Chapter 459 It Might Be the Pants He Has Treasured for over Twenty Years
As soon as Nicholas thought about how Gabriel used to beat him up when they were kids, he couldn't help but sigh a few times, unable to shake off the childhood trauma. He felt an urge to pinch Danielle's little face hard, just to get back at Gabriel.
But Danielle kept staring at him with those big, wide eyes, making it impossible for him to do it. In the end, he just poked her on the forehead, put on a disdainful look, and pulled out a delicate little box from his coat pocket.
"Here is a gift for you. Don't get too excited."
Danielle's face lit up, and she immediately chirped, "Thank you, Uncle Nicholas!" She eagerly reached out to take it.
Seeing that Danielle quietly held the gift without opening it, Nicholas raised an eyebrow. "Not gonna open it?"
Danielle hadn't had a chance to open any of the gifts she got today because Jessica had mentioned that many of the people who came were distant relatives and friends, and their gifts might not be suitable for kids. Plus, opening gifts in front of everyone was considered rude, so Danielle had obediently kept them wrapped.
But this tall, handsome, and somewhat mysterious Nicholas seemed to have a good relationship with Danielle's family.
Danielle glanced over at Jessica, her big eyes seeking approval.
Seeing Jessica nod with a smile, Danielle quickly and curiously opened the delicate box in her hand.
Inside was a pink, detachable, and assembled pencil, made up of many small circles. The largest circle at the top was a mini globe that could light up softly with a gentle touch. It also had touchable buttons decorated with tiny diamonds, giving it a subtle elegance. It wasn't something outrageously expensive, but it was perfect for Danielle's age, very thoughtful, and easily liked by kids.
"Wow!" Danielle exclaimed in surprise, looking at the pencil and the small glowing globe on it. "It's so pretty!"
"Do you like it?" Nicholas asked with a smug tilt of his head and a smile.
"I love it! Thank you, Uncle Nicholas! It's so pretty!" Danielle shook the pencil in her hand and excitedly turned to Jessica. "Mommy, can I use the pencil Uncle Nicholas gave me to do my homework?"
"Of course, you can. It's yours now."
Danielle immediately jumped up in joy, ran forward, and hugged Nicholas's leg, looking up at him with a big smile. "Thank you, Uncle Nicholas! Thank you, Uncle Nicholas! Danielle really loves the gift!"
Caught off guard by Danielle suddenly hugging his leg, Nicholas looked down at her, chuckled, and to his surprise, found himself, someone who usually disliked kids, making a child so happy. He flicked her little head lightly and said with a frown, "If you like it, Uncle Nicholas will give you a new little gadget every year."
Danielle nodded repeatedly, feeling a bit embarrassed by the many gifts she received today, and simply hugged his leg, then quietly turned her eyes to look at the others in the main hall who were watching them.
Despite Danielle's seemingly silly and clingy demeanor, Michael and Seraphina knew she was actually very clever.
Without any instructions, she could easily tell who was sincere and who did not genuinely care for her.
Earlier, a bunch of people in the main hall were gushing over how cute and pretty Danielle was, saying she looked just like her parents and would grow up to be a beauty. Danielle just smiled sweetly and thanked them. But now, she was hugging Nicholas's leg, clearly knowing he was someone she could count on.
Nicholas's eyes landed on Jessica's wrist. Noticing the bracelet, he turned to Gabriel and asked, "Are they back?"
Gabriel gave him a calm look, and Nicholas instantly got it, his expression unchanged. Without saying a word, he suddenly bent down, picked up Danielle, and let her sit on his shoulders. Carrying the startled Danielle, he turned around. "Let's go, sweetheart. Uncle Nicholas is taking you to the Harriman family's backyard to hunt for treasure. I buried some when I was a kid behind the rockery. Wanna find it?"
"Wow! Is there really treasure?" Danielle held onto Nicholas's neck, looking around excitedly from her new, taller vantage point.
Nicholas carried Danielle away. Michael and Seraphina were still arguing and didn't expect Nicholas to swoop in and win Danielle's heart, just taking her away like that.
The two old folks pouted, glanced at each other, then rolled their eyes and turned away.
Jessica leaned close to the tall and upright Gabriel and whispered, "Is there really treasure?"
Gabriel's voice was calm and indifferent. "I guess, it's the marbles and toy guns he hid. He often wet his pants as a kid and was very proud, so the wet pants often disappeared after being hidden. The so-called treasure might be the pants he treasured for over twenty years."
After Kimberly changed clothes in her room, she called the Harriman family's makeup artist to fix her hair. Twenty minutes later, she returned to the main hall.
Benjamin and Brooklyn had also changed into their outfits, finally dressed up like everyone else.
After all, tonight's family dinner was very important to Michael. It was a rare grand family banquet, and if they didn't cooperate, they might be refused entry even if they returned to the country in the future.
After coming out, Brooklyn instinctively wanted to find Danielle. While changing clothes, she kept thinking about how cute and adorable Danielle was. The blood bond made it hard for her to feel any distance or rejection towards Danielle. But now, not seeing Danielle, she only saw Michael and Seraphina sitting in the main hall, seemingly arguing about something. The old couple didn't care about the guests around them, glaring at each other without being polite, clearly having just had a fight.
Benjamin sighed and walked over, intending to mediate, but Seraphina was the first to turn and glare at him. "Shut up, you haven't even sorted out your own family matters, don't meddle here."
Benjamin, who had lived for decades, was still humiliated by Seraphina.
Kimberly didn't care about the old couple's business. When she returned to the main hall, she scanned the crowd and spotted Jessica, always by Gabriel's side, smiling and greeting guests.
Seeing the bracelet on Jessica's wrist again, Kimberly felt a surge of anger.
'Why Jessica? Why does it have to be her? What makes Jessica worthy? She doesn't deserve it at all!'
