Chapter 399 Going Against the Grain

The night was dark and windy.

Todd's room was pitch black, with the window open.

Lori crouched beneath the window, her body hunched. She deliberately messed up her hair, making it look like a bird's nest, and used it to cover her face.

Todd lay on the bed, completely still despite Lori's attempts to mimic a cat and a wolf.

Spotting a rock in the corner, Lori grinned mischievously, picked it up, and weighed it in her hand before aiming and throwing it at the bed.

The noise startled Todd, who sat up abruptly. "What the heck was that? Thunder?"

Lori quickly hid beneath the window.

Todd looked outside, confused. The night was pitch black, but his eyes had adjusted enough to see the waves crashing and the sea breeze blowing in, refreshing him.

"Nothing to worry about, back to sleep," he muttered to himself, lying back down. Just as he was about to drift off, a cat's meow sounded from outside.

"Where did a stray cat come from on this island?" Todd muttered as he got out of bed and walked to the window. "This season... um, it must be mating season for cats."

Lori, hearing this, thought to herself, 'You're the stray cat.'

She listened to his footsteps, timing her move. As Todd approached the window, she stood up slowly, hands raised, and said, "Give me back my life! I died unjustly! I'm going to strangle you!"

Lori had worn a white dress and let her hair down, making her look like a ghost in the dead of night.

"A ghost! A female ghost!" Todd screamed, running around the room in a panic.

Lori stifled her laughter and climbed through the window, continuing her ghostly act. "Let me strangle you! Only then can I go to heaven!"

Todd ran around the room, and Lori chased him, blocking his path and scaring him. "I'm going to strangle you! Stop running!"

"Mommy! A ghost!" Todd screamed, running again.

Next door, Aurora heard the commotion, half-asleep. "Honey, I think I hear a scream."

"Just go back to sleep. Those two idiots are playing games," John said, putting down his iPad. He had already checked the security footage and saw Lori climbing through the window in a white dress, followed by Todd's screams. He knew what was happening.

"Okay," Aurora mumbled, turning over and falling back asleep.

Todd, exhausted from running, collapsed on the bed, eyes closed, ready to surrender. "Come on, ghost lady. I've been with women and men, but never a ghost. This should be interesting."

"I'm going to strangle you! Come to hell with me!" Lori leaned in to scare him, but Todd suddenly flipped over, pinning her down and restraining her hands above her head.

"I'm going to make love to a ghost!" Todd said, biting Lori's neck.

"Ouch!" Lori yelped, dropping the act. "String Bean, let go of me!"

Lori struggled, shaking her head to blow the hair off her face, revealing herself.

"It's you?" Todd exclaimed. "I thought you were a real ghost!"

"You coward! You got scared so easily!"

"Yeah, I'm terrified. My heart is pounding," Todd said, clutching his chest and pretending to be scared. "You're so mean, dressing up as a ghost to scare me. Climbing through my window in the middle of the night, dressed like that. Are you trying to seduce me?"

"Dream on," Lori said, pushing Todd away.

In the dim light, Todd smirked and jumped back, keeping his distance. "Don't come near me. I'm telling you, this time I'm defending my honor."

"Honor? You just said you've been with men. Who was it? Someone from Nightfall?" Lori demanded.

Todd avoided the question.

"Fine, Todd. If you cheated on me, I'll break your legs."

"Lori," Todd said seriously, standing ten feet away. "Lori, let's end this. We're not right for each other. I won't hold you responsible. Let's just let the past go."

Lori, who had been avoiding Todd's advances, suddenly felt a pang of emptiness. It was like losing something precious.

"String Bean, I..."

Todd clasped his hands together, pleading. "We're not right for each other. Forcing it won't make us happy. Look at us, always fighting."

Lori frowned, feeling a sense of loss. "I..."

Todd interrupted. "I know you feel guilty for taking my innocence. But it's okay. As a man, I should be forgiving."

"You..."

"I'm really fine," Todd interrupted again. "I'll find someone who doesn't mind that I've lost my innocence. Don't feel bad. If you really feel guilty, you can compensate me financially."

Lori was silent.

Looking at Todd, who seemed desperate for freedom, Lori felt guilty. "Don't worry, I won't let you suffer. How much do you want? I'll transfer it now."

"Just give what you think is fair," Todd said, almost crying. "Whatever you think my innocence is worth."

Lori leaned in, staring into Todd's eyes. "Do you even have innocence? Whether you do or not, I don't have a conscience."

Todd was silent.

"One hundred dollars, no more," Lori said, pulling out a hundred-dollar bill. "Take it."

Todd looked at it, eyes wide. "Fake money? Are you kidding me? Can this even be used?"

"Of course it can. Just find a place where they don't recognize fake money."

Todd clenched his fist. "You're ruthless."

Lori smiled. "String Bean, goodnight."

She climbed back out the window.

As Lori headed back to her room, she heard something unusual.

There was movement on the sea.
