Chapter 509 Gabriel's Arm Had Already Wrapped Around.
Wearing the hospital ward slippers, Jessica had been hunched over for so long that she still hadn't fully straightened up.
Their eyes met. Gabriel's lowered gaze fell on her, making Jessica feel as if the night outside the window was boiling and burning.
For a moment, Jessica felt like a puppet on a stage, her brain stopping all thoughts, her limbs seemingly immobilized by the huge device around her neck.
She used all her strength to control her emotions and softly asked, "When did you get here?"
Gabriel met her gaze, his lips curving slightly due to her earlier awkwardness and the shock and forced restraint in her eyes. His deep eyes held a profound intensity under the dim lights of the ward.
Gabriel's clean scent was right in front of her, and he calmly said, "Just arrived here."
Although she had guessed that his condition might not be as serious as Landon had said, and that it might just be a smokescreen for the outside world, Jessica's heart had been in turmoil. Seeing Gabriel appear in good condition suddenly left her with mixed feelings.
Resentment, grievance, fear, and heartache were all mixed together. Finally, she raised her hand to steady the large cervical collar around her neck, then quickly reached out to support him, pushing him to sit down on the edge of the bed.
"Sit down first," Jessica muttered, her eyes red but refusing to let him see.
Gabriel hadn't expected her to have such strength in this condition. He didn't resist her force and let her push him to sit on her bed.
In fact, it had been less than half a month since the fire at the Golden Fortune Restaurant. Even if Gabriel's condition wasn't as severe as rumored, he must have gone through a few dangerous days. The exact day he woke up didn't seem as important as him standing alive in front of her now.
Even though he didn't look too bad now, his face was noticeably paler than before the incident. He still looked somewhat haggard, with a lingering wound on his forehead that Jessica could see clearly when she tilted her head earlier. Now, as he sat down, she lowered her head to part his hair and examine it closely. She also noticed the white bandages peeking out from under his black sweater collar, likely from the injuries sustained when he jumped with her through the glass window. He certainly hadn't fully recovered.
Jessica took a deep breath, suddenly straightened up, and took a step back, her face expressionless as she commanded, "Stand up."
Gabriel was puzzled.
Jessica took another step back and repeated, "Stand up."
Gabriel stood up as instructed. He was too tall, so Jessica had to take two more steps back to avoid looking up.
She then said, "Sit down."
He sat down.
"Stand up again."
Gabriel stood up again.
Jessica suddenly pointed to the farthest corner of the room where the TV was and said, "Walk over there and then come back."
Fortunately, Landon hadn't entered the room. If he had seen this scene, he would have suspected either they had lost their minds. Gabriel obediently walked to the TV and then back as she instructed.
Jessica looked at him. Although Gabriel was more haggad than before the fire, he was still the tall, handsome, and elegant.
He looked much more real than when he was lying in the ICU, eyes closed and unresponsive.
Gabriel slowly raised an eyebrow. "Satisfied?"
"You can move, so it seems you are not crippled," Jessica nodded in assessment. "Alright, sit down. Don't tire yourself out."
Gabriel's face showed a complex expression. This time, he didn't sit down but walked towards her. "When did you figure it out?"
"The day Rebecca said Aaron specifically asked her about your injuries. If she were lying, it would be easily discovered since she was young. She told everything she knew and saw, and I felt something was a bit off at that time."
Gabriel had already walked up to her, but because of the cervical collar, he couldn't get any closer. He looked down at her. "I thought it was because you knew me too well. Whether I was unconscious or just sleeping, you could tell at a glance."
Jessica's temples throbbed instantly. He still dared to mention this?
Thinking of the scene of him lying in the ICU, the emotions she had been holding back for so long finally surfaced, and her nose started to tingle. "I couldn't enter that ward. Through the glass window, I could only see your silhouette among a bunch of machines. How could I tell if you were really unconscious or just pretending? Besides, with the thick smoke and the height from the third floor, not only did everyone else believe you wouldn't make it, but even I almost thought I was going to lose..."
Before she could finish, Gabriel's hand had already wrapped around. He clearly intended to pull her into his arms for comfort. But then he frowned, looked at the cervical collar around her neck, and complained, "It's in the way."
Jessica, who was on the verge of tears, was choked by his sudden comment. She looked up at him in disbelief, as if he was saying that she was in the way.
Gabriel took her hand and held it in his palm. "Given the circumstances, Aaron has always been cautious because of me. To catch him off guard, I had to give him an opening."
