Chapter 375 Mr. Harriman's Injury, I'll Leave It to You.
The nurse left, and the night outside the window at 3 a.m. was mottled, with the sound of rain gradually stopping.
The overly quiet atmosphere in the ward, coupled with the look Gabriel gave her from the hospital bed, made Jessica feel a bit at a loss.
For a moment, she didn't know whether to approach and ask about his wound or to leave.
Gabriel glanced at the clock on the wall of the ward, his voice hoarse. "It's 3 a.m., who can you go find?"
Jessica coughed and took a few seconds before speaking, "So much has happened tonight. Why haven't Wayne and the others come to the hospital yet?"
"Wayne didn't come to Stellaria City."
His hoarse voice paused, then he abrubtly changed the subject. "Get me a glass of water."
"Oh," Jessica replied.
She could play dumb earlier, but now that he directly asked for water, she couldn't really let him stay thirsty.
Jessica went out to borrow some common patient care items from the nurse. After all, at this hour, there was no one else to take care of him in the ward, and she couldn't go out to buy things, so she had to temporarily use the hospital's disposable items.
After returning to the ward, she took out a straw, put it into the cup she had filled with water, and went to the bedside to feed him.
As Gabriel drank the water, she glanced at the needle on the back of his hand.
Gabriel's complexion was naturally healthy, with a cool undertone. Due to blood loss, his skin appeared even paler than usual. The veins on the back of his hand and arm were clearly visible. The IV for anti-inflammation had just been hung up not long ago, and the medicine in the bottle was dripping down the tube, entering his pale skin.
Returning to the previous topic, she said, "It's impossible for you to come to Stellaria City on a business trip without bringing anyone. I remember your company has quite a few secretaries and assistants. Usually, there are at least two or three people accompanying you on business trips."
Seeing Gabriel drinking water through the straw without any rush, Jessica could only maintain her position holding the cup by the bedside, watching him.
After he finished drinking, he said, "I flew to Stellaria City temporarily to handle two projects. The initial trip was only supposed to be two or three days, so I didn't need many people to come along."
The light in the ward was also a glaring white. Gabriel let go of the straw and looked at her. "Due to the heavy rain, the original schedule was postponed, and I stayed in Stellaria City for a few more days."
"What about Landon? Wayne didn't come, and Landon didn't come either?" Jessica asked.
Gabriel seemed to want to sit up in bed. Jessica quickly put down the cup and pressed him down. "Don't move! The nurse just said you can't move anymore. If the wound bleeds again, it'll be troublesome! You still have a needle in your hand. If it dislodges, I'll have to call the nurse."
"I see you're in a hurry to leave. I need to see if I can get out of bed. If I can manage on my own, you're free to go anytime." He lay back on the pillow, glancing indifferently at the needle on the back of his hand.
As he spoke, Gabriel's Adam's apple moved slightly, like a layer of snow lightly covering something, gradually falling away, revealing the original color beneath.
Jessica, her less-than-kind thoughts exposed, didn't speak for a moment but kept her hand on him to prevent him from moving.
With her other hand, she quickly checked his arm to make sure the needle hadn't bulged or turned blue from his earlier movement, then she sighed in relief.
She turned back to him. The sheets were a blinding white, and the overly clean light made Gabriel's already pale face look even more haggard. But the clean, sharp lines of his face seemed etched in her eyes, overlapping with the contours she had buried in her memory for two years. The overlapping images were of Gabriel pinning her down at the Golden Orchid Hotel, looking down at her.
Gabriel said, "Landon was preparing to go on a busi..."
At that moment, the door to the ward was suddenly knocked on and then pushed open. Landon's figure quickly appeared in the doorway, his eyes meeting Gabriel's cold gaze from the bed. The worry in Landon's heart seemed to be doused with a bucket of ice water, and the words he was about to say died on his lips.
Gabriel looked at him expressionlessly and completed the last word. "Business trip."
Jessica turned to the finally arrived Landon, her eyes lighting up. "You're finally here. I'll leave this to you."
Landon had wanted to ask how Mr. Harriman was doing. Since the accident, there had been so many ambulances that it was impossible to immediately identify every injured person. He had just rushed back from the west side of Stellaria City and found out which hospital and ward Mr. Harriman was in only at midnight.
He quickly withdrew his gaze under Gabriel's expressionless look and took a step back.
Jessica was confused when she saw Landon’s decisive step back.
"Mrs. Jenner, it's great that you're here. I have something to do. Since the rain isn't too heavy, flights are operating normally. I have to go on a business trip," Landon said seriously, "Please take care of Mr. Harriman's injury."
She looked at the clock on the wall and asked, "Where are you going on a business trip this late?"
Even without looking at the bed, Landon could feel the cold gaze from that direction. Without blinking, he said, "Bangkok. The airport lifted the rain restrictions, and I just booked a flight to Bangkok tonight. It departs at dawn, so I have to go to the airport now."
"Bangkok?" Jessica looked skeptical. "Does your company have business in Bangkok?"
"It's a last-minute addition. I have to go." Before Landon finished speaking, he had already opened the door behind him and disappeared again, having spent less than two minutes in the ward.
'A business trip, just like that?' Jessica thought.
She angrily looked at the door that had just closed again, then turned sharply to Gabriel, who was lying calmly on the bed.
She glared at him for a while, wanting to speak but unable to, wanting to curse but unable to.
Even if she did curse, the only one to blame would be herself.
No one told her to be standing under the light at that moment, after all.
She simply turned around, picked up the cup on the table, and put it down heavily, making a loud noise to express her dissatisfaction. Gabriel heard it and just looked at her calmly.
Jessica quickly looked away, picked up the cup, and asked, "Do you want more?"
"Yes," Gabriel replied.
Jessica had no choice but to pour another cup of water to feed him. Gabriel continued to drink through the straw, looking as if nothing had happened, as if no one had been sent to Bangkok in the middle of the night.
She saw Gabriel's Adam's apple move slightly as he drank and looked away, saying, "Is the business world in Stellaria City always this chaotic? Lives are at stake. How could such a large chandelier suddenly fall?"
Jessica couldn't understand. Lives were at stake, yet the internal family killings were happening so blatantly before her eyes.
Gabriel let go of the straw and chuckled, but the smile didn't reach his eyes. His voice was hoarse and low. "Did you forget why I was saved by you and Danielle in the first place?"
