Chapter 330 Country W, the Jenner Family
Jessica stood a few feet away from her blood relative, someone she'd never met before, but she didn't move closer.
"Miss Jenner," the man in the suit said respectfully, "Please come over. The chairman won't harm you."
Of course, he wouldn't; she was his granddaughter, after all.
Though Donald had no clue she existed until now.
"Jessica, what's going on? Who is this?" Zoey, juggling a bunch of bags, was ready to head back to the RV. Seeing Jessica talking to someone by the car, she approached cautiously and asked.
"Go back to the car and wait for me," Jessica gave Zoey a reassuring look before turning to the man and saying, "The crew's about to leave soon. I might only have five to ten minutes."
The man nodded and politely gestured for her to get into the Lincoln.
She'd seen this car at the Harriman estate, but they rarely used it, preferring to keep a low profile. Even the youngest, Nicholas, avoided flashy rides.
In Country W, where numerous old-money families resided, luxury cars worth millions were a common sight.
Jessica didn't fully grasp the Jenner family's legacy. She only knew that Sunroy Group was their biggest business. Eugene had secured his spot among his brothers by impressing Donald, winning the inheritance. But within a few years, Donald had taken it back in a fit of anger.
Zoey, still carrying the bags, returned to the car and poked her head out to ask if Jessica needed her to come along. Jessica said no and headed towards the Lincoln.
As she reached the car, the man in the suit respectfully opened the back door. Donald, over 70, with white hair and gold-rimmed glasses, dressed in a black suit, sat upright in the leather seat. He turned to look at Jessica as she approached.
"Come in and sit," Donald said.
Jessica got into the car but didn't speak immediately, unsure how to address the elderly man before her.
"Is your name Jessica?"
Once she was inside and the door was closed, leaving only her, Donald, and the silent driver in the front, Donald asked again.
"Yes," Jessica replied, looking into Donald's eyes.
Upon noticing her audacity to meet his gaze, Donald peered at her over his glasses before speaking., "Eugene was unfilial, hiding my granddaughter for so many years while raising someone else's child. It's truly a sin."
Hearing this, Jessica understood.
Indeed, Trinity had also been asked to undergo a DNA test.
Trinity had just gone to see Gabriel, causing a scene, and suddenly Trinity's background was brought to the Jenner family in Country W.
Was it a coincidence?
What else did Gabriel not know? What else could he not do?
Jessica slightly curled her lips, but it wasn't obvious in front of Donald. She heard Donald continue, "Back then, I only knew bits and pieces about your mother. She was an executive at a small private company in Xyleria. When she fell in love with Eugene, I didn't approve and instead supported a marriage with the Gray family. But I didn't know your mother was already pregnant, nor did I expect Linda, who had been indulged by the Gray family for years, to have such a messy personal life and marry Eugene while pregnant."
People always said the rich had crazy stories, and here was one unfolding right in front of her.
Jessica just listened.
"But Jessica, please believe me, your mother's death had nothing to do with the Jenner family. I only thought she wasn't a good match for Eugene and tried to intervene. Besides affecting their relationship, the Jenner family did nothing harmful. Linda's actions are being looked into. We will provide you with a proper explanation promptly.."
"Thank you." Jessica looked into Donald's eyes again, sincerely thanking him, but clearly more distant.
Donald looked at her for a while. Despite being a shrewd businessman in Country W's business world for many years, this cunningness was ingrained in his bones at over eighty. However, faced with Jessica's guarded and icy demeanor, Donald couldn't help but display signs of fatigue.
"Have you ever wondered why I suddenly wanted to see you?" Donald asked, looking at her intently.
"Suddenly discovering another granddaughter, you must want to see what she looks like, right?" Jessica replied with a smile.
Donald seemed not to notice the hint of cold sarcasm in her words. After a moment of contemplation, he said, "You have three uncles, but one is a drug addict, and the other two lack business acumen. Eugene is my youngest son. Although he has been negligent in his personal and family life, he is talented in business. Otherwise, I wouldn't have given him the family business back then. But now, his mistake is not in his poor conduct but in hiding his own daughter to keep these external possessions, showing a lack of conscience. He is not the ideal heir for the Jenner family."
Donald continued to look at her, "I didn't contact you immediately but waited two days before coming to you. You should have guessed why. I won't beat around the bush. I can honestly tell you that I investigated your academic background domestically and internationally during these two days. You lived alone in the Country M, achieving straight A's at a prestigious university. You are a low-key, smart child who knows how to hide your talents."
Hearing this, Jessica suddenly spoke, "No, I'm very ordinary. Everyone has different ways of surviving. Completing my studies wasn't really necessary, but to avoid future regrets, I worked part-time while studying to graduate."
Donald smiled. "The entertainment industry isn't a particularly good place. You're still young. While I can still teach you some things, would you consider staying in Country W? In a few years, if you can stand on your own in Country W's business circle, you can reclaim what slipped from your father's hands."
Jessica's expression remained calm as she glanced at the time, "Sorry, Mr. Jenner, our crew is preparing to leave Country W, and everyone is waiting for me. I already told your assistant or secretary that I only have five to ten minutes."
She looked at him again. "Your proposal doesn't work for me. I haven't been around business stuff since I was a kid. I may have Jenner blood, but I didn't grow up in that world. While this is indeed a good opportunity to get rich quickly, I don't want to live such a mismatched life. I'm fine as I am now."
