Chapter 483 The Long-Standing Secrets of the Wealthy Family
Shortly after, the restaurant served the food . Gabriel calmly and leisurely cut the foie gras for her, his expression revealing nothing.
But Jessica knew that he was already aware of some things; otherwise, he wouldn't have left the matters in Xyleria to accompany her back to the Jenner family.
"How much of the Jenner family's current situation have you figured out?" Gabriel asked as he handed her the foie gras and then put on disposable gloves to peel shrimp for her.
Jessica wanted to tell him she could do it herself, but being pampered by Gabriel was quite enjoyable. So, she didn't refuse, happily eating the foie gras while watching him peel the shrimp. She rested her chin on her hand and said, "I only know that most of the major enterprises of the Jenner family are still under Donald's control, and the shares haven't been transferred. That's why those people are watching him so closely. If Donald doesn't sort out the inheritance of the shares or leave a will before he dies, Eugene and Aaron will definitely have conflicts over the inheritance. Moreover, Donald has several daughters, who were not around before, though, have recently come back to 'fulfill their filial duties.' Even a 2% share of Donald's holdings is worth hundreds of millions of dollars."
As she spoke, Jessica drew circles on her plate with a spoon and said softly, "But today, I found out that Aaron has been controlling Manhattan Construction for many years, dealing with construction and land acquisition in Washington. He has managed business and political relationships well, but he never gained Donald's favor, so he doesn't have any shares in the Jenner family. His son, Daniel, is also a loser. Despite being the only grandson and having to be valued, he never seized the opportunity. He has done too many foolish things in front of Donald, who has long given up on him and never intended to hand over the Jenner family to someone like him."
"So, Eugene, who was trapped in Washington and couldn't leave, saw the opportunity and, after two years of lying low, became the biggest rival to Aaron and Daniel. I don't want to come back and acknowledge the Jenner family. Eugene has no sons, so he brought Samuel, a distant relative's son, to his side. But even if they play their cards right, Donald will still care about blood relations. So..." Jessica's spoon paused on the plate, and she said lightly, "Eugene wants me back. He wants me to be his trump card, and with my relationship with you, that would be his key to victory."
Jessica squinted her eyes. "So Aaron can't wait for me to disappear now. When Daniel came to find me, cursing, it was already a sign. But he's too stupid; it's not an exaggeration to say he alerted the enemy."
Gabriel said calmly, "If he weren't stupid, given the years they have spent with Mr. Jenner, they would have achieved something by now."
Jessica raised an eyebrow. "But even if the grandson is unreliable, if Aaron were a shrewd businessman, being a biological son, would Donald need to guard against them so much? Even today, when he could barely speak, he reminded me to be careful of Aaron. But I think his warning isn't just about the current inheritance competition in the Jenner family. Is there another meaning?"
Gabriel said in a deep voice, "That's what I'm wondering too."
Jessica was surprised. "So, the reason why you didn't speak is that you haven't figured out the conflict between Aaron and Mr. Jenner?"
"In ordinary families, each has its unique difficulties, let alone a prestigious family rooted in Washington for so long. The deep-seated secrets of such a family aren't easily to be exposed unless they choose to reveal them themselves." Gabriel handed her the peeled shrimp. "Stop thinking about it and eat."
Jessica didn't say more, but she suddenly recalled the first time she met Donald and what he had said.
He had specifically mentioned that her mother's death had nothing to do with him. He had only caused the separation between her mother and Eugene, but he didn't elaborate.
Although it was dark in the car and she couldn't see clearly, Jessica remembered looking closely at Donald's eyes.
When he mentioned her mother, his eyes turned to look out the window and didn't meet hers.
At that time, he was determined to bring her back to the Jenner Estate and train her, without considering Aaron and Daniel.
Even though Eugene was nothing in Michael's eyes, he still had other children and grandchildren. Yet, he insisted on bringing back his granddaughter, whom he had met for the first time, and sincerely wanted her to stay and train her.
Was it because of blood relations?
If Donald valued that, Daniel, who grew up with him, couldn't have had a bad relationship with him.
Or was it because she had the potential to become a future businesswoman?
This wasn't a fairy tale; there was no such thing as a halo of potential.
Donald was determined to bring her back, so there must be a reason.
Could that reason be related to Aaron?
Why did he look away when he mentioned her mother and not continue to look her eyes?
After dinner, they went back to the hotel , Jessica leaned on the sofa with a pillow. On the coffee table was an iPad, showing a live broadcast of Washington's news. The host was talking about the day's events, mentioning that luxury cars had gathered near a century-old mansion, causing a traffic jam.
Looking closely, wasn't that century-old mansion the Jenner Estate's main house?
Jessica hadn't noticed that because some streets in Washington weren't that spacious, there weren't many parking spaces. With so many people at the Jenner Estate, there were also many cars outside, causing a social news story due to the parking congestion.
Since it was a news channel, it kept broadcasting local news. Jessica turned off the page and randomly opened a movie.
It was an animated film, probably the one Danielle had found on her iPad while in Xyleria and saved in her favorites.
She wasn't in the mood to watch a movie, so she just left it on the coffee table. The iPad played cheerful and lively songs. The sound of water stopped in the bathroom, and Gabriel came out. Seeing she wasn't asleep, he glanced at her and was about to come over when his phone rang. He looked at the caller ID and answered the call.
