Chapter 493 Something Feels Different
No one expected that after a major ordeal, Jessica didn't escape from the Jenner Estate. Instead, she came back to live with them.
The car stopped outside the Jenner Estate. Jessica was wearing a high-end mint green coat, carrying a handbag, with a white shirt underneath. A blue diamond that Gabriel had given her lay on her collarbone, reflecting a brilliant light in the evening glow. Her hair, which was slightly curly before, was now cut to shoulder length, looking intentionally voluminous and wavy in golden curls.
Her wrist was still wrapped in a bandage from a recent scrape. Since it needed a few more days of medication and the outdoor temperature was too low, the bandage hadn't been removed yet.
Jessica usually didn't like to wear makeup in private, preferring simple skincare. Today, she didn't wear makeup either, but having just come out of the hospital, her complexion was inevitably a bit poor. She only applied a matte lipstick, yet even with just that, she looked like she had walked out of an oil painting, exuding a casual yet stunning aura.
Jessica was beautiful; otherwise, she wouldn't be so popular in the entertainment industry. She never used her looks as a weapon and was used to going bare-faced in private, always wanting to blend into the world like a tiny speck of dust when she was away from the camera.
But this time, Jessica's return left everyone who saw her at the door slightly shocked, feeling that she had changed.
Someone who originally had no interest in anything about the Jenner Estate, who couldn't be bothered to look at a single brick or tile of the old mansion, walked into the Jenner Estate courtyard, her gaze sweeping over every visible spot. Her eyes were like a calm lake, and with a slight ripple, they revealed an inscrutable cold smile.
Eugene's car parked behind hers, and as he walked in, he also sensed Jessica's difference.
"Is Mr. Jenner awake?" Jessica ignored Eugene and turned to ask the servant of the Jenner family.
The servant, not expecting Jessica, who usually couldn't be bothered to speak a word to anyone in the Jenner family, to suddenly talk to her, was stunned for a moment before saying, "He's awake, but Mr. Jenner's health is not good. Although he hasn't gone to the hospital, many instruments have been moved from several hospitals into his room. He's been surviving on nutrient solutions for the past couple of days and can't eat any food. Even when he's awake, he's not very lucid."
Jessica didn't ask further and went straight to the room that had long been prepared for her in the Jenner Estate.
The reason it was said to be long prepared was that this bedroom was left for her by Donald, located in a two-story detached house at the back of the mansion. There were servant quarters, a small kitchen, and a simple living room at the first floor while there was a master bedroom, a secondary bedroom, a study, a walk-in closet, and a bathroom at the second floor. Although she hadn't lived here for years and hadn't planned to stay there recently, the servants would still clean the room regularly, so it was relatively tidy and clean.
Rebecca had been helping Jessica with her suitcase since getting out of the car. As they approached the detached house, Jessica stopped and turned back, "I'll take it myself."
Rebecca obediently handed over the suitcase and stood still, not following her inside.
Noticing that Rebecca didn't follow, Jessica looked back at her, "What's up?"
Rebecca shook her head, then looked at the detached house in front of her, taking a step back somewhat awkwardly.
Although Rebecca had lived in the Jenner Estate since childhood, she had never had a good day. She lived in the room her mother used to stay in, and no servants took care of her. Even though she was Donald's biological granddaughter and could openly call him grandpa, no one really cared about her.
Given Donald's character, who only cared about the family business and was indifferent to family ties, it was even less likely that he would care about Rebecca's situation at home.
"I'm not used to living alone. Come stay with me," Jessica said, dragging her suitcase with one hand and pulling Rebecca with the other, not giving her a chance to hesitate and directly bringing her inside.
It wasn't a very large villa, but it was Jessica's own place. With few people living in and being a detached house, the space wasenough for her.
There was a master bedroom and a secondary bedroom on the second floor. The secondary bedroom was also on the sunny side, with good lighting and other conditions, not much worse than the master bedroom. They were only five or six feet apart. Jessica took a look at the secondary bedroom and decided that Rebecca would stay here from now on.
"But this is your place," Rebecca whispered.
"I told you could stay, so just stay. Don't overthink." Jessica didn't let Rebecca pack her suitcase. She called a servant to help move Rebecca's belongings over.
The servant hesitated, seemingly reluctant, but couldn't refuse Jessica's order. After a moment of hesitation, under Jessica's slightly cold and warning gaze, the servant had no choice but to go out.
Jessica knew Rebecca was worried about whether it would be inconvenient if Gabriel came here in the future.
But for Jessica, if she no longer planned to avoid everything about the Jenner family and was willing to cooperate with Eugene in playing a harmonious father-daughter act to gain most of the Jenner family shares, she probably wouldn't stay here afterward. But if she didn't want to stay in the Jenner Estate after doing everything she needed to do, she wouldn't live here either. The detached house would be empty anyway, so letting Rebecca move in was not bad.
It was almost 1 a.m, the detached house of the Jenner Estate was still brightly lit.
The servants didn't know what Jessica's sudden high-profile return was about, but Eugene had instructed them to serve her well. Now that Donald could pass away at any moment, no one knew who would hold the power in the Jenner family. They didn't dare to neglect Jessica. After making a late-night snack for Eugene, they also prepared a bowl of fish maw soup for Jessica.
But Rebecca didn't let the servant go upstairs. She ran down to get it and then brought the bowl of fish maw soup to Jessica.
Jessica was sitting alone on the sofa in the bedroom, with a thin blanket over her legs and a laptop on her lap. Her expression was indifferent, and through the rising steam from the fish maw soup, she looked even more blurred.
"Not drinking?" Rebecca asked softly.
"No, throw it away," Jessica replied indifferently.
"Uncle Eugene asked the servant to bring it. It should be fine, right?" Rebecca had gotten smarter, knowing what Jessica was wary of.
Even Eugene himself might be under someone else's surveillance, so how could he guarantee the absolute safety of the people he called? He didn't have good intentions in the first place. Although they were father and daughter, it was just mutual exploitation.
Jessica didn't explain. She moved the laptop in her lap slightly and said indifferently, "Take it away."
