Chapter 49 Matching His Taste
Despite her declarations about sleeping until eleven, Jessica was up early the next morning.
Gabriel stepped out, and the first thing he saw was Jessica with half a slice of bread in her mouth, a towel casually tied around her head, and her face bare without a hint of makeup. She looked like she had just washed it and had not yet applied any skincare products. Her hands were on her hips as she stood on the couch, looking up at the living room ceiling.
As if she had finally spotted something, Jessica's eyes widened, and she thrust the magazine she was holding forcefully toward the ceiling.
With a satisfying "smack," the magazine hit its target. She tossed the magazine aside contentedly, clapped her hands together, stepped down from the sofa, and quickly swallowed the half slice of bread.
This scene was all too familiar, reminiscent of her antics in the bathroom just the night before.
Jessica tossed the magazine into the trash can beside the sofa and, turning around, caught sight of him.
The man was admittedly too handsome for his good. Even when he had been injured, the bruises did nothing to detract from his striking features. Now, he seemed even more impressive. She couldn't help but notice how he had recovered so well recently, perhaps because she had been busy filming and hadn't had much time to care for him at home. He stood tall and proud in the gray lounge clothes she had bought him, brand unknown. He appeared so naturally at the doorway of her bedroom, first thing in the morning that her heartbeat skipped a beat.
"I made sandwiches. Have a bite," Jessica said, taking the towel off her head and roughly drying her hair with it. She looked a bit frazzled and restless from lack of sleep.
Despite having showered the night before, it was her routine to wash her hair while washing her face in the mornings, for practicality's sake. This made it easier to style her hair on set later.
She went into the kitchen and placed two sandwiches on plates, setting them on the dining table with cutlery. When she came back out, she had another slice of bread in her mouth – the two leftover pieces from making sandwiches. Although Jessica was already full, she didn't want to waste bread by leaving the opened package out for too long, so she decided to eat them as well.
Calling it a quick bite was an understatement. Jessica had a real knack for cooking, and even something as simple as bread with eggs and ham delighted Gabriel's taste buds, especially with her clever use of cheese. The meals she'd prepared over the past few days, whether meat or vegetarian, were not only healthy but also incredibly delicious. Even a simple bowl of broth suited his taste perfectly.
Gabriel, who rarely, if ever, indulged in sweets, did not mind cheese when Jessica prepared it.
She began pacing around the house again. After the gruesome demise of the cockroach she had killed in the bathroom last night, the scene had stayed with her, haunting her dreams with images of roaches. This had woken her up early, restless and on edge. After finishing her morning routine, she began a vigilant search around her home, looking to see if any audacious insects dared to invade her space.
The old apartment complexes had drawbacks, but at least her place was clean and sanitary. Since last night, Jessica had scoured the entire house, and all she found were those two roaches, now both eliminated.
His impression of Jessica just gained a new bullet point: extremely proficient at squashing roaches.
