Chapter 394 Going to Nightfall
Summer's warning was delivered in the most innocent and harmless tone, yet it was impossible to ignore.
Summer finished speaking and walked past Jack towards the group.
Jack turned around, watching Summer's small figure, a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. He took a bite of the potato in his hand and said, "Interesting."
Everyone was gathered around the barbecue.
John was being pulled into drinking by several elders. Each of them poured him a glass, and he had to drink three rounds. After a few rounds, he was already showing signs of intoxication.
Aurora felt sorry for him. "You guys are almost two hundred years old combined, and you're bullying my husband. Aren't you ashamed?"
Alexander joked, "Look at this, she's defending him. We only have one son-in-law among us. If he doesn't drink with us, who will? Aurora, why don't you find a few more sons-in-law for us?"
Kevin didn't have a daughter, just an adopted daughter, Aurora.
Emily was now Percy's daughter and no longer acknowledged Dean, leaving Dean with only Aurora.
Alexander had lost two daughters, leaving him with only Aurora.
Among everyone, Aurora was the only daughter, and John was the only son-in-law.
As soon as Alexander finished speaking, Wendy slapped him on the back of his head. "I think you've had too much to drink. What nonsense are you talking about?"
What kind of father encouraged his daughter to find more sons-in-law, especially in front of the current son-in-law?
Wasn't that just stirring up trouble between them?
John frowned, clearly displeased, but Alexander was his father-in-law, so he couldn't say anything.
The atmosphere suddenly became tense and awkward.
Realizing his mistake, Alexander grabbed a bottle of wine and walked over to John, putting his arm around John's shoulder. "John, I've had too much to drink and said something stupid. Don't take it to heart. But you know, our bond is really deep. Look, all three of my daughters liked you. You were destined to be my son-in-law."
His last words were somewhat teasing.
Mentioning Sandra and Jennifer only made the atmosphere more awkward.
"Alexander, I think you've had a bit too much to drink and are letting loose..."
Aurora didn't finish her sentence as John signaled her to stay quiet and let Alexander continue.
Alcohol could make people speak without restraint, and this was Alexander's way of venting his true feelings.
Everyone paused to listen to Alexander.
Tears welled up in Alexander's eyes. Losing two daughters was a heavy burden for any father.
If John hadn't married Aurora, Alexander wouldn't be sitting here drinking with him.
Alexander wiped his face, looked up at the sky, and laughed bitterly. "Come on, everyone, drink. Today is a good day. My two daughters may be gone, but my arch-enemy Richard was executed this morning. That's great news. Wendy and I have been separated for so many years, and all the tragedies we've faced are thanks to that bastard Richard. He's dead now, and it's good riddance."
Alexander laughed heartily, taking several swigs from his bottle. The others didn't drink, understanding that Alexander was deeply troubled and needed to vent.
Mentioning Richard brought varied expressions to everyone's faces. Jack watched Alexander laugh so freely, clenching his fists secretly.
Seeing that no one else was drinking, Alexander walked over to Samuel. "What, you're not drinking either? Samuel, I haven't settled the score with you yet. You took my woman abroad without a word and hid her for over ten years. What were you thinking?"
"I think you've really had too much to drink." Wendy took the bottle from Alexander and helped him up. "Come on, let's go inside and sober up."
Wendy led Alexander away, and Samuel put down his glass. "I'll go check on him. You all continue eating."
Alexander's drunken outburst dampened everyone's spirits.
John was also quite drunk, and Aurora planned to take him back to their room. Summer said, "Mom, I'll take Dad back to the room."
As the hosts, they couldn't all leave.
"Alright."
Aurora handed John over to Summer.
John wasn't too drunk, just a bit unsteady. Summer only needed to hold his hand.
Back in the room, John had a headache and rubbed his forehead.
"Dad, you should lie down." Summer helped John take off his shoes and went to get some water.
John leaned against the headboard, took the water cup, and drank. After a moment, he said, "Summer, go downstairs and eat something. I'll rest for a bit."
Summer stood by the bed, hesitating. "Dad, are you really planning to take Uncle to the island? That's Nightfall's core headquarters. Uncle is Richard's son, and Richard was the leader of Wolfpack. Wolfpack and Nightfall have always been at odds."
John's eyes lit up with surprise. Summer was not even six years old yet, but she was already so thoughtful.
John smiled and patted Summer's shoulder, saying meaningfully, "Summer, it looks like I can retire a few years earlier than expected."
Summer was puzzled. "Dad."
"Go on, I'll rest for a bit. Go keep your grandpa company. You and your brother won't be able to come back for a while."
With that, John lay down and closed his eyes to rest.
Summer didn't say anything more and quietly left the room.
Ashley and Kevin knew Summer and Loren were leaving and were particularly reluctant. They spent the whole evening talking and chatting with them.
Aurora and Sophia were in charge of the barbecue, with Leo assisting Sophia.
Calla saw Jack sitting alone in the corner, drinking, and brought him some barbecue. "What's the point of drinking alone? Want some company?"
"Go away." Jack rejected her outright, showing no sympathy.
Calla's eyes welled up with tears, her face burning with embarrassment. It was a harsh blow to her self-esteem.
Calla swallowed her tears and quietly walked away with the barbecue.
Everything was so quiet that no one noticed.
The barbecue gathering lasted until ten at night before everyone dispersed, feeling somewhat satisfied.
The next day.
Aurora had packed everything early, bringing Trey and Jax along. She couldn't leave them at home, feeling uneasy.
Once everything was ready, they set off at three in the afternoon.
John arranged for a helicopter, and Todd decided to go back to the island to check things out. Gary naturally went along too.
This was Aurora's first time going to the island, and she was excited and curious about what Nightfall's training base would be like.
Two hours later, the helicopter was flying throughout the ocean. John said, "We're here."
Aurora was puzzled and looked down. "Where?"
All she saw was water, no island in sight.
It couldn't be underwater, could it?
Jack also looked out the window, seeing nothing but endless water.
John explained, "The island has a natural barrier. From a certain height, it looks like a stretch of ocean. Only when you get closer can you see it's an island."
Todd proudly added, "We've reinforced the barrier, using magnetic fields for interference. Even radar systems can't detect the island's presence. Any ships approaching the island will have their navigation systems fail and automatically veer off course, unable to recognize the route."
Aurora was impressed. "Honey, make sure to give the tech department a raise."
As Todd spoke, the helicopter slowly descended, revealing the island's surface. Many people were running laps around the island, training.
Jack's eyes lit up with excitement, understanding the situation.
John glanced in Jack's direction, his eyes darkening. He quietly took Aurora's hand. "Come on, I'll show you around the base I built."
