the edge of the bed, crossing her long, fair legs and folding her arms, speaking in an interrogative tone.
John chuckled and got straight to it, "Five years ago, actually six now, Wade set me up while enemies came after me. Back then, Nightfall wasn't as powerful. Todd was sent to the eastern region, Sam and Tyler..."
Aurora cut him off. "Get to the point."
"Alright." John said, "The point is, the Shadow of Darkness organization took advantage of the chaos. Jennifer diverted the enemies for me and got captured. When I went to find her later, all I found was a shoe and a lot of blood. The Shadow of Darkness's car was burned to a shell, and Jennifer disappeared. We all thought she was dead. Today, she told me she was saved and taken abroad."
Aurora listened carefully. Jennifer had told John that the person who saved her wouldn't let her leave, and she only recently found a chance to escape.
"John, do you believe her? Six years and she never found a chance?"
There were too many holes in that story.
John smiled, "Aurora, I don't care what she did these past years. As long as she's alive and back, that's all that matters."
Aurora got it. Jennifer's situation back then was because of John. He had always felt guilty. Now that she was back, he didn't have to carry that heavy guilt anymore.
As for what Jennifer did all these years and where she went after disappearing, John didn't care.
Aurora nodded and stood up. "I'm going to take a shower. I smell like alcohol, it's awful."
"Let's go together."
John followed, but after a few steps, Aurora turned back to get her clothes. They bumped into each other, forehead to forehead.
"John, you hurt me." Aurora was angry, her voice loud.
Jennifer was standing at the door with hangover medicine, just in time to hear that, and her face turned extremely ugly.
"I'll be gentler. Don't move." That was John's voice.
"It hurts, really hurts."
"Bear with it a little longer, it'll be over soon." John comforted.
"You're going too deep, pull it out a bit."
Jennifer's face turned red, and an indescribable scene seemed to appear in front of her.
Her hand holding the hangover medicine tightened, making her knuckles turn white.
Jennifer took several deep breaths, but her heart was still racing with anger.
Just as she raised her hand to knock on the door, everything went black, and she fainted.
Inside, Aurora and John heard the commotion and looked at each other.
Aurora said, "Go see what's going on."
John put down the alcohol swab and walked out quickly.
Aurora's forehead was red and slightly swollen. John had been using a cotton swab dipped in alcohol to reduce the swelling.
He opened the door to find Jennifer lying on the floor.
Aurora came out too, "What happened to her?"
Gary happened to be coming back from outside and was just upstairs. John saw him and called out, "Gary, come check on Jennifer."
Gary walked over and was surprised to see Jennifer's face. "Am I seeing things?"
Could he be mistaken? Wasn't this Jennifer who had been dead for years?
"Check on Jennifer first." John said, "Jennifer had a heart transplant."
That was what Jennifer had said.
Gary said, "No rush, let me take a look first."
Gary examined Jennifer and said, "Nothing serious, she'll be fine when she wakes up."
Aurora asked, "Why did Jennifer suddenly faint?"
"Overwhelmed with anger." Gary said with a smile, "In simple terms, she fainted from rage."
