Chapter 468 Mrs. Jenner Has Middle-Aged Male Fans
Lynn stayed behind to discuss the newbies with the them.
Jessica stepped out to take a call, and by the time she got back, the negotiations were pretty much wrapped up.
Lynn had managed to get the newbies to sign a temporary two-episode deal. Jessica, on the other hand, couldn't commit to the full twelve-episode season because her schedule was already packed. So, she just signed on for a six-episode half-season for now.
The show was all about outdoor adventures, a reality series from abroad. It blew up after its premiere last year, and fans were buzzing with excitement for the second season.
Just then, Nolan came back from his call. He sat down, glanced at Jessica, and said, "Lynn was asking why the chief director isn't here. I haven't had a chance to explain yet, but he's at the hospital visiting Donald. If the industry rumors are true, you're Donald's granddaughter, right?"
Jessica didn't expect to bump into someone who knew about the Jenner family here.
But hey, this was Washington, and the director of this show had to have some serious connections to make it here.
Jessica nodded, "Yeah, that's right."
"Small world. The chief director asked me to drop off some stuff at the hospital. Mrs. Jenner, want to tag along? You just got back to Washington today, right? Have you visited Mr. Jenner yet?" Nolan asked.
"Not yet. I was waiting for a call and planned to go this evening," Jessica said, checking the time. "If it's cool, I can go with you now."
"Sure, you can meet the chief director too," Nolan said.
On the way to the hospital in Nolan's car, Jessica asked, "Is the chief director close with the Jenner family?"
Nolan replied, "Yeah, they've always been tight. Our chief director's last name is Stewart. His family is a big deal in Washington. But he went into directing instead of the family business. His dad and Donald were really good friends. He grew up with Donald looking out for him. Now that Mr. Jenner is seriously ill, Mr. Stewart has to visit him."
Jessica hadn't planned on running into too many people from the Jenner family; otherwise, she wouldn't have agreed to go with Nolan.
Before they got to the hospital, she shot Gabriel a message on Facebook.
Jessica: [Heading to the hospital with a friend.]
Even though she didn't want to see too many people from the Jenner family, it was bound to happen at the hospital.
Especially Eugene, whom she hadn't seen in over two years.
As Jessica walked into the hospital's busy reception hall, she noticed it was packed, as usual for Washington hospitals. Despite the special passages, she followed Nolan and had to use the regular passage and elevator.
While Nolan was asking for Donald's ward at the reception desk, Jessica turned and spotted Eugene talking to a few people in a quieter area.
Eugene noticed Jessica staring at him, rather obviously, and turned to face her.
He first noticed a young woman in a hat, mask, and sunglasses. After a closer look, he said a few words to the people with him and walked straight towards Jessica.
"Why didn't you give me a heads-up before coming?" Eugene asked as he approached.
Even though they were family, there hadn't been any real affection between them for the past twenty years. Eugene had been stuck in Washington because of Jessica.
Jessica could tell that the past two years in Washington hadn't been kind to Eugene. The various issues with the Jenner family had worn down his sharp edges. He looked more composed now. Even though he felt guilty facing Jessica after all this time, his face showed little emotion, as if they weren't that unfamiliar.
The Jenner family and the business world in Washington were definitely good places to toughen people up.
Donald had been right.
Jessica took off her sunglasses, glanced at Eugene, and then looked towards Nolan, who was still talking to the receptionist. "I came with a friend. I have other things to do in Washington. I'll just take a quick look and leave. I don't plan to meet other relatives from the Jenner family."
"Even if you don't plan to meet them, you should. I already know about Daniel's situation in Xyleria. There are no secrets in the Jenner family. Some things can't be avoided," Eugene said, staring into her eyes. "Jessica, you look a lot like your mother."
Jessica gave him a surprised look, as if she had heard a big joke.
Back then, he even used her mother's few remaining stuffs to threaten her into staying in Xyleria. Now he dared to mention her mother?
A heartless person suddenly talking about feelings was so disgusting.
Jessica smiled indifferently, as if he was talking nonsense. She put her sunglasses back on, turned to Nolan, who had walked over, and said a few words before heading to the elevator with him, ignoring Eugene.
Nolan didn't know the Jenner family members. He was just there to find Marshall. Seeing the well-dressed man in his fifties staring at Jessica, he thought it was a fan who recognized her. He instinctively shielded her and hurried her into the elevator.
"That guy was staring at you. Could it be that you have middle-aged male fans?" Nolan joked as they exited the elevator.
Jessica looked around the corridor outside the elevator and said lightly, "That's my dad."
Nolan was shocked.
Jessica walked towards the ward, and Nolan followed, "That was your father? I couldn't tell. You were so cold, like you were dealing with a fan invading your privacy. The Jenner family is big and complicated. Internal conflicts are beyond the understanding of ordinary person like me."
Jessica replied, "I'm just an ordinary person too."
"No way. Besides your connection to the Jenner family, you're also Mr. Harriman's wife. If you are an ordinary person, then those so-called big shots in Washington are really nothing," Nolan said.
Jessica, hearing this, picked up her phone and saw Gabriel's reply on Facebook.
Gabriel: [Send me the hospital location.]
She sent him the location and put her phone away, not saying much more to Nolan as they entered the VIP ward area.
The ward area had special security measures. Jessica placed her bag down for inspection.
Nolan was just about to call Marshall when he suddenly paused, noticing two oddly dressed people with baseball caps passing by and glancing at Jessica.
