Chapter 347 Can’t a Person Get Some Sleep?
Ten days before the premiere of "Shadow Kill."
Jessica flew to W City for a magazine cover shoot. Last year, she graced the year-end digital issue, and this year, they wanted her for the September print cover, bringing in the best photographer and stylist in town.
"'Eolo' is one of the top magazines in the country. Landing the cover is a big deal, especially the September and October issues. Not just anyone gets that spot," Lynn said, glancing at Jessica in the dressing room mirror. "I talked to their director. They want to do a digital special with you after your new movie drops in October. I'll block out a day for you, so keep that open."
"Just follow your plans," Jessica replied as she got her makeup done. The stylist was a pro. Jessica's skin was great, so they kept the foundation light and focused on perfecting her eye makeup.
Jessica was on point during the shoot. Lynn, who had strong connections with business and media teams in both S City and W City, kept in touch with the staff about the shoot and Jessica’s look.
They wrapped up around eleven at night after a smooth day. The "Eolo" team booked them a room at a nearby seven-star hotel, and they planned to fly back to Xyleria the next afternoon.
Jessica's trip to W City was kept off the studio's schedule to avoid airport chaos. She also didn't contact the Jenner family there.
Back at the hotel, Jessica showered and got ready for bed. It was past midnight. She was about to sleep when the doorbell rang.
Jessica thought, 'Who could it be this late? Lynn’s already asleep.'
She hesitated but opened the door. A hotel staff member in uniform stood there with a tray of fancy fruits. "Hello, this is the daily fruit platter for guests. We knew you returned late, so we delivered it now."
Jessica couldn’t muster a polite "thank you." This was a seven-star hotel; they should know better than to knock this late. She took the fruit platter, held back her words, and glanced at the young staff member, who looked to be in her twenties. Assuming she was new and didn’t know better, Jessica didn’t criticize her and was about to close the door.
"Ms. Jenner," the staff member suddenly blurted out, her face flushing with excitement. "I’m your fan!"
Jessica looked at her again and nodded politely. "Thanks." She was about to close the door.
The staff member quickly added, "I’m really sorry to bother you so late, but I heard you might be staying here tonight, so I switched shifts to wait for you. Could you please sign an autograph for me?"
She pulled out a few photos of Jessica from her pocket, clearly prepared, proving her fan status.
But at this hour, using her job to find out about Jessica's stay and blocking her at the door—this kind of fan behavior invading an artist’s privacy was really annoying.
"Sorry, I need to rest now," Jessica said, dropping her polite facade. She ignored the fan and closed the door, shutting her out.
She returned to the bed, glanced at the fruit platter she had set aside. Though it was indeed exquisite and filled with fresh, expensive fruits, she had no appetite.
She had flown to W City early in the morning, had no time to rest, went straight to makeup and shooting, and now, after nearly twenty-four hours, she hadn't slept, not on the plane, not while working.
Since becoming famous, she had encountered many strange fans and those invading her privacy, but this was the first time someone knocked on her hotel door so late.
Exhausted and irritated, Jessica lay down on the bed, pulled the blanket over her face, and quickly fell asleep.
At dawn, around six in the morning, the doorbell rang again.
The flight back to Xyleria was at around two in the afternoon, so Jessica could sleep until eleven before getting up to pack. She hadn't set an alarm, planning to wake up naturally.
The first ring didn't wake her, but the second did. She frowned, grabbed her phone to check the time, and looked at the door in disbelief. Lynn wouldn't be up at this hour either. Suspecting it was the fan from last night, she closed her eyes and decided to ignore it.
The doorbell persisted. Jessica sat up abruptly in bed, her hair a mess from sleep. She got out of bed, forgetting her slippers in her anger, and opened the door. As expected, it was the hotel staff from last night, now pushing a fancy breakfast cart. Seeing the door open, she smiled brightly. "Good morning, Ms. Jenner. Here's your breakfast. Considering you might not want to go to the restaurant, I brought it to your room."
Jessica, not fully rested and woken up abruptly, looked at the person outside with a cold expression. "Did I say I needed this service?"
The staff member was taken aback.
Jessica then noticed the staff’s phone peeking out from her pocket, the camera lens visible. She immediately stared at the pocket and said coldly, "My studio has already issued a statement against fans invading artists' privacy. You should know what you're doing. Also, filming me in my hotel room without my consent, like recording me just waking up, I can sue you anytime."
The staff member panicked, quickly covering her phone, looking flustered. "I wasn't filming. I just came to bring you breakfast. Ms. Jenner, I really like you, that’s why I did this."
