Chapter 404 Lori is Captured
John quickly told Aurora and the others to head back to their rooms and stay put.
"Todd, go check if there are any other issues around."
"Got it, John."
Lori chimed in, "John, do you need us to help out?"
She and Ava felt bad about just hanging around and wanted to pitch in.
"Alright, you two can go with Todd to Mistveil Forest." John gave Todd a knowing look.
Aurora, hearing about Mistveil Forest, anxiously asked, "John, isn't that place dangerous? Will Ava and Lori be safe?"
Todd reassured her, "Aurora, Mistveil Forest isn't dangerous. It's Nightfall's main training base, and it holds a lot of important stuff."
The danger was just a ruse to keep people away.
Letting Ava and Lori into such a crucial place showed John's trust in them.
Lori was touched, "Come on, String Bean, let's get moving. Quit dragging your feet."
The three of them headed to Mistveil Forest.
Aurora took the kids back to their room.
John and Sam walked to the information room.
Sam said, "Mr. Lewis, I've had Jenny keeping an eye on Jack. He hasn't left his room. If the map was stolen, could there be a mole?"
John hadn't dug deeper into the fake wedding incident to find Sandra's accomplice, but Jack had always been a suspect.
Out of consideration for Aurora, John had let it slide.
When Jack insisted on coming to the island, John stayed cautious.
The information room was buzzing. When the map was stolen, only one person was on duty. Everyone immediately returned to their posts to check things out.
Sam asked, "Mr. Lewis, if the map is lost, do we need to adjust the island's defense mechanisms?"
"No need. The stolen map was a fake." John said calmly, "I moved the real map a while ago. First, find out who messed with the surveillance."
When the fake map was stolen, the island's surveillance system was down for three minutes.
Three minutes was plenty of time to get things done.
...
Aurora left Summer and Loren in the room to watch Trey and Jax, then went to Jack's room.
Jack was lying on the bed, reading a magazine.
"Aurora, it's late. Why are you here? I heard an alarm earlier. Did something happen?" Jack said, "Without a guide, I didn't dare to wander around and see what was going on."
"Nothing major. How are you feeling? It's late, you should rest."
"I can't sleep. My chest feels tight." Jack rubbed his chest, "Aurora, I noticed someone watching me. It's Jenny, the one John assigned. She treats me like a thief. I couldn't even go out for some fresh air."
"That's not true. Jenny is probably just concerned about your health." Aurora said, "Don't overthink it. You're my brother. Who would guard against you? If you have a clear conscience, it doesn't matter what others think."
Jack smiled bitterly, "Aurora, Summer doesn't like me, and now someone is watching me. I'm not stupid. I can figure out what's going on. I spent some time with Richard, and he's my biological father. Do you all think I've turned bad because of him? Or that I want revenge on John for sending Richard to prison?"
"Jack, who put these ideas in your head? John and I never thought that." Aurora frowned, "You're overthinking."
Jack put down the magazine and laughed self-deprecatingly, "Lori can come and go freely on the island, but I can't. Everywhere I go, someone follows. When the alarm went off, Sam came to my room first. It's obvious they suspect me."
Aurora was at a loss for words.
"Get some rest. Tonight might be a bit chaotic. Stay in your room and don't go anywhere. No one will harm you."
"Aurora, do you suspect me, too?" Jack asked seriously.
"You're my cousin. How could I suspect you?" Aurora smiled, "Alright, stop overthinking."
...
Mistveil Forest.
The sky was dark, and the forest was pitch black. They had to feel their way through.
Todd led the way with a flashlight. After about half an hour, they finally saw some lights.
It was a large training ground with all kinds of equipment.
Lori was impressed, "This equipment is top-notch. Even the military might not have this. John must be loaded."
"This is just the tip of the iceberg. Nightfall's real value is in its people, not the equipment." Todd continued leading them, "The world's top scientists are on this island. They are Nightfall's true treasures."
Ava said, "This place is a goldmine."
Scientists could create valuable inventions, making them priceless.
Lori asked, "Is this what you meant by the most important things?"
"Yes." Todd stopped at a large door, "I'll go in first. You two wait here."
Lori asked, "Why the secrecy? What kind of shady research are you doing in there?"
Todd laughed, "Scientists can be eccentric and don't like strangers. I'll check first."
Todd went inside, leaving Ava and Lori waiting. After a while, Lori noticed people in the forest.
Suddenly, someone emerged from the forest, saw Ava and Lori, and quickly ran back into the woods.
Lori and Ava exchanged glances. "People from Nightfall?"
Ava replied, "Doesn't look like it. More like Ironclad Union."
"Ironclad Union? How did they get on the island?" Lori said, "You stay here. I'll check it out."
"Lori, don't go. It might be a trap." Ava said, "Notify Todd first."
"You notify him. I'll chase them."
Ava couldn't stop Lori, who ran after the person.
Lori wasn't foolish. She knew it might be a trap. With Ava there, Todd would be fine. She wanted to confirm if they were former Wolfpack members.
Lori grew up in Wolfpack and didn't want to see them clash with Nightfall.
Ava understood Lori's thoughts.
Lori chased the person out of the forest to the beach. The sea was calm, but the person had vanished.
Lori searched around. Just as she was about to head back, someone attacked her from behind.
Lori dodged swiftly. Four people, camouflaged with grass and wearing masks, emerged. They were well-hidden.
"Are you former Wolfpack members?" Lori's eyes were cold, "Go back where you came from. I don't want to see you lose your lives here."
The four exchanged glances. One said, "Wolfpack is now led by Black Hawk. Lori, Mr. Lee treated you well. He was your father, yet you side with his killers, Nightfall. You're a traitor. Traitors deserve no mercy."
Few knew Lori was Richard's daughter. Even fewer in the Wolfpack knew.
The four attacked Lori. They were highly skilled.
Lori was surprised. Wolfpack's combat skills had never been this high.
One against four.
Lori struggled but fought with all her might.
She grabbed one by the shoulder, flipped over, and kicked another.
She took down two.
Suddenly, someone shouted, "Lori, stop, or we'll kill him."
In the dim light, Lori saw someone wearing Todd's clothes being held.
"String Bean." Lori panicked, "Touch him, and you'll regret it."
Rushing to save Todd, Lori's arm was grabbed. Before she could react, a needle pricked her neck, injecting something. Lori lost consciousness.
