Chapter 472 Don't be Afraid, It's Me

She didn't even bother to look back. Instead, she squeezed into the elevator with two nurses who were pushing an elderly patient on a gurney, ignoring their curious glances. She kept her head down and watched them press the button to go up. Realizing they were taking the patient to an upper floor, she quickly pressed the buttons for the tenth and twelfth floors.

The elevator made brief stops on both floors before heading to the elderly patient's destination.

Once there, Jessica made a beeline for the stairwell. Just as she was about to dash down to the first floor, she noticed that the jacket she had hidden behind a trash can on the eighth floor was gone.

She paused, hearing hurried footsteps from the floors below.

She had left her jacket as bait to make them wait on the eighth floor. Normally, they should have moved on, but someone was still guarding these floors.

Was it just bad luck, or were there more of them? Or maybe it was someone else entirely?

By now, it was likely more than just Samuel knew she was at the hospital.

Jessica took a couple of steps back and ran down the corridor. She slipped into a room with an open door, probably left ajar by a family member who had stepped out. Inside, a patient was sleeping soundly.

She didn't approach the patient but leaned against the wall by the door, gently closing it to avoid detection. She then heard hurried footsteps outside, as if someone was searching nearby.

At that moment, the door opened, and a family member carrying a basin of water walked in. They turned and saw Jessica in a nurse's uniform in the room, even though they hadn't called for a nurse.

"You...?" The family member looked at her, confused.

Jessica turned and walked to the other empty bed in the room. Glancing at the bed number, she began tidying the clean white sheets and said, "A new patient will be here soon."

The family member, who thought the bed would be empty for the night since the previous patient had just been discharged that morning, was surprised. They had planned to use the bed as a makeshift cot for themselves.

After asking a few more questions, the family member stopped paying attention to the nurse with the unusually good figure and pleasant voice, turning instead to tend to their own patient.

Jessica continued tidying for another two minutes before quietly leaving. She looked around and saw the elevator doors opening. By this time, she walked in.

Her phone vibrated in her pocket. She glanced at it and saw an unfamiliar number, so she didn't answer.

When she followed a nurse out of the elevator, she realized they were on the second floor. The nurse who had just exited was pushing a cart to distribute medication. Without a work badge, Jessica couldn't help directly, so she followed behind.

Medical staff and family members passed by Jessica without sensing anything unusual. Jessica had played a nurse in a film before and knew roughly what to do. When she encountered puzzled looks, she quickly turned to busy herself with other tasks, like helping push the medication cart or moving large potted plants in the corridor, making herself appear to be in a normal "busy working state" and avoiding any suspicion.

Suddenly, through the lush green leaves of a potted plant, she saw a man wearing a baseball cap emerge from a room on the second floor, possibly a break room or a pantry, and head quickly toward the elevator. She saw him enter the elevator and go up.

Jessica hid behind the potted plant and glanced down the corridor.

If she went down one more floor, she would reach the first floor. Since one of the stalkers had just gone up, the first floor was probably safe now. Even if there was someone guarding it, it would likely be less risky.

She made a quick decision and headed for the stairwell, putting on her medical mask as she went. She hurried down to the first floor and, instead of heading for the main entrance, checked the signs near the stairs and made her way to the back door.

Just as she reached the back door, she saw a guy with a bulging backpack standing there, staring right at her.

The inpatient area was different from the emergency department. The corridors were packed with family members carrying medication and food, and nurses were constantly pushing carts to deliver meals to various rooms.

Jessica turned and bolted. As she passed a meal cart, she knocked over a row of steaming bowls, causing a nurse to scream and a cloud of steam to rise, creating a brief chaos. She used the confusion to blend into the crowd and head for the main entrance.

Within seconds, the guy with the backpack slipped on the spilled soup and nearly lost his footing. After cursing under his breath, he pushed aside the obstructing nurse and followed.

The first-floor corridor of the inpatient area was in chaos. Jessica, dressed as a nurse, blended into the crowd, making it impossible to spot her immediately. By the time the guy managed to push through the crowd, Jessica had vanished.

He quickly walked outside, pulling out his phone and speaking urgently in a low voice, "Hey, she got away. Guard the main entrance. She came with that director, and she didn't drive herself. As long as she hasn't gotten into a car, we can still catch her!"

When he hung up and continued searching outside, Jessica had already slipped back into the hospital and was hiding behind a potted plant.

She had overheard the phone conversation, so she couldn't leave now.

Her phone kept vibrating in her pocket, but she couldn't answer it. As the guy rushed outside, she turned and pressed herself against the wall, hiding behind the potted plant without moving.

Looking around, she realized that staying outside or on the first floor was the most dangerous option, given that she didn't know how many people were after her or what their intentions were.

She needed to get back upstairs in the inpatient area.

Seeing the guy searching outside, she remained vigilant, quietly sticking to the wall and quickly making her way back.

The first-floor corridor was still a bit chaotic from the spilled soup. Nurses had called for a janitor to help clean up, and a few people stood around, puzzled, discussing what had happened and planning to check the surveillance footage later.

Hearing about the surveillance cameras, Jessica looked up at the cameras in the corners of the first-floor corridor. She hoped those people were just following her secretly and didn't have the capability to access the surveillance room.

Otherwise, her every move would be under their watch, leaving her no way to escape.

As Jessica stood there staring at the cameras, the elevator suddenly stopped on the first floor, and Samuel quickly walked out. Seeing Jessica, he hurried over and reached out to grab her wrist, speaking in a low voice, "Jessica, you need to come with me. There's something going on at the hospital..."

Before Samuel could finish, Jessica quickly dodged his hand and turned to run. She unexpectedly bumped into someone and instinctively tried to back away, but the person held her.

She immediately tensed up, her body on high alert, but then she caught a familiar scent.

A familiar voice came to her. "Don't be afraid, it's me."

Jessica looked up to see Gabriel tightening his arms around her, his eyes filled with concern. He kissed her forehead to comfort her and draped his jacket over her.
