Chapter 470 I'm Being Followed

Between the lines, he was basically saying he was one of Eugene's guys.

Sure enough, things in the Washington business district were changing fast. Eugene, who got stuck in Washington and couldn't get back to Xyleria, had already built his own network and influence here.

So, was that why Daniel had been so pissed off lately? Because Samuel suddenly got taken under Eugene's wing?

The real grandkids of the Jenner family were just her and Daniel; the others were mostly from her aunt's or grandmother's side. As for why these people also had the last name Jenner, it was probably because they took their mom's surname or something.

Jessica didn't really care about this. Tons of people wanted to get close to the Jenner family. Even those who weren't relatives wished they could have the Jenner surname, let alone those who were somewhat related. How their names were decided when they were young had nothing to do with her.

This guy did seem more reliable than Daniel, and his features somewhat resembled those of the Jenner family. If he was also good at talking and had high emotional intelligence, and Donald had shown favoritism towards him over the past year, Daniel's anger would make sense.

The so-called big moves Eugene made in Washington were just about finding a replacement for Daniel and her, gaining too much trust from Donald.

"I cut ties with the Jenner family long ago. Why would anyone bring me up for no reason? Where did you hear about me?" Jessica acted like she didn't see his outstretched hand, her eyes distant and cold.

Samuel wasn't embarrassed. He pulled his hand back and chuckled, "Of course, from your father."

That old douchebag who was ruined by his own daughter in Xyleria, had his assets seized, and was forcibly ordered back to Washington where he was trapped for two years?

Jessica suddenly smiled. Her insincere smile made Samuel's gaze deepen as he clearly saw the sarcasm in her eyes.

At that moment, the door of the hospital room opened, and Marshall walked out, gently closing the door behind him. He looked at Jessica in surprise, "Ms. Jenner, you are..."

"Marshall." Jessica ignored Samuel and nodded at Marshall, "Hey."

"Well," Marshall smiled at her, "Are you here to see Mr. Jenner? Then go ahead, I'll chat with Nolan and contact you later?"

When Marshall saw Jessica and Nolan together, he realized she must have already signed a contract with their show. Otherwise, why would she be with Nolan?

Jessica nodded, ignoring whether those behind her were considered part of the Jenner family, not even glancing at them. She directly explained her identity to the nurse outside the hospital room, left her license, and entered the room.

The strong smell of disinfectant was everywhere, and the instruments were either silent or making faint beeping sounds. Because the room was so quiet, she could almost easily hear Donald's slow and labored breathing.

Jessica walked to the bedside, looking down at the withered Donald. The once elegant and noble figure in a suit was gone. At this point, he was probably already unconscious.

After a long while, she glanced down at Donald's finger, which was clamped by the pulse oximeter, and said, "Mr. Jenner, I came back to see you. We haven't met many times. In the past twenty-some years, unlike many kids in the Jenner family who wished they could have the surname, I wished I could live my life over again and never be a Jenner."

She saw Donald's finger twitch slightly. Looking up, she noticed the oxygen mask on his face fogging up more than before.

"You told me that I'm your biological granddaughter and wanted me to come back and learn from you. Learn what? The scheming and deceit in the Washington business district? Your plots and calculations? Or the resentment that grows within a family over interests? I wasn't raised with such education, nor did I grow up in an environment driven by self-interest. No matter how I learn, I could never master your 'skills.' Disappointed? You've spent your whole life scheming for all this, but what did you get in the end?" Jessica asked.

Jessica looked calmly at Donald's eyes, struggling to open but failing, and said, "I'm really curious. Seeing the things you've fought for all your life being devoured by the younger generation, how does that make you feel?"

"Throughout the days, of all the people who came to visit you, was there anyone who came out of genuine familial affection?" she added.

Donald's eyelids twitched. Jessica watched him for a moment, sighed softly, and placed her hand on his aged one. His fingers were thin and bony, trembling slightly.

From Daniel to Eugene, to the seemingly gentle but actually ambitious Samuel and others, after Daniel went to prison, whose eyes wouldn't be on her?

After all, she was the only biological granddaughter.

Born into the Jenner family, some things could be avoided for a year or two, but not for a lifetime.

Jessica left the hospital room, and Samuel immediately approached, "Jessica, the hospital has issued a critical condition notice for Mr. Jenner. Many family members will come tonight. Do you want to stay?"

"I'm not available now. Let's see tonight." Jessica didn't look at him and walked straight to the other side of the corridor.

Although this floor was for intensive care, there were many wealthy people in Washington, and the entire floor was full. Many family members and medical staff were in the corridor, making it noisy.

Nurses were bustling around. Jessica was about to head towards the elevator when she suddenly stopped.

Ahead of her was a large glass wall near the elevator, through which she could clearly see two suspicious-looking men coming out of the smoking room, staring straight at her.

The two men were tall and burly, adjusting their baseball caps as they walked out, still staring at her.

Jessica pretended not to notice, looked down at her phone, and saw a message from Gabriel on Facebook.

Gabriel: [I'm on my way there, stay safe.]

She slowly took a step back from the glass wall, pretending to be unintentional, turned away from the elevator, and walked towards the emergency exit, replying as she walked.

Jessica: [I'm being followed.]
