Chapter 243 This Was Always His Place

As Jessica returned to Blue Bay Apartments, Mackenzie called to inform her that "Charles II" had been rescheduled to premiere three days later.

Due to an unexpected issue with a celebrity on a variety show that was originally scheduled to air, the show was banned, and "Charles II," which was initially scheduled to air later, was moved up by more than a week.

The day before the premiere, the production team planned to hold a press conference on a popular video platform. They sent Jessica a list of requirements, including wardrobe and styling, lines from the show to mention during interactions with the host, and some basic promotional plans.

As Jessica walked in the door, she was looking down at the information Mackenzie had sent her. Just as she was about to close the door, she paused, stepped back, and looked at the fingerprint password lock on the door. She decisively changed the previous password and checked the fingerprints again to ensure that only hers and Caroline's fingerprints were recorded. Only then did she re-enter and close the door.

Even though this was always his place, she didn't know if this was all in vain.

Caroline didn't ask much about her sudden change of the password, assuming it was for security reasons.

After being away for more than a week, when she went to pick up Danielle in the evening, Danielle gave her a big hug, showering her with kisses and hugs, and chattered on about wanting to sleep with Mommy for a few days. Danielle missed Jessica so much and just wanted to sleep with her.

Jessica quickly took her little darling to the mall to buy delicious food, play in the play area, eat at a children's restaurant, and buy pretty little dresses and toy bead necklaces for her.

That evening, back home, Danielle happily wore the necklace she had made with colorful toy beads around her neck, shaking her head and saying, "Mommy, do I look pretty?"

Jessica was in the kitchen with Caroline, who was making sandwiches. Jessica, with flour on her hands, turned around to see the smug Danielle and tapped her on the nose, "You little show-off!"

Danielle giggled and leaned against her leg, looking up and saying, "Oh, Mommy, Uncle Wilson gave me a children's watch. I can talk to Uncle Spencer with it!"

The smile in Jessica's eyes faded slightly, and she responded, "I know."

Then she patted Danielle's little head. "Go play by yourself; Mommy needs to help Caroline for a bit."

"Mommy, don't you want to see my watch? I can really talk to Uncle Spencer with it!"

Whenever Jessica heard Gabriel's name now, the photo posted on Facebook by the person called Harriman's little squirrel popped into her mind. She didn't want to mention him at all or anything related to him.

After sending Danielle back to the living room, Jessica lowered her head and continued making the sandwiches.

Caroline, busy with her tasks, said, "The flu has been pretty bad lately. My son caught a cold and has been resting in his dorm for the past few days. There's no one near his university to take care of him, but he's been running a fever. Since you're back, I thought I'd go take care of him for a few days and come back once he's better."

Hearing this, Jessica quickly took over from Caroline. "You should go now. I can handle things here. Go quickly."

Caroline, indeed anxious, changed out of her apron and, before leaving, was given a lot of nutritional supplements by Jessica. She thanked Jessica profusely before leaving the house.

At night.

Danielle snuggled in Jessica's arms as Jessica read her a bedtime story. After finishing the story, Danielle proudly took out her children's watch from under the pillow to show her.

"Mommy, I say goodnight to Uncle Spencer every day, but Uncle Spencer said he's been a bit busy lately and can only reply when he has time. I haven't bothered him these past few days. Mommy, do you want to use this to say something to Uncle Spencer?" Danielle fiddled with her pink watch, looking conflicted as she wanted to talk to Uncle Spencer but was afraid he was too busy, clearly hoping Jessica would help her.

"If he's that busy, there's no need to bother him. What's the difference if I bother him or you do?" Jessica took the watch from her and set it aside. "Stop playing with that and go to sleep."

Danielle snuggled into her arms. "Mommy, are you not feeling well?"

Jessica looked down at her. "Why would you ask that?"

Danielle raised her little hand and poked her cheek. "Mommy, you look like you're not feeling well."

Jessica's heart softened, and she kissed Danielle's little hand.

Having not eaten for two days and being locked in a dusty room, even though she had a simple meal in Cynthia's car later, her stomach was still a bit uncomfortable from the sudden hunger.

Her nose still felt irritated from the dust in the attic, making her voice slightly hoarse and nasal, and her head felt dizzy.

Her face must have looked a bit haggard for even Danielle to notice.

"Mommy just didn't sleep well. I can only sleep soundly when I'm holding you." She hugged Danielle's soft little body, her face against Danielle's tender cheek, and closed her eyes. "A good night's sleep will make everything better."

Feeling sorry for her mom, Danielle stopped talking to avoid disturbing her sleep. She raised her little arms to hug  Jessica's head and, imitating how her mom usually kissed her, gently kissed her mom's forehead.

The next day, Jessica went straight back to the set to film. Mackenzie had already taken care of the reasons for her absence over the past few days.

The following morning, she had to prepare for the premiere press conference of "Charles II." However, she wasn't the lead actress, and despite her high popularity on Facebook, the main focus was still on the lead actor and actress. Jessica was only mentioned occasionally to say a few promotional lines.

Due to the rescheduling, some investors and actors couldn't make it to the press conference, making it somewhat rushed, but many media outlets attended.

The press conference lasted only two hours. Jessica had been working non-stop since returning from the Jenner family. She filmed all day yesterday, picked up Danielle after dark, and came to the press conference early in the morning after dropping off Danielle.

Her stomach was uncomfortable, and she had a low-grade fever, but it was only around 99.5 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit, so she didn't think much of it.

It wasn't until after the press conference that she felt cold sweat on her back.

Many media members surrounded her afterward, eager to ask various gossip questions. Zoey noticed Jessica's pale face and politely held the media back.

"Jessica, are you okay?" Zoey squeezed through the media crowd and held Jessica's hand. Since Jessica only had a low-grade fever, Zoey didn't feel much heat but noticed her pale face. "Have you not been resting well these past few days? Mackenzie is having a meeting at Whispering Pines across the street. Do you want to find a room there to rest for a bit?"
