Chapter 73 Mr. Harriman's Phone Call
Danielle was taking advantage of Jessica's current difficulty in movement, and she couldn't catch up with her.
Jessica hadn't even reached the kitchen yet, nor heard what Danielle had said to Spencer inside. Finally, she reached the kitchen door, but Danielle had already happily bounced out, holding her masterpiece in her arms.
As soon as Danielle met her tasteless Mommy's eyes, she quickly hid the drawing in her embrace and ran to the side.
"What did you say to Uncle inside just now?" Jessica couldn't follow Danielle's running around the sofa due to her physical inconvenience. She could only slowly move to the side of the sofa and turn her head to look at the proud little girl.
"When the teacher was lecturing, he said that painting has a kindred spirit and resonance. Mommy, you are not my kindred spirit, Uncle Spencer is!" Danielle sat back on the small stool by the coffee table and picked up her watercolor pen, intending to continue painting. She used her other hand to shield Jessica's line of sight and stuck her tongue out at her. "Uncle Spencer just praised me!"
Jessica looked skeptical. "What did he praise you for? Did he say your drawing looks just like me?"
Danielle proudly tilted her head. "Uncle Spencer said my drawing is creative!"
Jessica replied, "Being creative enough to turn your beautiful Mommy into a completely unrecognizable monster. That's quite something."
The next day was the weekend.
Danielle knew Mommy wasn't feeling well, so after waking up, she didn't bother Jessica and went to the living room to ask Uncle Spencer to help her turn on the TV and find cartoons to watch.
Jessica also woke up from a nap, but she had a dull ache in her stomach, it was manageable, but since yesterday, the pain and fatigue during her menstrual period had become more severe. It was probably because she had soaked in the river water for a while.
She lay in bed without moving. It hadn't been more than ten hours since she took off her cervical collar, so she was even less motivated to move. However, she didn't want to ask Spencer to cook dinner and breakfast for Danielle again, and there wasn't much food at home. So, she ordered takeout for breakfast and planned to do the same for lunch when the time came.
But before noon, Danielle quietly approached Gabriel and whispered, "Uncle, I don't want to eat takeout. Let's go to the supermarket together and buy delicious food for Mommy."
There were two small supermarkets downstairs in the community not as big as large-scale supermarkets, but they had some basic ingredients.
Danielle remembered one time when Mommy made grilled pork ribs for her. She bought the spare ribs from the small supermarket downstairs, and they were delicious.
Danielle also said that she could take care of Mommy when she was sick. She could help wash the spare ribs and make sure Mommy eats well, instead of relying on takeout.
At eleven o'clock in the morning, Gabriel's cellphone rang. Landon called to report that Simon had been continuously scheming and preparing for a smooth inheritance of the Harriman family business. Landon had been observing all his secret moves.
After listening, Gabriel responded calmly, "Alright," without showing any emotions.
Gabriel's parents settled in the United Kingdom and rarely returned. Harriman's father often had disagreements and arguments with the old man. Eventually, Gabriel couldn't stand the old man's domineering and stubborn temperament, so he settled abroad and handled the overseas business of the Harriman Group in the UK. Apart from the usual official matters, he rarely contacted his family. Harriman's mother occasionally called Gabriel, but he was an extremely busy person who might even be working beyond his capacity, so he didn't have much time or energy to care about his parents, who were enjoying their days in the UK.
The old man no longer had any hope for his two sons. One had a temper even bigger than his own and settled abroad, while the other, the second son, was unsuccessful in everything and had a narrow mind with no ambition. However, he was always calculating and had many hidden schemes. He didn't think highly of him, but when Gabriel was young, he placed all the hopes of the Harriman family on him.
It was hope, but also a heavy burden, a burden not everyone could bear.
Since Gabriel returned to take over the company, he knew about Simon's actions.
The Harriman family held a prominent position, and although there weren't many members within the family, there were hidden conflicts. From the parents' disputes with Simon to Simon constantly trying to establish his own power in the capital city, there were always hidden storms beneath the calm surface.
After Gabriel took over Harriman Group, it not only met the old man's expectations but also became a leader in the business world. It steadily secured its position and ventured into cooperative projects in commercial and political fields. With financial and influential power in the mainstream business battlefield, its foundation was solid, and no one could easily shake it.
It could be said that as long as Simon didn't intentionally cause trouble, as long as Gabriel was there, he was a part of the Harriman family. This was enough for him to thrive in the business and venture capital world in the capital city, with broad and unrestricted paths before him.
However, Simon's mindset has never been stable.
He could not sleep well if he could not sit in the Harriman Group CEO chair for a day.
In fact, Gabriel had no interest in Simon's plans over the years. Simon, who had never reached a high position, didn't know the weight of the responsibilities that came with the Harriman Group and family. He seemed unaware of the hidden dangers behind Harriman's prestigious surname. Standing at the top among the five prominent families in the country, there were lurking dangers. Every step needed to be cautiously taken, without being careless, and preventive measures had to be implemented.
Lewis Group, who used to be on par with the Harriman Group, has been repeatedly targeted and provoked by them. Now they can only submit to the Xyleria Harriman family, and Simon's actions can't even be considered feeble resistance.
Landon knew Mr. Harriman had his reasons for not taking action yet, so he hesitated. But recently, he noticed that Simon was getting into a lot of trouble, and he felt uncomfortable about it.
However, Gabriel seemed more interested in the spare ribs that Danielle had just brought back from the store, rather than listening to Landon's description of Simon's pointless struggles.
"Uncle, Mommy woke up! The doctor made her wear that thing around her neck. It took her a while to put it on, and I just helped her a little!" Danielle ran over from outside the kitchen. "But Mommy was clumsy today. She was so adorable!"
On the other end of the phone, Landon wondered how he could hear what sounded like a child's voice in Mr. Harriman's call. It must have been a hallucination.
There was no way Mr. Harriman would...
Gabriel hung up the phone, then rushed into the kitchen and gently patted the little one who was hugging his legs. He motioned for her to watch cartoons. After Danielle obediently left, he rolled up his sleeves and started dealing with the loving spare ribs that Danielle insisted on buying for Jessica.
