Chapter 501 Still Not Awake
Aaron calmly moved the coat from one arm to the other, his face showing no sign of emotion. "It seems you have more connections in Washington than I thought."
Jessica looked up sincerely. "Uncle Aaron, if you need, I can introduce some friends to you."
It seemed like she genuinely wanted to help him and her words were genuinely soft without a hint of warning or threat.
Aaron walked past her indifferently.
"Uncle Aaron." Jessica had never called any other relative in the Jenner family so affectionately.
Yet every time Aaron heard her call him that, he felt a strange chill on his scalp. He turned back.
Jessica walked with him to the exit of the corridor leading to Donald's residence. The cold wind blew in, and she shrank her shoulders, crossed her arms, and pulled her sweater tighter without a coat. She turned to look at him, a slight smile in her eyes, looking harmless. "Do you know my mom?"
The smile in Jessica's eyes wasn't strong, but her years of acting made it easy for her to create an atmosphere of innocence and relaxation.
"No." Aaron said coldly, actively changing the subject. "I heard your husband is also in Washington? Why haven't I seen him?"
Jessica seemed not to notice his probing question and immediately withdrew her smile, looking sad. "He had an accident and hasn't woken up in the hospital."
"Oh? What happened?"
"A few days ago, we were dining at Golden Fortune Restaurant when it suddenly caught fire. Although we barely escaped, he protected me the whole time, inhaling too much smoke and getting seriously injured. He's been in the ICU without signs of waking up." Jessica said, turning her eyes to the door, looking lost and sad.
Aaron was about to speak when Jessica's voice floated over. "The owner of Golden Fortune Restaurant seems to be quite familiar with the Jenner family. He resigned from the Manhattan Construction finance department over a decade ago and went into business. Now he's a notable figure in Washington's business circle. Do you know him?"
Aaron stared at her for a moment, then suddenly smiled faintly. "I know him, but not well."
"I see. It's too cold; I'll go back to my room to get a coat. Uncle Aaron, are you staying at the Jenner family for a while? We can talk later." Jessica said lightly, then smiled and walked out.
She didn't look back, but she could feel the cold gaze behind her, watching her until she stepped on the snow and turned onto another path leading to her villa. Only then did the gaze stop following her.
That afternoon, Jessica found that Rebecca had been missing all day. Without looking for her, Jessica went straight to the hospital.
The Jenner Mansion.
Although Aaron rarely came back, he was always one of the masters of the Jenner family, unlike Jessica, who seemed like a guest in the first few days after her return. Recently, everyone realized that she was indeed the young lady of the Jenner family.
After visiting Donald, Aaron first went to the main hall for a cup of coffee, casually asked a few questions about the household matters, and then called the two doctors at home to inquire about Donald's health in detail.
After handling all necessary matters, Aaron went directly to Rebecca's mother's room in the early afternoon.
Rebecca's mother, Natalie Jenner, had a heart attack years ago and had a stent placed. She had been recuperating at home for years and rarely went out. She also had diabetes, so she was very careful about her diet and had become much more haggard in recent years.
When Aaron entered, he saw Natalie eating, with a bottle of medication beside her that needed to be taken before meals. Rebecca was also there, eating with Natalie.
Because of Natalie's dietary restrictions, she rarely dined in the main hall with other Jenner family members. They ate simple meals, mostly leftover vegetables and potatoes from the kitchen. There was also a small electric pot in the large room, cooking pasta.
Aaron, aware of their living conditions and treatment over the years, glanced around before walking in. "Just started the meal?"
Natalie turned her head at the sound, her eyes indifferent. "Yes."
Rebecca also turned to look at him and quickly stood up. "Uncle Aaron."
Aaron waved his hand. "Go ahead and eat. I just got back and came to see you."
"I'm already done." Rebecca stood without sitting back down.
Aaron nodded. "Alright, Rebecca, you go out for a walk first. I have something to discuss with your mom."
"Okay." Rebecca quickly cleaned up her dishes, grabbed her coat, and ran out. She hesitated at the door, looked back to see Natalie still slowly eating the remaining food, and Aaron standing beside her, lost in thought. Rebecca turned and ran out.
She first stayed in Jessica's villa for a while, waiting for almost an hour without seeing Aaron come out of the attic. Then she went back.
As soon as she entered, she heard Aaron's low, nearly icy voice. "You should know Rebecca is only seventeen. In Washington, if she continues to be left unattended, her life will be ruined. If you agree with my request, you and Rebecca will have no worries in all aspects. I've already arranged for her to transfer to a prestigious high school, which is also a private school. This will benefit her future social and professional circles. You should understand, these all depend on me. Our two brothers have indeed neglected you and your daughter over the years. You shouldn't stand for either of us, but since you have no intention towards Eugene, why not consider my proposal?"
Natalie's voice was neither high nor low. "You and Eugene have indeed inherited our father's cold-bloodedness. You have no familial ties with me, only focusing on business, career, and social circles. But in the end, before dad passed away, you remembered me."
Aaron said calmly, "Has Eugene contacted you?"
"No, but his man Samuel, has accidentally met me at home a few times. I don't know what he is thinking, but he's been polite and courteous. If it were in the past, he wouldn't have been so polite. I guess Eugene has reminded him."
