Chapter 72 The Missing Cliff Fallers
Harriman Group CEO
Jessica was in the car, still reading the two newspapers. From when she fell into the river to being rescued, she didn't see exactly what happened at the time.
So, she herself didn't know if she was deliberately hit by a car.
She had originally planned to have someone investigate after her injuries healed. The police should be able to find the surveillance footage from the section of the bridge where it happened and determine what exactly occurred.
But she really didn't want to bring this matter up at home, especially since Danielle was there in the evening.
She glanced in Gabriel's direction, and sure enough, the man heard Mackenzie's words, and his gaze fell back on her face.
Mackenzie continued to blabber, "Fortunately, you're okay. The plays these past few days have all been at night, so you were able to rest during these days of recovery. It's also a good time to recharge and let me handle the investigation. You don't have to worry about it."
Speaking of which, Mackenzie asked with confusion, "Why aren't you saying anything? Have you arrived home? If you're still waiting in the hallway, I'll return and help you to your home!"
Jessica quickly raised her voice towards the direction of her cellphone, "I've arrived home, just too far away from my cellphone to speak."
Mackenzie responded with an "Alright" on the other end, then paused and suddenly asked sharply, "So who helped you with the speakerphone? Danielle couldn't possibly be at home at this time!"
Jessica was rendered speechless.
In the next moment, Mackenzie suddenly exclaimed in anger, "It's that pretty boy again? You still haven't cut ties with him? Jessica, I told you…"
The tall figure of the man moved slightly and walked to the coffee table, casually hanging up the call.
Finally, some peace and quiet!
Although she felt a little sorry for Mackenzie, Jessica wasn't feeling too well at the moment. Her body was uncomfortable from enduring nights of exhaustion, and today, unfortunately, she happened to have her period. She soaked in the cold river water for quite some time in the morning, feeling physically and mentally exhausted. Right now, all she wanted was a little peace and quiet, to find a place to lie down, sleep, and not talk about anything.
Seeing the scrutiny in the man's eyes, Jessica said, "Let me rest first. I'll talk when I feel better. Can I go back to my room and sleep?"
There was almost a hint of pleading in her tone, which was a natural reaction when someone was exhausted and on the verge of breaking down.
After saying that, she didn't care about anything else and turned around to walk towards the door of the children's room while also adding, "Please go downstairs and pick up Danielle right after half-past four. The school bus will drop her off at the residential compound entrance."
With that, Jessica walked into the children's room without looking back.
Gabriel turned his gaze to the cellphone on the coffee table, which had been immersed in water several hours ago and still had cracks on the screen.
At around eight o'clock in the evening, Jessica woke up and opened her eyes. Despite sleeping for a few hours, her sleep was restless. Even a slight movement reminded her of the pain in her neck, which reminded her of what had happened that day. It felt as though she had only had a brief nap during these few hours, and her mental and physical state had not received proper rest.
However, while she was in a state of half-sleep, half-wakefulness, she heard Danielle's voice, which assured her that Danielle had been brought back. This made her feel more at ease, so she closed her eyes and slept.
Unable to fall asleep at this moment, she slowly sat up and sluggishly walked out of the children's room.
She opened the door and saw Danielle obediently drawing on the coffee table. Danielle was only a little over four years old and was in the little kid class at kindergarten. The teacher did not teach writing, but there were some art classes as an introduction to painting, which Danielle particularly enjoyed.
Jessica couldn't tell what Danielle was drawing as she approached, but she seemed especially focused. Danielle looked up and saw that Mommy was awake, then noticed something on Mommy's neck. She remembered that Uncle Spencer had said Mommy was not feeling well and should not be disturbed, so Danielle quickly grinned and said, "Mommy, are you feeling unwell here?"
Danielle said this while curiously raising her finger and pointing at the cervical collar on Jessica's neck.
Jessica softly replied, "Yes," and gently touched Danielle's little head. At the same time, she faintly heard some commotion coming from the kitchen. She turned around and sluggishly walked towards the kitchen.
In the spotless kitchen, a handsome tall man stood before the stove, skillfully frying a steak. Despite being in such a down-to-earth place as the kitchen, the silver spatula in his hand was a kitchen utensil that Jessica often used; yet, it inexplicably gave off a sense of nobility.
Smelling the aroma from afar, she knew it must taste delicious.
If he really was the CEO of Harriman Group who had gone missing after falling off a cliff, called Harriman or something like that, it would be impossible for him to be frying steaks like this. Jessica suddenly called out, "Spencer."
Gabriel glanced at her casually, then withdrew his gaze and flipped the steak in front of him.
Jessica stood in front of the kitchen door for a while. Seeing that he didn't seem to have any intention of acknowledging her, she realized that she was being quite boring. He was kind enough to help her daughter with dinner, yet she was here overthinking things and even wanted to test his sensitivity to this name by calling him.
But it seemed that Spencer was not a name that could be fake. When he looked at her just now, his instinctive reaction to his name seemed genuine, without any deliberate intention.
Then it was strange.
Jessica couldn't understand and awkwardly touched the huge thing on her neck before walking back to Danielle to see her drawing.
Gabriel stood in the kitchen, slowly furrowing his brow.
Many years ago, while studying abroad, he didn't accept the people the Harriman family sent to take care of him. Occasionally, when he had free time, he would cook in his apartment overseas.
Time flew by, and many years had passed. When he returned to the country to take over the company, he often flew to different countries and cities, with numerous projects piling up. There were frequent meetings and a packed schedule with the CEO personally inspecting. He no longer had such leisure.
In the past few years after returning back to the country, he had never personally cooked. Surprisingly, this was his first time doing so, to feed a four-year-old girl.
There was the sound of Jessica and Danielle arguing outside.
"Danielle, what on earth did you draw?"
"I drew you!"
Jessica was shocked, "This creature with feet growing on its head and a bunch of messy flowers as a body is supposed to be me? How does this look like me?"
"These aren't feet, Mommy. It's hair!"
"You see, whose hair only grows two strands? And they're sticking up like that? Do you want to curse your mommy into a bald head?"
"Okay, I got it. Then I'll draw a few more!" Danielle cooperatively added a few more strands of hair for Mommy and embellished it with pink watercolor beneath.
Jessica's mouth twitched as she said, "What is this supposed to be again?"
"These are the hairpins I added to Mommy's hair!"
"It looks like pimples on a fierce grandma's scalp." Jessica commented tastelessly.
Danielle pouted at her tasteless Mommy and covered the drawing, refusing to show it to her anymore. But Jessica insisted on looking at it. Danielle quickly picked up her drawing and ran to the kitchen, holding it up to Gabriel, "Uncle, look at the picture I drew of Mommy! Isn't she beautiful?"
