Chapter 154 Who Is That Tough Reliance after all

Gabriel stood behind her, his breath brushing past her ear.
Learning that Gabriel wouldn't leave immediately, Jessica's mood, which hadn't completely settled due to the dead cat, inexplicably relaxed for a moment.
As she tidied Danielle's hair, she nodded. "Anyway, this place is all yours. I haven't touched anything in the study; feel free to use it."
Danielle had already fallen asleep by night.
Gabriel had been in the study for over an hour now.
Jessica remembered the pack of coffee she had brought from home, the same pack Gabriel had seen at her place. She decided to boil water for coffee, knocked on the study door, and walked in with a cup of coffee.
"Haven't finished yet? Planning to work late?" she asked.
"The overseas branch has several new projects about to be approved. The materials have been sent to me for immediate review," Gabriel replied.
Talking about work, Gabriel's occasional light banter and elegance seemed to disappear, replaced by seriousness and solemnity.
Gabriel focused on his work, staring at the computer screen.
Jessica watched for a moment, then gently placed the cup down.
Gabriel's posture was upright, like a pine tree, his smoke-gray shirt exuding a strict coldness in the dim light of the study.
For a moment, everything seemed tranquil and distant.
Jessica gazed at him for a moment, feeling an unusual desire for him to work overtime here tonight or, if he got tired, to rest here. She could move to another room if he slept in the main bedroom, considering there were plenty of rooms here.
It was as if seeing him sitting here brought back a sense of calmness to her unsettled heart.
Jessica fetched a few scripts and settled on a single sofa in the study.
These scripts were new ones Mackenzie had recently received, all well-produced with different styles and genres, showing high sincerity when they were delivered.
Jessica was feeling scared tonight, although she didn't say it, her occasional absent-mindedness and different demeanor tonight revealed a hint of significant fear within her.
Her desk's all taken up, so she's juggling another laptop, diving deep into the original text and dissecting the characters of the script. At the same time, she's flipping through the script, cross-referencing the adapted plot, and tearing apart each character's personality.
Despite intending to spend more time with her, Gabriel was always consumed by work, discussing new projects' merits with foreign partners and reviewing their provided materials. It was late into the night when he finally noticed the cold coffee behind him and Jessica sleeping on the single sofa in the study.
Jessica sat cross-legged, holding a notebook and still researching the original materials.
Gabriel averted his gaze, continuing his discussion with the overseas partners until another hour had passed. He was almost pointing towards the early hours of the night, with the sound of steady, shallow breathing in the air.
Jessica had fallen asleep on the sofa.
The scripts and notebook were placed beside her.
Jessica's bun had loosened due to her sleeping position. The buttons of her nightshirt were fastened to the top, and her head was leaning against the sofa, sleeping deeply.
Early the next morning, Jessica was awakened by a phone call. She had a nightmare last night, but at some point, she suddenly stopped dreaming and slept peacefully until now.
Rubbing her sleepy eyes, she picked up the phone and answered, "Hello! Mackenzie!"
"Jessica, where exactly is your new address? I just received a new script. The theme and team are good, and the production company is asking for a response within three days. I'll bring the script to you now," Mackenzie said.
Jessica turned over in bed, not replying immediately. Suddenly, her expression froze, and she sat up abruptly.
When did she return to bed?
Wasn't she in the study last night?
Later, she was too tired to lie alone in the room or disturb Danielle's sleep, so she fell asleep on the sofa.
How did she return to the bedroom?
"The address?" Mackenzie urged on the phone.
Jessica instinctively gave the address, but after saying it, she regretted it, feeling that Mackenzie might misunderstand. After all, Blue Bay Apartments was not a place she could afford to live in casually now.
Mackenzie was indeed surprised, but as the script needed to be delivered urgently, she asked for the address and then hung up, saying they would meet later.
Jessica ran her fingers through her messy hair, then lay back in bed, closed her eyes for a few minutes, and felt unable to fall back asleep. She quickly got up, took a shower in the bedroom's bathroom, and walked out with her hair still wet, dressed in her nightgown, ready to prepare breakfast for Danielle.
The day after the shoot was a weekend, and Danielle didn't have to go to kindergarten. Jessica felt like she had returned to the less busy daily life of focusing solely on accompanying her child.
When did Gabriel leave?
Did he leave after finishing his work?
After frying two eggs, she also fried some ham slices and made a sandwich that Danielle loved. Once everything was ready, she heated some milk, ready to wake Danielle up for breakfast.
Just as she finished preparing breakfast, the doorbell rang suddenly, and a message from Mackenzie on WhatsApp instructed her to answer the door.
Jessica wiped her hands and went to open the door.
Mackenzie stood outside, quickly scanning the spacious living room behind Jessica. Then, looking back at her, she asked, "Whose house is this?"
As expected, Mackenzie had many questions, albeit a bit late.
"A friend's," Jessica replied, knowing her answer was evasive.
She couldn't say it was the person Mackenzie referred to as the 'little white face.'
Mackenzie gave her a disdainful look, knowing this wasn't Jessica's home. After peeking inside, she asked, "Can I come in?"
"Of course, feel free to come in," Jessica hurriedly invited her inside.
At first glance, everything in this living space resembled Jessica's former life.
Except for the fact that the house was many times larger, the furniture and facilities were luxurious and expensive yet understated. Especially the huge floor-to-ceiling window in the living room was a definite highlight, making this apartment top-notch in terms of layout and decoration.
"Jessica, since you joined the "Charles II" crew, I've been aware of everything that has happened," Mackenzie said as she walked around the living room, "You're raising a child alone, and you should indeed have a reliable person by your side. Although I don't know who that tough reliance helping you is if this person is reliable and values you, you must cherish him. But remember, never easily expose your relationship to the public. You need to control that boundary well."
Jessica always admired Mackenzie's quick thinking. "Mackenzie, you've misunderstood again."
Mackenzie glanced at her, raising her hand to interrupt, "Regardless of the misunderstanding, just make sure you've cleanly cut ties with that toy boy who used to live in your house!"
Just as Jessica was about to speak, she suddenly saw Gabriel, who she thought had already left, walking out of the study. Upon hearing Mackenzie's words, his calm and cold gaze fell on the back of Mackenzie's head.
