Chapter 490 Mr. Harriman Risked His Life to Protect You
Jessica looked at the person by her bedside in the newly lit lamp light, then glanced around the room.
Although the environment was good, the smell of disinfectant and the IV drip hanging by the bed made it clear that it was a hospital room here, though she wasn't sure which hospital's VIP room it was.
"Rebecca?" she croaked, her voice barely more than a raspy whisper.
"It's me, Jessica." Rebecca waited for her to adjust to the lamp's brightness nearby before turning on the main light in the room, helping her see more clearly. She then came over to support her, "Drink some water?"
"Why are you here?" Jessica asked hoarsely.
"The Jenner family knows about the accident with you and Mr. Harriman, but Landon didn't let anyone into the hospital. It seems like the hospital is under strict control, and no one else can get in. But since Landon is surrounded by men, it wasn't convenient for them to take care of you, so he asked me here." Rebecca explained as she poured a cup of water and brought it to Jessica. "Jessica, drink some water first. You've been unconscious for two days and haven't had any water. Drink a little before you talk."
Memories before she fainted came flooding back, and Jessica glanced towards the door, wondering if anyone was guarding outside.
Rebecca said the hospital was full of Landon's people, but they were actually Gabriel's people.
The Jenner family had no good intentions coming in at this time, and she really wasn't in the mood to deal with them.
After taking a sip of water , Jessica felt like her throat was being scraped by knives.
Jessica endured the pain, took another sip, then pushed the cup away and asked in a hoarse voice, "Where's Gabriel?"
The young girl by the bed licked her lips, looking at her as if unsure how to lie, "In the ICU."
She had predicted it. Gabriel was much more seriously injured than her.
It would be strange if he wasn't in the ICU, but he was also fortunate.
Since she had been unconscious for two days, Gabriel must have been in emergency care all this time. Being in the ICU meant there was still hope!
Everyone knew that in a fire, the most deadly thing wasn't the fire but the smoke!
"I want to see him." She lifted the blanket to get out of bed.
"No, Jessica, you can't move. You need to rest!" Rebecca hurriedly pressed her back down. "I can't remember exactly what the doctors said, but they told me that you have a lot of soft tissue injuries, a concussion from the fall, and dislodged ear stones, which will cause dizziness for a few days. You can't stand up right now."
Jessica indeed felt a wave of dizziness as soon as she tried to get up, stumbling back onto the bed. The intense vertigo almost made her vomit. She barely managed to steady herself, but her body involuntarily fell back, and Rebecca quickly helped her lie down again.
"Jessica, you can't move. You're seriously injured too. Although you don't need to be in the ICU, you inhaled a lot of smoke. They just took your oxygen mask off this afternoon! And it's eleven at night. There are medical staff and Landon’s people guarding the ICU. Don't worry, you need to rest first!" Rebecca said as she tucked Jessica in. "I'll stay here with you. Tell me if you are in need. You can't go to the ICU anyway; but only look from outside. If you really want to see Mr. Harriman, I can take some photos with my phone and show them to you, okay? Just don't move!"
Jessica took nearly a minute to recover from the terrible dizziness, but even with her eyes open, she still felt lightheaded.
Normally, Jessica would find Rebecca's suggestion amusing, but now she couldn't even muster a smile.
She raised her hand to her forehead, breathing heavily from the discomfort, and asked in a hoarse voice, "How is he? Is he out of danger?"
"Not yet. The doctors say he's still in the critical condition and needs to be monitored in the ICU for emergency care at any time." Rebecca sat by the bed, looking worried but unsure how to lie to comfort her. She could only speak softly, "Mr. Harriman inhaled a lot of smoke. I heard that when you were brought to the hospital, he was already in a critical state. The best doctors in Washington have been called in. I don't know the specifics, but Landon told me to stay here and take good care of you. If you wake up, I was asked to notify him and keep you here. He told me that Mr. Harriman risked his life to protect you, so you need to take care of yourself."
Jessica closed her eyes, the dizziness gradually subsiding. Her pale lips moved, and tears soaked her pillow, but she couldn't say a word.
Two days later, Jessica sat on the hospital bed. The doctor had just come in to check on her. The dizziness had lessened significantly over the past two days, but she still couldn't move around easily.
Gabriel was still not out of danger. Rebecca had tried to take some photos in the ICU to show her, but Landon prevented her. Every time, Rebecca returned dejectedly. Jessica hadn't actually asked her to take the photos; Rebecca just wanted to reassure her. Rebecca was too embarrassed to mention being turned away, but her downcast expression each time she returned was obvious.
Lynn and Mackenzie, who had flown in from Xyleria, came to the hospital. Landon allowed them to see her.
When they entered the room, they saw Jessica in a light blue hospital gown. Her hair, slightly singed at the ends in the fire, had been cut from waist-length to just past her shoulders. She was leaning back on the bed, resting with her eyes closed, exuding a strange sense of calm.
Rebecca guessed they might be Jessica's friends, so she didn't disturb them and stepped aside.
"As long as you're okay, that's all that matters. I was worried sick on the way here." Mackenzie rushed to the bedside, grabbing Jessica's hands to feel the warmth. She then checked Jessica's face and hands, confirming that aside from her hair, she had no major injuries, just some minor scrapes. Only then did she breathe a sigh of relief. "I heard you jumped from the third floor? Are you crazy?"
Rebecca looked at Jessica, supposing she might talk more with her friends around, but she remained as quiet as she had been for the past two days.
Rebecca didn't know Jessica well, but she knew that while Jessica wasn't overly lively or talkative, she was not usually like this.
Since learning that Gabriel was still in the critical condition, Jessica had barely spoken.
