Chapter 342 Mr. Harriman of Xyleria
In that direction, the place was packed with elites and big shots, all toasting and mingling.
Only Jessica and Mackenzie’s corner seemed deserted. They stood there, sipping wine, looking like they were more into the drink than the scene.
But that didn’t stop some uninvited guests from barging in.
“Didn’t expect to see you here,” a voice suddenly came from the left.
Mackenzie turned and saw a guy about 5'9", slim build. His suit was pricey, but he didn’t quite fill it out. His words were aimed at Jessica.
Mackenzie thought, 'Who is this guy?'
She didn’t recognize him from their circle and nudged Jessica, looking for answers.
Jessica’s eyes flashed with disdain when she saw him, but she spoke up, “There are lots of things you didn’t expect.”
The guy sneered, “This is the business world, not your entertainment playground. What’s a little star like you doing here?”
Mackenzie, keeping her cool despite his tone, said, “Jessica’s here as the spokesperson for the new software, invited fair and square.”
The guy glanced at Mackenzie but ignored her, eyeing Jessica up and down. “I saw you in Country W six months ago. No makeup then. Now you look a bit like a star. If you like this circle, stick to acting and being adored. Stay away from Country W to avoid trouble.”
Jessica wanted to avoid further interaction, but not a scene. Unluckly, he was blocking her view of the red carpet entrance.
She said coldly, “Only you would think Country W is great. I have no events or filming there. Do you think I want to go?”
The guy raised an eyebrow, seemingly pleased with her answer, and toned down his mockery. He was about to clink glasses, but Jessica moved her glass aside, not interested.
He looked annoyed and warned in a low voice, “Jessica, don’t be ungrateful. If you can’t make it in entertainment, you might need my help.”
“Mr. Jenner, you overestimate yourself. Donald hasn’t handed over the inheritance to you; he’s just letting you manage the Jenner family business in Country W for now.” Jessica looked at him. “I’ve lived for twenty-six years without relying on the Jenner family in Xyleria or Country W. I can make my own way. Even if you begged to give me your precious things, I might not want them.”
“You've never been banned from showbiz before. Also, Jessica, you should speak to me more respectfully. I am, after all, your cousin.” The guy suddenly got all self-important. “Why call me Mr. Jenner? So distant?”
As he spoke, he suddenly smiled and reached out to pinch Jessica’s delicately made-up chin.
Mackenzie was thrown off by the word "cousin" at first. But as Jessica stepped aside, Mackenzie raised her hand to push the guy’s hand away. “Sir, please respect yourself. Don’t touch her in public.”
“What do you mean, don’t touch? Jessica is my cousin. My grandfather is her grandfather,” the guy sneered, pulling his hand back and then touching his own chin, eyeing Jessica in her women’s suit. “But from what you’re saying, as long as it’s not in public, you wouldn’t stop anyone from touching you?”
“Daniel, don’t be so shameless. I don’t know you well.” Jessica’s eyes were full of distance and disgust.
If it weren’t such a hassle to change her name, she would’ve ditched the Jenner name ages ago.
This Daniel was another grandson of Donald. He was a troublemaker from a young age, later forced by his dad, Jessica’s second uncle, to learn business management. He picked up some skills but stayed a rogue. Faced with declining health and Jessica's unwillingness to return,, Donald had to entrust the Country W business to Daniel at least for the time being.
A few months ago, Jessica had a filming gig in Country W. Eugene came to meet her, saying Donald was in poor health and might not recover if he stayed in the hospital, hoping Jessica would visit him.
Jessica had no intention of going back to the Jenners. She wanted nothing to do with them, including Eugene – he wasn't her "Dad."
In the end, Donald suddenly got discharged , booking the hotel next to her film crew and inviting her for a family dinner conspicuously.
That night, several elders of the Jenner family were present, including uncles she had never met and this cousin named Daniel.
Jessica was quietly invited to the hotel. The crew didn’t know, and she hadn’t mentioned her connection to the Jenner family in Country W to anyone around her.
But her second uncle apparently knew what Donald had planned before, so Daniel had been sizing her up, disliking her from the first moment they met.
Including today’s encounter, he was reminding Jessica to continue being a star and not to return to Country W to take everything from him.
After being called shameless by Jessica, Daniel’s face instantly darkened, glaring coldly at her.
“Mackenzie, I might have drunk too quickly just now and feel a bit nauseous. Accompany me to the restroom.” Jessica still didn’t give him any face and turned to leave.
Daniel, looking displeased, finished his drink, swallowed it, and cursed under his breath as he watched Jessica leave, “Bitch, when DonaldJenner’s gone and I get the official inheritance, I’ll see how I deal with you.”
Daniel thought, 'Wouldn’t I be able to blacklist you at will? Send you to anyone I wanted to play with?'
' Just a star .'
In his eyes, she was just a pretty toy. As soon as Donald was gone, Jessica, being a Jenner, would be his to play with as he pleased.
Daniel sneered and turned towards the entrance of the exhibition hall, picking up another glass of wine, intending to meet Gabriel from Xyleria. But before he could get close, he suddenly felt a cold gaze from ahead.
