Chapter 674 Sweet Extra of Couple Variety Show 159

Gabriel took the basket with one hand and gently stopped the elderly man from handing back the money with the other. He said something to the old man, who immediately teared up, looking at Gabriel with hesitation but still not daring to accept the money. Gabriel, without saying another word, handed the basket to another staff member nearby and turned back towards Jessica.

Jessica approached him and asked quietly, "What did you say to the old man?"

Gabriel put his arm around Jessica and led her outside, not looking back at the elderly man who was still trying to return the money.

It wasn't until they were back on the bus that Gabriel finally said, "Nothing much, just asked a few questions about his son."

Jessica was surprised. Gabriel, who was usually so cold and indifferent, not only bought the pears for her but also took the time to chat with the old man.

"Has his son never come back?"

Gabriel replied calmly, "He did, but he died. The place where the old man sells pears every day is where his son fell from a crane and died while working."

Jessica's curiosity turned to sadness as she stared at Gabriel, speechless for a moment.

Gabriel patted her shoulder lightly. "Don't think about it. Let's get on the bus."

Jessica glanced back at the elderly man, who was being stopped by the staff from returning the money. She thought about the staff's comments and realized that if even these occasional visitors thought this way, the neighbors and relatives in the village probably did too.

The old man never explained anything, nor did he mention that his son had long passed away. He just relied on his limited ability to earn a little money for food every day and to visit his son's workplace.

Jessica stood by the bus for a while, hesitated, and then got on. She saw the producer sitting at the front, talking to the director. She leaned down and pointed outside at the old man who hadn't left yet, wanting to give him some more money.

Seeing Jessica point outside, the director and producer looked in that direction and smiled. "Mr. Harriman already mentioned it when he came up. The old man is quite stubborn and probably won't accept our help. Mr. Harriman said he even wanted to return the thousand dollars. The show will plan an episode related to charity and include the old man, using the donations from the episode to help him. That way, it's more appropriate."

Jessica nodded and didn't say anything more.

When she returned to her seat, she saw that the basket of pears had already been delivered, and many had been washed and placed in a bag. Gabriel had just sat down and picked up a green pear, raising an eyebrow at Jessica as if to ask if she could really eat it.

Without a word, Jessica sat down, took the pear from his hand, and took a big bite. What others found unbearably sour, she found incredibly refreshing and delicious. Her eyes lit up. "It's so good!"

Cindy leaned over and saw the green pear in Jessica's hand. "Oh my gosh, it looks so sour. How can you eat that?"

"I like sour things," Jessica laughed and pointed to the bag of washed pears. "Want one?"

Cindy took one look and felt her teeth ache. She quickly waved her hand. "No thanks, you enjoy it. I can't handle that sourness."

As Cindy was about to sit back, she glanced at Jessica, remembering that she had gone outside to throw up earlier and was now eating something so sour.

Noticing Cindy's curious and questioning look, the other guests also turned to see what was going on.
